Shauna Castle | 105 comments I'm the first one to admit that I love nothing more than to walk into a bookstore and walk out with a bag full of new books. But, sadly, I do not have unlimited funds to support this. I try to keep a running tab of how much I spend on books per month, that way I know when its safe to splurge. I was wondering what everyone else did? How often do you let yourself go crazy buying books and do you try to keep an amount in your head or prefer not to think about it?

Phelan Archuleta (phe_the_chiclosa) | 1 comments I truly have no budget. I will try and say,"Oh you can only buy 3 books per month" but when I see a book that interests me, any ideas of a budget go out the window.

message 3: by Chris (new)

Chris Unfortunately, I just go on splurges every so often, and while I try to limit myself as I'm doing it, there is no consistent set limit or budget. However, as of today I'm on a book buying ban for the rest of the year (except books I buy as gifts for other people). When I am allowed to buy books again, a consistent budget would be a very good idea

Stefani Robinson (steffiebaby140) I don't really keep myself to a budget necessarily but it all tends to even out anyway. I know that some months I just won't be in the mood to buy anything or won't find much that's interesting and so I'll hardly spend anything. Then there's months like this one where I'm buying 15 or 20 books. So overall it evens out.

Joy I live overseas, cuz my hubby is in the military and so I have to order most my books from Amazon. I have a bad "clicky finger", and I just got a Kindle, and that "Click, click, click" you hear? Yeah that's me adding all those "freebies"...not that I'll ever really get to them...ok, maybe ONE day. but I must confess, I add them, just cuz I CAN! =/...Yeah I need help!
But back to the question...I told myself that I would buy one book for every ten I read this year...yeah right. I usually buy about two a month on average, probably a little more. It just depends on my mood, and how good a haul I got the last time I splurged.

Janet (justjanet) | 25 comments Although I have more books than I will ever read, I still acquire books constantly...they seem to follow me home. I try to limit the damage by using book trading sites, used bookstores, and the public library but if I get it in my mind that I want a book, I WILL HAVE THAT BOOK...lol.

I do have a book buying budget that I keep track of on a spreadsheet since I have many authors, titles, and series that I want to be sure to buy. This way I can plan ahead and see when their books are going to be coming out and make sure that I have the money to get them. Also, any gift money or spare change I get I often throw into my book fund. Fortunately, it usually works out that planning this way I always have the money I need for planned purchases as well as for spur of the moment and just came across buys. And anything left over I can then use for food or clothing if I must. ;-)

Chris | 12 comments I don't have a budget, but I need one. I bought two series this week...yikes!

Kathryn (26kathryn) | 42 comments I don't really have a set budget, but I tend to go into a shop thinking I can only spend up to £10 in here, don't always stick to that though!

message 10: by Shauna (new)

Shauna Castle | 105 comments One of my biggest things is that I have a hard time buying hardcover, as opposed to waiting for paperback. Harry Potter is a great example, I have the first four in paperback but then I fell so in love with the series that I shelled out the 19.99 for the hardcover new release.

I do that too. I have both the paperback and the hardcover versions of several books.

LOL I guess it's Free Kindle Ebook fever. I'm up to over 100 free downloads. Finally, this week I seem to be more selective with what I download for free.

Good way to sublimate the buying urge tho!

message 13: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly I try and stick to a budget. Sometimes I'll only buy one or 2 books a month and others like this month I'll buy 30+. It's hard to stick to a budget but I try not to go over $60.00

Vikki (silverstarz) | 65 comments I've tried saying I shouldn't buy so many... it never works

message 15: by Batsap (new)

Batsap | 117 comments Joseph, putting gift money and spare change into a book fund is the best idea ever! Why didn't I think of that before? That way I wouldn't feel like I was spending money that could be better used elsewhere on those books I have to have... =]

I don't budget myself on books, but I do try to keep it under a certain amount.

message 20: by Michele (new)

Michele (snowbuddie) | 7 comments HaHa, no...I probably should though. I am not a patient person so when I want to read a book I just go out and get it as I just cannot wait.

message 21: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra (cassandraprettyinpink) You know, I've actually tried the being on a book budget thing...but when my budget was repeatedly shot 3 days in, I decided that instead of feeling guilty about it, I would just get rid of the budget. And Poof! No more guilt.
;D

message 25: by Beth (new)

Beth (vanburren) | 69 comments No budget here. . .if I have a couple bucks, I'll go buy some books. I never pay full price for any, so I don't really feel guilty. I'll pay half price at a paperback trading place, or $.70 at Goodwill, or $.50 for the ones donated at my local grocery store; employees bring in their books to sell and give the money to charities.

(Hi, Michele!!! ~~little wave~~)

Me too, Beth! That is exactly what I do as well except I will buy a book at full price if I can't find it elsewhere because I'm just that impatient...LOL

message 27: by Louise (new)

Louise | 280 comments I sort of keep in mind whether it's a month with many expenses (like October was with furnace repairs, new washing machine etc) or not. My book buying is a combintation of new full price books, used books bought through Amazon or books from thriftshops, flea markets and second hand book shops.

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

I kinda have a budget. I like sales and discounts maybe a little too much. I had 9 books I havent read on my back shelf, 1 new reads I just received in the mail, that between rereads should have done me for the year but the friends of Library had their annual sale so I went and bought 10 more books. Never can have too much :)

message 30: by Tajma (new)

Tajma I've never been on a book budget in my life. I never saw anything unusual about it (I've been buying books since I was 7) until I recently married. My husband says he's never encountered anything like it. I routinely spend at least $50 a month on books and often twice as much. This week I told myself no more books for the rest of the year. Ha! I ordered two yesterday. It's no use, I'm afraid....

message 31: by Arlena (new)

Arlena (goodreadscomarlenadean) | 1 comments I try very hard to buy every other month but it doesn't always happen that way for me. I simply love getting my books... and now with my Kindle and simply can't stop. (smile)

message 32: by Aoibhínn (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I've tried a few times before to keep to a budget but so far I've been too weak willed to stick to one. As soon as I see the word 'sale' in a bookshop window all my willpower goes down the gutter.

message 33: by Paulfozz (new)

Paulfozz I don't plan a budget but if I've spent a lot on books or anything else I try to have a bit of restraint for a while. I always know when I've gone a bit mad and overspent, though I don't really have an expensive lifestyle generally (far from it!) so there aren't any big restrictions on what I can spend on stuff like this.

I imagine if you bought books on an e-reader it would be very difficult to get a handle on your spending as you don't see the physical sprawl of the collection building up and friends and family wouldn't either... cunning psychology really on the part of the booksellers to get people to spend more, especially when it's one click and you've bought it!

I just borrowed a friend's Kindle in preparation for a trip and I was surprised that she had bought so few books for it. If it was mine, I think I'd have it maxed out. Instead I have stacks of books everywhere that get me that "look" from non-bibliophiles.

message 35: by Valerie (new)

Valerie | 3 comments I don't have a monthly budget for buying books, but have recently found a place to get books at a really good price, which makes it hard to not spend.

message 37: by Ashley (new)

message 42: by Lianne (new)

Lianne (eclecticreading) lol, good question. I suppose I should have budget when it comes to books (the only thing I do spend on outside the necessities are books). I think I've been good in recent months in limiting the number of new books I buy but I did break that a bit in recent weeks and bought how many books in one go xD Got to slowly go back and stick to a cap limit or something.
