I was afraid nobody saw my question and it was going to languish in the middle of this thread forever.

So I shouldn't be scared of the alien movie? Because things like that really really creep me out a lot.

message 1302: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments It's not scary, but it is violent. And the aliens themselves are kind of creepy looking.

I say this as someone who likes action movies but hates horror.

message 1303: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I thought the movie was excellent...one of those movies that gives you faith that movies can do something new and interesting every now and then without a gazillion dollars' worth of special effects. But yes, I agree with Sarah, crazy violent...

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Well, violence is ok. I just don't like mind-fucks.

Sarah | 13814 comments I was a little afraid going into it since the series of previews leading up to it in the theater (Shutter Island, Legion, The Fourth Kind) scared the pants off me, but it was enjoyable, with only the occasional scene that I had to close my eyes, watch between my fingers, or bury my head in my shirt.

As opposed to the aforementioned previews, which gave me nightmares.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I saw Sherlock Holmes on Sunday, and it was such a cool looking movie, full of fight scenes done all in this slo-mo/sped up style, hmm, kind of like the battles in Harry Potter lately, come to think of it.

Downey made a great Holmes, he was completely believable as a screwed up genius. Plus, he has this warmth he brings to every role that makes me just love his characters, no matter how dysfunctional they are.

The plot involved a secret society and a plot to rule the world, with creepy mystical killings in between the battles.

But mainly, it was action action action with humor. The tone felt like Raiders of the Lost Ark, maybe mixed in with a little From Hell...

OHH!!! You make me really, REALLY want to see it, Jackie. I mean I already really wanted to see it, but now... really, REALLY!

message 1309: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Yeah, I'm more excited about that one too!

We tried to see Avatar twice this weekend and both times it was sold out. Must plan in advance.

message 1310: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I watched The Ugly Truth this afternoon and I have to say the movie was better than I expected. And dirtier.

I want to take my two oldest to see Avatar...but I keep hearing how crowded the theaters are...maybe later in the week.

message 1311: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments He wears tight jeans in that movie.

I watched it with my mother on Saturday. I was kind of hoping for a mysterious, smoldering, machismo machine... like in Dear Frankie, but no dice.

He was still hot, though.

message 1313: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments I reeeeeally want to see Sherlock Holmes too.

I watched Nobel Son over the weekend with Alan Rickman and that cute boy from Prime. I hadn't ever heard of it but it was really cool! Alan Rickman is an arrogant genius who wins the Nobel Prize and the cute boy is his son. The son gets kidnapped by his half brother (from an affair) and ransomed for the prize money.

Sweeter and i went to go see Sherlock Holmes yesterday. I have to admit that I wasn't really wanting to go but I let him talk me into it, and I'm glad I did! It was a swashbuckling good time!
Of course, the last fifteen minutes were nothing but setup for a sequel, and baby was stomping on my bladder something fierce by that time so I was totally over it, but as Sweeter says: I'd be down for a sequel of that!

PS: I ♥ Guy Ritchie movies. A lot. Nobody is advertising it as such, but it's totally his style.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments It was about 15 minutes too long, but I really hope they DO make that sequel.

Guy Ritchie directed it?!!

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Yes! Guy Ritchie directed it. :)

Yeah, I have the Special Edition Knocked Up DVD, and Jonah Hill's rant is spectacular. Kudos to Katherine Heigl for keeping such a straight face, because I couldn't stop laughing.

Knocked Up has a special place in my heart, because my wife was 8 1/2 months pregnant at the time the movie came out. That delivery scene, where Katherine Heigl's losing her mind? That was Jaime in the delivery room when Sophia was born. No joke.

message 1322: by [deleted user] (new)

Went to Sherlock Holmes yesterday, and like the others thought it was enjoyable in the swashbuckling sort of way.

message 1323: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Saw Avatar last night.

I haven't been to a movie in the suburbs in awhile. There was a little boy behind us who gave hilarious commentary through the previews ("When everyone in here laughs, it sounds like a sitcom!") but was blessedly silent once the movie started. There was also a man in front of us who stood up to take off his fabulous fringed suede jacket to reveal a sheath on his belt holding a ten inch Crocodile Dundee style hunting knife ("You call that a knife? That's not a knife! THIS is a knife!") Are those allowed in movie theaters these days?

Anyway, the movie:
Good:
AWESOME special effects and 3D goodness.
Very well imagined alien world, like all those fantasy art posters come to life.
Michelle Rodriguez and Sigourney Weaver
The CGI characters and animals were totally believeable

Bad:
The predictable plot
Sam Worthington's American accent, in which every fifth word sounded Australian

Definitely worth seeing for the scenery, though.

message 1324: by [deleted user] (new)

That is pretty much a summary of everything I have heard about it Sarah, especially the scenery in 3D.

message 1325: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I couldn't sleep last night so I watched 500 Days of Summer. Excellent movie, really, I would highly recommend it for someone just after a breakup...or anytime, really.

I can see why girls dig that...what the hell is his name...the kid from 3rd Rock From the Sun...Jonathan Gordon Levitt or something (I know, I could just google, but where's the fun in that?). He picks excellent roles, handles them well, and could very well be this generation's John Cusack except smarter and cooler.

message 1326: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Sweeter tells me he's not from 3rd Rock, he just looks like that guy.

message 1327: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Assuming Wikipedia is right, he's the guy:

Beginning in commercials as a young child, he went on to appear in a number of television films and series, including a lead role in a television revival of Dark Shadows and a film debut in 1992's Beethoven. An appearance in A River Runs Through It followed. He gained a lead role in the television sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun as the young Tommy Solomon, had a strong supporting role in the 1999 film 10 Things I Hate About You and performed one of the lead roles in (500) Days of Summer.

(Sally made me google.)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Oh, ok. But he's not the guy from Waking Life.

message 1329: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I really liked 500 Days of Summer, although I have to say I usually like Zooey Deschanel and found her to be just irritating in that. Joseph Gordon Levitt was great. He does pick great roles. I really liked him in Brick too.

message 1330: by RandomAnthony (last edited Dec 31, 2009 08:14AM) (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Was Brick the sort of modern noir high school one? That was great, I agree. Or was Brick the one when he's recovering from a car accident? Or something else? I already googled once, I'm not doing it again.

I agree with you on Zooey Deschanel, Sarah. I said to my wife this morning that I didn't understand why people think she's so hot. She's pretty, I guess, in that indie rock way, and she's marrying that Death Cab for Cutie guy...

message 1331: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
But he wasn't in Dazed and Confused.

message 1332: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Oh, I know who you're thinking of, Sally, that freshman...yeah, that was a different guy...

message 1333: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Brick was the modern noir high school one.

I thought she was cute when her schtick was new, but now I feel like she's always playing a caricature of herself. The AVClub refers to her as "manicpixiedreamgirl".

Oh, and she was the guest on the vegetarian episode of Top Chef Masters, except she made them cook vegan and gluten-free, and came across as obnoxious instead of quirky.

message 1334: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
I'll bet she is obnoxious instead of quirky in real life.
Sweeter really likes her, and I try, but her googley stare doesn't do it for me.

message 1335: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
I like her singing voice, however. And she seems to sing in all her movies the way John Travolta dances in all his.

message 1336: by [deleted user] (new)

She does have a decent singing voice, but she seems to play the same character over and over.

message 1337: by Youndyc (new)

Youndyc | 1255 comments RA, you are killing me! I love John Cusack. He's smart and cute enough just as he is.

message 1338: by RandomAnthony (last edited Dec 31, 2009 11:25AM) (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Did John Travolta dance in Battlefield Earth? That might be worth seeing, then.

message 1339: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Hmmm. Still won't do it for me.

message 1340: by [deleted user] (new)

Joseph Gordon-Levitt was also very good in a film called The Lookout, a very underrated thriller you should check out.

There is a new film with him I was just reading about in the papes this morning. Split time narrative, half love story, half thriller? Sounds good.

message 1342: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments I loved Zoey Deschanel in "All the Real Girls".

I just saw Sherlock Holmes and I reeeeally enjoyed it. Great slap-fighting!

Last night I watched "Broken English" and I thought it was really sweet. The French guy is sexy.

message 1343: by Mary (last edited Jan 02, 2010 05:28AM) (new)

Mary (madamefifi) We watched Public Enemies last night. It was, quite honestly, boring. Though Johnny Depp is a fine actor, this was not the role for him. Christian Bale was especially wooden but it's not his fault--his character, Melvin Purvis, was woefully under-utilized. There was no tension between "good guys" and "bad guys"--the FBI's actions and the actions of the criminal gang might as well have been two different movies. Also it was historically quite inaccurate. For example, Pretty Boy Floyd was gunned down by the feds months after Dillinger was (allegedly) killed. The soundtrack was the best part of the movie.

message 1344: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Yeah, Mary, if the movie wasn't film in Wisconsin and Chicago I probably wouldn't have been that interested...I watched most of the movie on fast-forward.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I agree, Mary. There was something missing in that movie. It was nice to look at, but it didn't engage me emotionally, either.

message 1346: by Lori (new)

Lori And it coulda been a contender!

message 1347: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments Avatar was very cool. the best effects i have ever seen in a movie. the CG characters made gollum look like south park. it really connected you with the characters. good story. i will say it def seemed like it was totally setting us up for a sequel. at one point i saw the horsey deals and i was like "those are not believable" and then i thought to myself "uhhh...and the rest is?"

also, some of the blue chicks were sorta hot. there, i said it

message 1348: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Sweeter told me he won't see it because it is an anti-US propaganda film. HUH?

message 1349: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments yeah, i am glad i am too thick to see things like that in movies BUT i totally can see how it could be construed as a def political statement
