Kathleen Garber My question is a major spoiler so I want to make sure no one who hasn't read the book goes any farther unless they want to.

Okay so my quesiton is, were you disappointed that they didn't make it to the center? Do you think they should have?

I was expecting them to make it since the title makes it sound like they did. Well I suppose technically it says journey, not that they arrived there. But I was disappointed. Anyone else?

Allison I know what you mean. I personally think that the current should have taken them all the way to the center, and then the waterspout carry them to the surface from there!

Rachel I shouldn't have read that!!!! lol I'm reading that book right now.

oh and something tells me you've seen the movie allie. It's one of my favorites!

Travis If this was a letdown, you might want to pass on 'From Earth to the moon' then.

Allison Travis! Now you're spoiling a book we haven't even read!!! :)

Travis So, you don't want me to tell you if there are actually any mice in 'Of mice and men'...?

Somdutta I find the end quite disappointing. I was expecting them to finally discover something even more interesting than the ones they had encountered in their journey. In addition to that, getting spewed along with lava from a volcano completely baffles your imagination.

iArivu Gonna buy it!

Steve Chaput I read the book about 45 years ago, so really can't recall how I felt about the ending. My memory of the book is probably distorted by watching various film and TV versions of the novel. May be time to reread it.

I thought the journey through the volcanic tube was really well done considering when this book was written, and wasn't disappointed with the ending at all.

Adam Pratt I think it would have been a little cheesy if they made it to the centre in my opinion, the experience of even making it that far I would think would be gratifying enough. I would expect that if they did make it to the centre there would be no chance of them ever making the journey back due to core temperatures/lack of resources, so I felt the ending was brilliant as it was.

Brandon I complained about this as well to all my friends because of the not going all the way to the center. I still enjoyed the journey, it did keep me entertained until the end, where the curve ball hit me hard.

Well, I think some of the expectations for the original story going further were caused by the liberties the first film took with that subject matter. In the film, of course, the crew found all kinds of oddness, where the actual story went a different way.

Mr.B The film version I'm thinking of was a Disney film, I believe, in which case the ability to copyright-protect the entire screenplay was of greater value than accurate presentation of the Verne story--hence, very little of the novel appears in the film. I recall from the film that the girl smuggles herself into the baggage and joins the party in Iceland, going to the center of the earth with her fiancee. Since the Jules Verne adventure novels are almost devoid of female characters altogether, it may be thought of as an improvement on the original. By and large, though, a film cannot do justice to a Verne novel, because of the difficulty incorporating all the scientific information into the story narrative. Not making it to the exact center of the earth was a moot point in the novel, since it would have been a physical impossibility. The ejection by volcanic eruption is a greater concern, since it is certainly an impossibility that they could have been pushed on a wooden raft for several hours by volcanic magma without being completely turned to ash. But artistic license can cover a multitude of solipsism. It's still a great adventure novel.

Jessie were you disappointed that they didn't make it to the center? Do you think they should have?

No and Nope

Ben Good book

Ferenc I was not disappointed that they didn't make it to the centre of the Earth, but throughout the whole book I was wondering, how did Arne Saknussemm made it. I mean, how did he have the proper tools, what was his motive? There are so many questions left unanswered about Arne Saknussem and it leaves me very curious indeed.

message 18: by Mike (new) - rated it 4 stars

Mike Franklin I believe the more accurate translation of the title is Journey to the Interior of the Earth. And with that title you might have been less mislead.

message 19: by Eric (new) - rated it 3 stars

Eric Leblanc Not really Mike, in French it is "au centre" which is meaning "middle", "center", etc.

One funny thing is that in this book they find an underground sea... well lo and behold what scientist found recently:

I had a thought for that book when I read this article :)

Hellread I would say the book really is about the journey and not the destination. I was slightly disappointed, but I didn't feel cheated in any way. It felt more real. One can't seriously expect a few low-tech guys to travel all the way to the Earth's center and back according to some vague message. Either they all die, or barely make out realizing how unreal their expedition was.

Tamara Yes, I agree with Hellread,it it about the journey inside the Earth, not really the middle. I cannot imagine the time to go to the real center.

message 22: by Eric (new) - rated it 3 stars

Eric Leblanc I don't know, again I think the title means that the point of the trip was to try to reach the Centre of the Earth, obviously this was not to happen but low tech guys from the beginning of the 1900s would maybe think it possible.
