Dahlia, I loved this post and can so relate! I tried writing by the seat of my pants and the characters were just two dimensional. I got a hold of a character chart and wrote about their life history as a kid, teenager, etc. and the characters just took on a life of their own. I TOTALLY agree with the astrology thing. I don't believe in it, but you can't knock the fact that reading the detailed list can help you define the character likes/dislikes. It takes a few days, but it's worth it in the end! I have 20 page write ups on my main characters! Yahoo astrology site is one of the best ways to find one of these charts.
