Really, LG? That was one of the reasons I wasn't crazy about him playing Edward. That and he didn't LOOK like Edward was meant to. I think SM just got stars in her eyes getting a HP player. Whatever.

This is how I feel about most Oscar smashes.

Anyone with a comment on The King's Speech? I love, Love, LOVE Firth, but it seemed like a weak premise for a movie, so I was less than enthusiastic.

message 2953: by Aynge (new)

Aynge (ayngemac) | 1202 comments I watched Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist last night. Boring. Then The Sandlot came on the Fox Movie Channel. I hadn't seen that since it came out in the 90's. Great flick.

I thought the King's Speech was excellent. A fascinating time in British history, so not a weak premise in my book.

Nick and Norah was boring? *grumbles to self*

I'm sure you're right, SP. I just wasn't feeling it. I'm sure I'll like it, and I know I'll watch it eventually.

message 2957: by [deleted user] (new)

Sandlot was classic.

Lyzzibug ~Still Breathing~ (lyzzibug) | 708 comments Shopping at the dollar store yesterday, I found Stir Crazy, See No Evil, Hear No Evil, and Another You for $8.

message 2959: by [deleted user] (new)

Stir Crazy is classic!

message 2960: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments I remember most of the lines from Stir Crazy. I remember the ending the most, because I worked in a theater when it came out & I would be standing in the back, ready to clean up as people left.

"Aren't you forgetting something?"
"Wh...What?"
"What about my opening night?"
"Am I ... ... Am I still invited?"
"How many times do I have to ask?"
"Whoopeeeeee!"

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I wonder if Sally's seen The Sandlot yet... we recommended it to her a while back.

Yes, Sarah Pi... it holds up. I wonder how much of that was nostalgic, though.

message 2962: by [deleted user] (new)

Holy jeebus, that movie was a BLAST OF FUN. From the first scene to the last, I had a big, dopey smile on my face.

message 2963: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I loved all the Toronto-ness. Casa Loma (where the movie set extras battle occured) was near our first house in Toronto and we used to sneak in during parties.

But why did Michael Cera, a Canadian actor in a film actually set in Canada, say "Drah-ma" instead of a-is-for-apple "DRA-ma?"

message 2964: by ms.petra (new)

ms.petra (mspetra) Robert De Niro and Edward Norton in Stone. Good acting and a strong start, but the ending was unsatisfying.

Watched the A-Team for nostalgia, and because I saw Liam Neeson on Graham Norton the other day and I really like Neeson.

It was rubbish.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I saw Hanna yesterday, about a girl trained by her agent father, and the CIA is after her. Lots of action and exciting chase and escape scenes, and I actually believed she could beat up grown men, but I wanted more explanation and back story.

Also, what's with the trend to have girls be these tough and deadly figher types? There was Kick-Ass, and then True Grit (sort of), and Winter's Bone, and The Hunger Games is coming up. What does it mean?

Phoenix (phoenixapb) | 1619 comments That all of us women folk need to get martial arts training and start kicking the crap out of bad guys because the cops are getting fat and lazy. Yay for vigilante justice!

Or not.

Is this the one with the girl from the Lonely Bones movie?

message 2972: by [deleted user] (new)

Salt.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Jim, yes, this girl, whose name I don't know how to pronounce, and who I remembered from Atonement:

Saoirse Ronan

Ms. Petra, I want to see Source Code, too! Too bad we don't live closer, we could be movie buddies.

message 2974: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I want to be movie buddies too! Source Code commercials looked kind of cheesy, but it was directed by Duncan Jones (formerly Zowie Bowie) and he directed Moon and I've heard Source Code is actually good SF.

message 2975: by [deleted user] (new)

I do want to see Source Code as well. Duncan Jones really impressed me with Moon, even if you could see the end coming; I understand the ending of Source Code is the subject of much chatter online.

Duncan Jones is a filmmaker whose stock is rising very fast.

message 2979: by ms.petra (new)

ms.petra (mspetra) that was weird....

message 2980: by [deleted user] (new)

I believe Saoirse's name is pronounced "SHORE-SHAH." At least that's how I heard her pronounce her name.

message 2981: by ms.petra (new)

ms.petra (mspetra) @lila - I watched Conviction a couple of weeks ago and really enjoyed it.

I saw two movies this weekend, RIO and SUCKERPUNCH.
I am a fool for animation and I LOVED RIO! It was predictable, yes, but absolutely stunning graphics and just a feel good movie.
Suckerpunch is also a visual treat. There are three layers of story, but I had no problem following along. I loved the badass Baby Doll and her cohorts. At times it was like watching a video game on the big screen, but ultimately the message of believe in yourself and fight for what you believe in comes through loud and clear. Also, I enjoyed the music in both movies.

RA, I watched the original Tron yesterday, and couldn't figure out what it was that I found so appealing when I was 11 years old. Utterly corny.

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments I must say the maids in the movie trailer look a lot more bad ass than the maids in the book "The Help." And the journalist girl looks way sassier, especially one on one with Hilly.

message 2989: by ms.petra (new)

ms.petra (mspetra) I watched The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest today. This entire Swedish series was fantastic! The US version is going to have to really step it up to even compare.

message 2990: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Watched Morning Glory last night. It was a movie that came out a few months ago with Diane Keaton, Rachel McAdams and Harrison Ford, about a young producer trying to make it in the morning show business.
It was thoroughly mediocre. There was some better movie happening in the background with all of the random props and visitors to the morning show: boring dialogue occurred in front of fire breathing acrobats, the Blue Man Group casually crossed through the shot, etc., all without even a mention.
It wasn't awful, but I kind of started getting mad at it early, when the young producer was told by her mother "When you were 18 and had a dream it was cute. When you were 21 and still had a dream it was awkward. Now you're 28 and still have a dream and I really think you need to put it away because it's embarrassing and pathetic."
And there were no other scenes with this mother, so we don't know if she's just a harpy, or how that attitude affected the main character or anything. It was a HORRIFYING thing for someone to say to their child in any context and I hated the movie for putting it out there without any development.

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments "Rachel McAdams romantic comedy" and "mediocre" go together like...um..."romantic comedy" and that lady who's always in romantic comedies but got kicked off of Gray's Anatomy. I can't remember her name. The bitchy one.

I let my oldest son watch Jackass 3 last night. Oops. He now, I imagine, knows how to use "fucking" as an adjective much better than 24 hours ago.

Fair point. The difference is that Rachel McAdams is somewhat hot, and the Heigl lady is bland, bland, bland.

What else did your son learn from Jackass 3?

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Hm...good question...inflicting minor injuries on your friends is funny?

message 2994: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I'll admit, I'm entertained by Jackass, as long as it's the kind of goofy stupid stuff. I'm not big on the grossout stuff (portapotties, volcanoes) and I'm not big on the real-life spots that take advantage of people, like when they leave a fake baby carrier on top of a van and drive off, and kind of mock the good samaritans who run after them. I think that leaves me the minor-injuries-on-friends.
I thought the one where they rented a car, paid for the extra insurance, then entered it into a Demolition Derby was about the funniest thing I've ever seen.

message 2995: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I have several things I'd like to post in this thread at the moment:

1. This thread is too fucking long.

2. Phil and Jammies, I take back all that stuff I said about wanting people to continue to post in the really old, really large threads. WTF was I thinking?! We need to fix this. I catch myself avoiding the threads that are super long or have 30+ new posts.

3. I am watching The Dancer Upstairs. John Malkovich directed. Javier Bardem in the lead. May I just say he's looking the hottest I've ever seen him look in a movie in this particular film. This is not just MH opinion. It is verifiable fact.

message 2996: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I'm watching the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Swedish version) right now.
