Steph (angel4492) | 32742 comments Do you think authors should have to have an original title for their book(s)? Meaning - no duplicates, ever?

Do you think it bothers an author when another author uses the same title as they did?

Just curious, what do ya'll think? I don't really care either way as a book buyer, but as an author I might be a little bummed. Although it could get confusing, I guess, if trying to determine which one someone was referring to.

Judithe | 6566 comments It bothers me a little bit...though can be fun to find for a challenge, LOL.

I think if I put all that work and heart into creating a novel, then someone else grabbed the same title, I'd be bummed big time. I think it would bother me less if the "other" book was a similar quality...but if it were just a piece of cr*p, I'd probably be wanting to throw a fit.

t'irla ~The Bookslayer~ aka Barbara (tirla) as a reader it didn't bother me until I joined GR :)..now I get annoyed when I have to scroll through all the same named books to find the one I want to add to my library or tbr list....

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments It can be confusing but it doesn't bother me too much because there are only so many words in every language and there are millions of books. Title length would become a problem very fast if they could only be used once. The choice of title is influenced by marketing/branding and the genre of the book which will limit the type of words available so it's inevitable for duplicates to appear.

Some examples:
Blood Bound (Mercedes Thompson, #2) by Patricia Briggs Blood Bound (Unbound, #1) by Rachel Vincent / Playing With Fire (Silver Dragons, #1) by Katie MacAlister Playing with Fire (Tales of an Extraordinary Girl, #1) by Gena Showalter / On the Prowl (includes Alpha & Omega #0.5 World of the Lupi #3.5 Monère #4 Dorina Basarab #1.1) by Patricia Briggs On the Prowl (Tales of an Urban Werewolf, #2) by Karen MacInerney

message 6: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments Oh...let's start a list...the one I keep running across lately is
The Darkest Kiss (Riley Jenson Guardian, #6) by Keri Arthur The Darkest Kiss (Lords of the Underworld, #2) by Gena Showalter

message 7: by Lis (new)

Dark Magic (Carpathians, #4) by Christine Feehan Dark Magic (Magic #5) by Cheyenne McCray

message 8: by Josie (new)

Josie | 1967 comments Lol this is a really opposite one but whenever someone comments on 'Heart of Darkness', I always get really confused, thinking they're talking about Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad instead of Heart of Darkness (Lords of the Underworld, #4.5) by Gena Showalter which surprise! usually makes what they're saying actually make sense ;)

Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma Forbidden (The Demon Trappers, #2) by Jana Oliver

Stolen (Women of the Otherworld, #2) by Kelley Armstrong Stolen by Lucy Christopher

Personal Demons (Personal Demons, #1) by Lisa Desrochers Personal Demons (Megan Chase, #1) by Stacia Kane

Spell Bound (Women of the Otherworld, #12) by Kelley Armstrong Spell Bound (Hex Hall, #3) by Rachel Hawkins

Steph (angel4492) | 32742 comments Ames, that's very true and an aspect of it I hadn't thought of (language diff).

I'll flip through my lists and see if I can add to those y'all have found. I know I've run into a lot of them, just have to remember which they were.

message 10: by Dana (new)

Dana (erato) | 922 comments I don't mind the duplicate title issue at all. I would rather have a book communicate it's intent well through the title than have something else forced instead.

You also can come across a lot of good things to read just through all the duplicates coming up when you are searching for a title. :)

Steph (angel4492) | 32742 comments Very good point, Dana. :) I like that.

Midu Hadi | 1732 comments Wow, Steph!

message 14: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32742 comments LOL! See, that's why I asked. I have swarms of dupes. More than I realized, actually. It all started b/c I got an email about the upcoming anthology The Bite Before Christmas (Argeneau, #15.5; Night Huntress, #8.5) by Lynsay Sands and I just knew I'd seen that before The Bite Before Christmas by Heidi Betts The Bite Before Christmas by Laura Baumbach .

message 15: by Midu (new)

Midu Hadi | 1732 comments Woah! 3 books with the same one? And I think the books with one word titles like Awakening, Betrayed and Resurrection etc.. there'd be even more of these.

message 16: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32742 comments I have five with the title "Awakening" and three with "Betrayal". Lots of common names. I'm sure there are even more out there I don't have.

message 17: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (michelle_mc) | 2158 comments Blood Magic (Blood Journals, #1) by Tessa Gratton Blood Magic (World of the Lupi, #6) by Eileen Wilks Blood Magic (Wing Slayer Hunters, #1) by Jennifer Lyon Blood Magic (Blood, #2) by Shayne Carmichael Blood Magic by Kira Stone Blood Magic (The Ballad Of Kirin Widowmaker #1) by Matthew Cook Blood Magic (Book #5 of the Haven Series) by B.V. Larson

I've noticed this one loads! If I suspect there may be more than one book with the same title I have a tendency to search "Blood Magic Jennifer" it narrows it down loads. I used to have time to search through all the pages... Now my kiddies are growing up and getting even more demanding :)

message 18: by Nairabell (new)

Nairabell | 634 comments There are loads of dupes out there - I've got several called Blue Moon.

Publishers do intervene occasionally. The third Hush, Hush book was changed from Tempest to Silence because of the new book called Tempest coming out in January. The publishing house actually asked Becca Fitzpatrick if she'd mind changing her title to give Julie Cross's debut book a chance. Not only is it sweet that she did, she's also hyping the new book by telling everyone why the change :)

message 19: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32742 comments Wow! That's a lot'a dupes, Michelle. :)

That's cool, Nairabell. Nice of them to talk to her about it and make the change for such a reason. Makes sense.
