I can't think of a single group I'm in or have been in which prohibits socialization threads, and some of mine are pretty strict.

I don't that was the reason Goodreads was created for, that is what Facebook is thee for.

Something like what?
Having a thread with no point other than soci..."
Know others? I don't see many new people have joined in on the conversation.

How art thou a Facebook user? But alas, thee hast quit and defaced thine Facebook account.
Uh, dude, if Goodreads didn't allow socialization, it would just be a downloadable program with lists and tick boxes.
And if you somehow expected a forum on the Internet to not have some level of socialization, then you're doing the Internet all kinds of wrong.

Hey, we got

It is, but not for off topic randomless. Mainly to discuss books and related topics of all kinds. It is after all called Goodreads for a reason.

Hey, I bet they are at least on topic.

Hey, I bet they are at least on topic."
Especially if the topic is socializing.

Kevin, if you dislike socialization, stay out of the Member's Chat folder. Problem solved.

Ok, Kevvie is about to get me fired today!!!!
ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!
Kevvie, you do know that GR is a social networking site, right? And that the GR staff is actively trying to make GR more like Facebook, right? And that the whole goal of GR is to be the Facebook for people who prefer books...
...which includes socializing.

Ok, Kevvie is about to get me fired..."
See, as you said it yourself, "for people who prefer books".

Ok, Kevvie is a..."
Yep. And I prefer books.
And now my book preferring ass is socializing. Don't like it? Stay off the internet.
Or you can pull that red-hot poker out of your ass so that you can relax a bit. It looks a little uncomfortable.

Was woken by the hotel manager angrily banging at my door somewhere in Germany, demanding to know where the hell was the hotels elaborate lobby christmas decorations, only to find a 6 six foot Hans and Gretel gingerbread house and attendant Dove of peace in my room along with half my work colleagues scattered around the room including the bathtub. Had to rapidly throw everyone out as we had to report for duty in two hours.
Expeditious deployment of a credit card was required to get out of that one. Oh the good old days.
Ok back to lurking for me.

Ok,..."
If what you are saying is true, why does it all this random stuff not happen more often with different people in other groups?

Kevvie, I don't belong to even 1/2 of the groups you belong to - I only join groups I'm actually interested in. So I can't say why what goes on in other groups.
I can say that this happens in EVERY other group I've even seen or belonged to. Because we all become friends with each other. Because we like each other.
It's the internet Kevvie, you can calm down now.
Or better yet.....
Run!

Expeditious deployment of a credit card was required to get out of that one. Oh the good old days."
Awesomesauce!
You are never allowed to hang out with Grant....lol!

It doesn't happen in all groups because not all groups have the same social dynamic.

Ya know, I'm only in a handful of groups - like 7 or something - but at least half of them, if not more, have at least one thread for general chit-chat and randomness. This isn't a phenomenon confined to this group.
ETA: If it's only for discussing books, then it's also not a place to play word association games or music games or things like that, either, yet you don't seem to have a problem with those...

The real answer might be all other groups don't have you and your friends.

Yeah, they might, but it does not get this blown out. Plus its never as random as this or well it ever be.

As others have said - if you don't like it, you don't have to read it.
You have issues with randomness, Kev?

Oh crap Denae's been Fantasy Czar for about 5 minutes and she's already talking in manager speak.
@MrsJoseph, I think I would've been out of a job a long time ago if I hung out with Grant.
Colleen, if those are your drawings, they're just awesome.

As others have said - if you don't like it, you don'..."
Man, you don't have to go and resort to cursing.

This seems to be the heart of the argument (and all arguments, for that matter).
It's not the random convo chat atmosphere that has him riled up, but the fact that certain Mean Girls (and associated mascot-types) are involved.

This seems to be the heart of the argument (and all arguments, for that matter).
It's not the rando..."
No, that is only a small part of the reason. If it was not for the mean girls, it would never have turn into some truly RANDOM.

Well, yes, the members of a group do contribute to a social dynamic. I have friends in a variety of groups. All of my groups have social threads and some degree of tangents. You are the only person I have ever heard repeatedly complain about the existence of those. Most people introduce the topic about which they wish to talk. Granted, you are unique in your belief that entire conversations between other people are an affront to you. They aren't.
tl;dr It isn't about you, Kevin

Or the real answer might be that the rest of the groups have this - and you are the douche that likes to bitch all the time.
Because you're jealous.
Maybe we should start bitching like you all the time.
Let's talk books.
Kevvie, why the HELL did you rate The Name of the Wind three different times?? Are you going to seriously tell me that you didn't deliberately try to lower the book's rating??
And don't lie like the last time I asked you.

Let's get back on topic, please.
And the topic is.....
Random chatter.
As you were....

Oh crap Denae's been Fantasy Czar for about 5 minutes and she's already talking in manager s..."
Err, sorry about that. 8 years in the human resources field leads to all manner of terrible speech patterns. :/

I saw a thread in Feedback just a little bit ago about a Troll being culled for deliberate lowering of book ratings.
I have Jabbas toe nail in my pocket

No, I'm not jealous. I'm just fed up with all this.

Fed up with what, Kevvie? Us not giving a damn what you think? Sorry about it. It's life. You'll live.

I saw a thread in Feedback just a little bit ago about a Troll being culled for deliberate lowering of book ratings."
Don't you even think about culling our Kevin. He's a little ray of random sunshine in my online life.
Only the incredible amazing King of random would complain about randomness in a built for purpose random thread. He is my Lord and Master and I bow down to his awesomeness.

Fed up with what, Kevvie? Us not giving a damn what you think? Sorry about it. It's life. You'll live."
No, not what your all not caring what I think, but all the pointless things being posted. I feel like there is a place and time for this, but not in this group. This is not the main objective of this group, just look at the group name, its the SciFi and Fantasy Book Club for a reason, not all your all's place for random whatever.

Something like what?
Having a thread with no point other than socializing?
That's somehow wrong? Attempting to get to know other members is against the rules somehow?
This is the Internet, bud. It really isn't serious business.
