Oddly enough he complains about my hobbies, if you can call them that. I'm a Special Olympics coach and I absolutely love my time with them, but he complains anyway. LOL

I love to watch baseball and football. I can get some great reading done, too. I have a 2 1/2 year old so I can't do a full day but I'm going to do what I can to participate. It should be fun!
I'm really excited about this. I've been pretty sick lately and as a result not getting anywhere near done the reading I would like to, plus a lot of difficulty concentrating.....hence the 5 books I have going! I am actually running away and getting myself a room for the night! Just me and my pile of books! :)

I live alone, so no need for me to run away, though my phone is going on silent.

I'm doing the Dewey's read-a-thon tomorrow...http://24hourreadathon.com/read-a-tho...
I'll check in here once or twice, and later let you know how it went. I want to try to stay up 24 hours, but I'm not gonna go crazy doing it.
I plan on getting all my cleaning done on Friday so the family does not complain when I sit my bum on the couch and lounge. I am even going to buy easy prepared meals for the day. I am sure my 5 year old and my 4 year old will make this lounging an interesting challenge.
Here is a little intro thing that Dewey's read a thon used...1)Where are you reading from today?
2)Three random facts about me…
3)How many books do you have in your TBR pile for the next 24 hours?
4)Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon (i.e. number of books, number of pages, number of hours, or number of comments on blogs)?
5)If you’re a veteran read-a-thoner, any advice for people doing this for the first time?
There are also some fun mini challenges among the blogs, I'll try to write down some of the fun ones (or hopefully it will all still be there even when it's over) and maybe we could do a few.
21 hours so far. While I'm wide awake, my brain is mush. I did not do a good job of balancing out the heavy vs light reading. I can't even listen to my audio book anymore my brain is so fried.
So, lesson learned, and I can't wait to try it again in a couple of weeks with you guys.
I just finished all my ironing and I'm 85% packed! This one one of the things that was going to be a problem for me readathon day. I'm also going to do my cleaning on Friday and make sure that I have no fuss meals ready for the day. I'm going to try and use the time to finish a children's/YA book challenge for one of my other groups. I think I need to read 15 books for that to complete 2012.
Now that I've had some sleep I can say that the experience was harder than I thought. Magazines, childrens books and audio books as well as a variety of genres to read would really help in preparation for this challenge. I only made it to 21.5 hours because of the inability to process any more words, but it was fun. While we read chunksters in this group a couple of quick and easy reads would be good to have when we do this. Would anyone like to recommend some?
I like drabbles and I really like this collection...
Lessons
(can be read in 15 to 30 minutes)
Count me in !!This is great for me, I need to finish up a few reading challenges before the year's end.
I will participate as much as I can, but will need to adjust some hours. Have a basketball practice for my Special Olympics athletes that afternoon. I forgot it would be starting up this month! :-)
I don't think I'll make 24 hrs (just trying to be honest w/ myself), I was recently diagnosed w/ fibromyalgia and I know I won't be able to function that long. I am hoping for at least 12 hrs. It would catch me up on a lot of my reading! :)
Sorry to hear that, Kathy! I've been diagnosesd with spinal stenosis. Explains the pain I've been experiencing for a long time, but is requiring some adjustment in how I do things. It may affect my reading, too. Two 12 hr spells sound like a good idea to me. :-)
Martha, I'm sorry. You may need to get up and move around a bit in between. We can complain to each other if we start to not feel so great the day of the readathon....and we can cheer each other on! :)
Kathy wrote: "I don't think I'll make 24 hrs (just trying to be honest w/ myself),.."Me neither. My eyes can't go more than two hours without needing a break; I can break with audio books, but still ... plus at my age I can no longer pull those all nighters I could in college. Early to bed and early to rise hasn't brought me any of the promised benefits, but I still try.
Are you going to keep this thread going for the comments, or will you start a new thread at the start of the event (which if I recall correctly starts at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time on the 5th and ends at 9:59:59 Eastern Standard Time on the 6th)?
Everyman wrote: "Are you going to keep this thread going for the comments, or will you start a new thread at the start of the event (which if I recall correctly starts at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time on the 5th..."I will start a new thread. This is just a fun place for us all to get excited. :)
And yes, you are correct on the timing.
I'm so sorry to hear that you guys have some new medical issues. The woman I used to nanny for had fibromyalgia and I know how hard that can be. It is becoming a little more well recognized though and I think that is helping to have more resources and information. I also have experience with patients who have spinal stenosis and that is known to be very hard because of all the pain. I hope you are both getting the care you need and taking it easy.
I've been complaining about all the pain for at least 2 years. Finally this year, the dr. said that I should probably be tested for this. No cure and the therapy made my joints worse so I had to stop it. I have had hip joint problems for a couple of years, too, so that probably kept us from figuring out the stenosis. I'm managing, just can't do much standing/walking before I have to sit and rest a bit. It's been great for my reading though! :-) I keep going ... that's all I can do.
Thanks, Andrea. It's not easy! I'm sure Martha can agree w/ me here. But what choice do we have. Give in or more on.......baby steps....
Thanks, Andrea. Kathy is right ... we just have to keep moving & not give up. I refuse to let it get me down. Just got done with our 1st basketball practice for Special Olympics. My athletes inspire me. They never give up either.
I'm getting so excited!! This is my very first read-a-thon. Anyone have any tips for me? I'm going to do a mix of books to keep from getting antsy. I also have an audio book going so if I have any errands or my eyes get tired I will have an alternative. I'm open to suggestions though......
I'm bringing a few novels, a few different short story collections, a few graphic novels I've been wanting to get to and an audio book. All very different.
I'm going to use a format for my posts. The only reason I came up with this is because from what I am reading, about readathons, people say they get caught up with checking in and reading posts. People can feel free to copy or even make suggestions for changes. Time:

I'd love to take part (who knows, it might kick start my reading habits, which have been rather flagging lately), however the day chosen is unlucky as I'm hoping to find something to do for bonfire night, even if it is only watching V for Vendetta again (which I have to admit I really enjoy!). I'll try to get involved as much as I can though. For anyone interested, I believe the start time translates into 2pm GMT.

I am following Andrea's format. I plan to readthe night circus. book
middlemarch. Kindle
Club dead and dead to the world ( sookie stackhouse series) Audio
We shall see how that goes.
I'm torn on what to read! My big goal is to finish Vanity Fair...LOL! I know, I know, you can all laugh at me!I'm also hoping to add a couple more children's/YA books to my challenge goal of 75. I think I have 14 to go. I also want to finish Before You Know Kindness. If I could make a big dent in finishing Bridge of Sighs, this would make me very happy!
We're camping Thursday & Friday & will be coming home on Saturday. I'm going to read as much as I can (and listen while I drive) so hopefully I'll get some serious reading done. I want to finish Rebecca
The Zookeeper's Wife audio ...
and make some progress in
The Mists of Avalon and East of Eden. (I'm hopelessly behind on these.) LOL
No, I've read it at least once before, maybe twice. It's probably been 30 years at least though. I truly love it and it seems like I just read it. I've read the first 6 chapters and it all seems so familiar. I love her books. I'm thinking of doing a challenge next year of reading one or two books by favorite authors - du Maurier, Steinbeck, Shute, Austen, etc.
I've only read On the Beach and loved it (the movie is great, too). I have now gotten it and at least 2 others by him from PBS. I think I'm at the stage of life where I want to revisit all those favorite books I read before. There's just not enough time! LOL
Judy wrote: "Good idea. Go for it! I've never read Shute, but like the others."If you've never read Shute, I'm sorry to say, you must add one more book to your tbr: A Town Like Alice. Five star favorite for me. it's also on the 1001 list. D)
It is being read by another group right now, but I just don't have any more time this year .... IF I want to finish my challenges!
