Moon was great. It's a shame hardly anyone saw it.

I agree!

Aynge (ayngemac) | 1202 comments Just saw the new X-Men: First Class trailer. Got chills! Looks so good, but won't be out until June. I'm not liking James McEvoy as Charles but I hope it all works.

Mary (madamefifi) One of my favorite Sam Rockwell roles:

Gary Oldman is another "chameleon" actor; I have a huge crush on his Count Dracula:

We recently watched The Kids Are All Right. It was all right. No, seriously, it was really good. Annette Benning was fantastic. Mark Ruffalo is starting to give me the creeps though.

Aynge (ayngemac) | 1202 comments I keep hearing Kids Are Alright was mean. What does that mean.

I also saw that they remade Arthur with Russell Brand. Ugh! Why???

No idea. You'd have to give me some context.

"I also saw that they remade Arthur with Russell Brand. Ugh! Why???"

Bleeeeeeeech.

Phil | 11837 comments I caught about 1/2 hour of a movie on the hotel TV today. I didn't know the name at the time, but have just googled the plot and discovered that it's called "(500) Days of Summer."

It looked harmless enough, and had some entertaining moments. I'll probably Netflix it at home.

ms.petra (mspetra) Phil, I LOVE that movie! Do watch it and give us a review.

Jim | 6484 comments I really enjoyed the movie too Phil.

message 2860: by Brittomart (new)

Brittomart I can't remember which one I liked better, Paper Heart or (500) Days of Summer. I remember making a facebook status that was like, "Dear [one of those movies], [the other movie] did it better."

message 2861: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I liked 500 Days of Summer. It has a couple of really cute and clever scenes.

I think Bun had a really good assessment of the Kids Are Alright somewhere up above in this thread.

Have we not seen this story like, five hundred times? Okay, usually the partners are straight, but that's what it felt like to me, a completely conventional plot and relationship just transposed unchanged onto a gay couple instead of a straight one.

The story is kind of mean to Julianne Moore's character too, I mean she comes across as pretty childish and lacking in self awareness, but none of that gets resolved or changed. She just has to do penance, she doesn't actually have to address the imbalance of power.

ms.petra (mspetra) was it good, Jim? I just put a hold on it at the library a few days ago.

Jim | 6484 comments It was very good Petra, but do net expect to feel uplifted. It is not an uplifting movie.

A couple of girlfriends have invited me to the movies tomorrow night to see Black Swan. Has anyone seen it? They want to go 'gold class' which costs a motza.

message 2869: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) A motza?

message 2870: by [deleted user] (new)

An arm and a leg.

message 2871: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Oh. Hey I heard they had an earthquake in New Zealand.

message 2872: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes, there has been a lot of damage. I haven't seen a full report yet as I'm still at work.

I saw some footage...looks like there will be a lot of casualties. Still many people trapped.

message 2874: by Knarik (new)

Knarik Had anyone seen The Eagle???? I want to go see it, but I hear mixed reviews, what did you think?????

message 2875: by Maggie (new)

Maggie | 6 comments I watched Black Swan at the weekend - vastly overrated - and so is Natalie Portman.

The Kings Speech was excellent though.

message 2876: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I watched the Social Network last night. I thought it was very good, but I liked the King's Speech better. I was surprised at how much I liked Trent Reznor's score; I've never hated him but was never an NIN fan, and I didn't think he knew how to do understated.

message 2877: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Ack! Paramount is considering remaking Soapdish. I loved loved loved Soapdish. If I didn't include that in my list of movies I can quote verbatim, I did it a disservice. Seriously. Kevin Kline is fantastic.

I think I need to see that one.

message 2879: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments Saw "The King's Speech" tonight. Liked it.

It wasn't really anything more than light entertainment, but it was an interesting enough story well told. The acting, with the exception of the guy playing Churchill, was top-notch.

message 2880: by ms.petra (new)

ms.petra (mspetra) I watched Jack Goes Boating starring and directed by Phillip Seymour Hoffman. One of my librarians recommended it. The box says that it is a comedy, but I did not think it was funny. It was well acted and somewhat poignant. The story of two New Yorkers, invisible to most of the world, who manage to step outside their comfort zones to build a relationship. It is a quiet movie, but it does leave its mark.

I couldn't get past the fact that Churchill was Wormtail from Harry Potter.

I watched Get Low tonight. I'm surprised Robert Duvall didn't get a nomination. He was excellent. The soundtrack was really good too, if you like old-timey stuff.

The September Issue. It was a semi-normal documentary until the scene where Karl Lagerfeld explains how sales are so degrading.

Lagerfeld sits down next to US Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and offers an idea for a store featuring only sale items in an effort to make sure people who pay full price for their clothes never have to come in contact with those that wait and buy the same clothes for half the price.

As Wintour and her daughter (who has already expressed that she would never go into fashion as a career, thinks it's pretty silly, and will probably go to law school) smile. Out of agreement, or embarrassment, isn't quite clear.

State of Play. Pretty good. I found Russell Crowe kind of hot, even in his bloaty long-haired incarnation!

It's official: Computer-animated, talking-animal flicks have now reached critical mass.

Despite a shitload of Dick Dale-like, machine-gun flatpicking in the soundtrack - a great thing - there's nothing here you haven't seen ad nauseum.

message 2885: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments But isn't that the only computer animated talking animal flick with a Hunter S. Thompson tribute?

I finally watched yesterday. I thought it was gorgeous. Loved the acting, the score, and especially the cinematography. It wasn't at all what I was expecting, but I really enjoyed it.

My wife took three kids to see Rango on Sunday. They liked it but weren't over the top about it. She thought it was gross. Two stars.

Yeah, I think he's underrated as an actor. He can do some scenery chewing, but it's usually called for. I liked the nervous energy of Casey Affleck and Sam Rockwell as well.

Normally, Seth Rogen annoys the living shit out of me, but this one wasn't half bad. Hell, anything that doesn't involve computer-animated talking animals isn't half bad right about now.

Never mind in-vehicle hard drives and mp3 players; the Hornetmobiles all have fully-operational turntables that pop out of the rear console and the records don't skip or wow or flutter even during car chases. That's called a "bonus."

message 2892: by ms.petra (new)

ms.petra (mspetra) I saw The Adjustment Bureau today. I liked it, but then I like to ponder questions of fate, free will, determinism(is that a word?). Also, Senator Norris and Elise Sellas have quite a love story for those hopeless romantics out there. ;)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I have absolutely NO idea what this Sucker Punch movie is about, but it looks like the movie will be visually stunning.

It almost has a steampunk meets sailor moon/anime feel.

ms.petra (mspetra) I just watched Waiting for Superman. This should have won the Oscar for documentary! It is an amazing, heartbreaking look at our public education system and how it can be repaired and improved. I feel so blessed my daughter was able to attend a charter high school with high expectations and even higher results.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I feel your hope may be in vain.
