Chunksters Read-a-thon!!
Kristi wrote: "I'm in, But I may have to sleep at some point...lol."Haha. Yes, I think 16 hours of reading is all anyone can handle, but the point of giving a full 24 hours seems to be to allow different time zones to run with it...
I am interested as well. Don't know how soon you want to do this, but I prefer a Saturday and Oct. 15 is out for me. I'll be gone all day.
I was thinking we'd want to give everyone at least a few weeks to clear schedules. We also don't need a huge crowd... just a few enthusiastic folks. :)

Good excuse for me to re-read
V for Vendetta?

I have to disagree with Judy about the movie though. I found the script poor and it diverged so far from the book as to seem like the writers had no understanding of Alan Moore's motivations and intentions.
It's a fantastic book, and an okay movie. As far as casting choices go, I thought Hugo Weaving was an excellent V, though of course I would have preferred to hear him read the lines as written in the book than as translated for the film. Still, he was a pretty ideal choice IMO.
What kinds of time zones are we dealing with? I know we probably have all 4 United States Zones (GMT-5, -6, -7, and -8) but do we have anything else? I know there are a few UK-based Chunkster members, but I'm not sure that's anyone who's interested in participating?
Oh, this sounds like so much fun! I'll be doing NaNoWriMo in November, so I'm not sure if I'll be able to swing it, but I'll see what's happening that day. At the very least, I'll peek in here to cheer you guys on. :)
Loretta wrote: "How does everyone feel about November 5th?"Does that mean that the theme of the Read-a-thon would be the English Parliament, with books all having to have at least something to do with Parliament (even if it's just that one of the characters is an MP)?
For those non-English who don't "get" this post, November 5th is Guy Fawkes Day. Having an English ancestry, I was brought up on it.
I'm guessing based on the silence that the answer to my question about whether anyone was in the UK or outside of the United States was a no... This will help me determine start and end time.
I can think I can participate a good chunk of the day so I RSVP'd yes. Is it okay if I have a couple of hours that I won't be available?
I think that's fine Andrea. I'm just envisioning it almost as something Twitter-like. I'm just hoping people pepper the thread with posts throughout the day, ever half hour or hour, anytime they find something interesting etc. So as long as you're active that day, it should add to the experience. :)
Okay! I just wanted to be fair...lol Whatever time I have to take out on Sat I can do on Sunday or something...lol I think this is a great winter event. If all goes well I would love to do it again! :)
Going to be a bit of a problem for me to devote a full 24 hours, because of grandchildren who live next door and feel free to come see Grandpa whenever they want to (and they are always welcome, even if I'm reading!), plus that's my sons-in-law (twins, yes) birthday so I'll be spending several hours at their party. But I'll probably bop in when I can. Oh, and those of us in the US will have 25, not 24 hours, for the read-a-thon, since that's the change from Daylight Saving Time and the clock falls back at 2:00 a.m. Sunday, in the middle of the time.
And, one other question. You said start at 10:00. Is that local time, so we all start and end on a staggered schedule, or do you want to specify a time zone for the 10:00 start?
My intention was that it would be starting at 10 a.m. Eastern Time, which is why I threw out the question about where folks are located (as, of course, I assume people wouldn't actually be staying away for 24 hours to read, but would work around their sleep schedules). I thought that way, those of us on the East Coast could start at 10 a.m., and when everyone else woke up they could join in. And then, I'm sure that when I go to sleep, those on the West Coast would probably still be chatting for a few more hours.
I know we've got at least a couple UK residents joining in, so I'm hoping basing it around Eastern Time won't inconvenience them too much. If so we can adjust.
I totally missed that that was fall-back weekend.
We can still edit and adjust as we get closer to the event date.
I doubt I'll be doing a full 24-hours myself. I have medications that require adherence to a sleep schedule. Makes me feel old.
Denae wrote: "I doubt I'll be doing a full 24-hours myself. I have medications that require adherence to a sleep schedule. Makes me feel old."I don't think anyone is doing a full 24 hours. I'd be a wreck for work the next day. But making it a 24 hour period (the exact same 24 hours across time zones) seemed a decent way to be sure that at every hour, at least a couple folks will be around and posting.
I'm not a slave driver! :)
Hahaha, it will all work out :) No one is going to call anyone out for sleeping or anything like that...lol
I'd love to join but can't do Nov 5th, I always go away with some friends on bonfire night and we have a big fireworks display... a bit too much noise and not enough light to do any reading I think! If you do another I'll probably join that one.
I would love to participate! I'm currently negotiating with my husband about it since we have children and weekend errands to take care of. I just want an excuse to do nothing but read which I haven't been doing much of lately...
I always have audible books going so I plan to listen while doing other things that might crop up (laundry, eating, etc.) Not while sleeping, of course! :-)
Martha wrote: "I always have audible books going so I plan to listen while doing other things that might crop up (laundry, eating, etc.) Not while sleeping, of course! :-)"That's my plan, too, Martha. I vacuumed while listening to The Three Musketeers today. :)
Turns out that is not the night I have to babysit to as long as I'm all packed for Aruba (leaving the Tues after) then I'm good to go!!
Andrea wrote: "as I'm all packed for Aruba (leaving the Tues after) "You have to go to Aruba? You have our sympathies! :)
Andrea wrote: "Turns out that is not the night I have to babysit to as long as I'm all packed for Aruba (leaving the Tues after) then I'm good to go!!"Of course, the simple solution to this problem could be that you should borrow/purchase an audio book before that day, so that if you still have to pack, you'll be reading while doing so. :)
Meera wrote: "I would love to participate! I'm currently negotiating with my husband about it since we have children and weekend errands to take care of. Kristen wrote: "Biggest issue for me is husband - of course hours of football on his part are a given each weekend! "Naturally. You expected anything different when you married him? [g]
Hahaha, I do have to go! I was going to skip because this year I am knee deep in student loans. My wonderful and very beautiful mother told me if I didn't go I would ruin her trip....lol She is paying for my trip so I could say no.My boyfriend watched football all Sunday as well so he owes me one :) he doesn't get why I would want to read for 24 hours...lol
I listen to books on tape during my commute, I don't know what I would do without them! I think this would be a great idea though incase I have to do any errands or anything that day.
Wait, Football on Sundays? Week-end? You girls are lucky. Football is consumed on Saturday (college), Sunday (NFL), Monday (NFL), Thursday (college until later in the season, then NFL takes over), and Friday (college) by my husband. Of course on Monday, Thursday, and Friday nights I do get a lot of reading done, and before the child I got lots of reading done on the week-ends too, so I kinda like it.

Hmmmm
Mine only watches baseball and then only the St. Louis Cardinals games. Other times he fishes. In the winter when he's not at the lake or on rainy days at the lake he's reading. Said he felt very guilty for not getting anything done last winter. Well, he did ... he read all of the Anna Pigeon mysteries and most of the Kate Shugak's ... he's now finished them and starting on another mystery series set in Alaska. I keep PBS busy getting mysteries for him!! I'm just glad he enjoys reading.

If the plan is a go, I would change the title of this thread to Chunksters Read-a-thon!
Also, picking a date would be necessary (a weekend I'm sure).
