Ruby Tombstone Lives! (rubytombstone) Hi All. A few days ago, I started a discussion about cheesy romance/erotica book covers. A few people mentioned that the books they wanted to post didn't have covers on their GR entries. I offered to add the covers if anyone needed. I also mentioned this in passing on Twitter, and the next thing I know, I got a flood of requests for me to add the covers to their erotica collections as well!

I'm happy to do this, but I wanted to know if there were any policies for mature content I should be aware of. Nothing I've uploaded so far has been too "adult" though.

Also, since some people seemed keen for this to be done, I realised that perhaps they didn't want to post the details publicly in the Librarians forum to ask for this. I'm happy to update these book details for people, and thought maybe we could post a list of Librarians that are willing to do this stuff? Then they could private message us with the details? This is how I've done it for people I know - a private message with the GR book link and a link to the cover art, plus any details they want to add, like language and page numbers etc.

Let me know what the policy is. Like I say, I don't know how I get myself into these situations!

Paula (paulaan) | 7014 comments There is no policy - if it is the book cover then it goes up. We do not censor book covers.

The only thing is to make sure that the cover belongs to the ISBN and to create alternative cover editions if appropriate.

Edit: There should be no reason why people should not feel comfortable posting in the groups - there should not be censorship or judgements being passed in this group or any forum on GR

Cheryl (cherylllr) | 363 comments This is a site for ages 14 up (or maybe 13 up; I can never remember). And the reason GR doesn't want children on the site is because of issues like this. We're much more into free speech than in protecting sensibilities, for which I'm glad.

I wonder if your acquaintances aren't so much concerned about censorship or judgements as they are just plain shy. I'd prefer everyone be open & frank, especially here on GR, but if they're not, well, then, I'm glad they know they can get help from you.

Just my $.02, fwiw, as a newbie librarian. :)

Deborah | 390 comments It's 13 and up and it's because of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), a federal law in the U.S. that restricts marketing to those under 13.

Ruby Tombstone Lives! (rubytombstone) Thanks guys. I'm pleased that there's no censorship here. I did see another thread though that mentioned "Mature Content Warnings". What's that all about then?

While people CAN post to the Librarian's Group and say, "Here are the details of my entire porn stash. Please enter it into the database for me." I can certainly understand why they may not want to. It's one thing to add porn to your virtual shelves along with the rest of your reading material, it's another to post publicly about nothing but porn!

I'd really rather not be the ONLY person volunteering to add this stuff though. Would anyone else be prepared to add this stuff if messaged privately?

Paula (paulaan) | 7014 comments Ruby, why don't you post when people send you bits that way any of the librarians can pick it up or if you don't want to I m happy to be messaged.

I think some people want warnings on books so if they are "easily" offended or don't read "rape" fantasies then they know not to read the book and suggests have been made regarding book classification system as per films

Thanks Paula. If anyone wants this stuff added, feel free to DM me. Paula - I'll pass on to you guys if I start getting swamped with porn requests!

I was just worried that the "mature content warning" was some kind of site requirement or something (like it is on Etsy etc). GLAD to see we don't have that kind of censorship here :)

vicki_girl | 2764 comments Perhaps you could start a private group (or even a secret group?). Then invite the folks that are needing help and the volunteers to join.

I would join such a group and help with these books.

Marisa (moretta) | 127 comments I have no problem with it, either, as I add some books for myself ;) So, feel free to give me a call (I'll help as son as I can). And, if you follow Vicki's suggest, I would join to the group too.

Ruby Tombstone Lives! (rubytombstone) Thanks Guys - You're awesome! rather than start a Group, I've changed the title of the thread to let people know. If people still want to start a Group, I'm happy to join & help, but I can't commit to managing one.

Cheers again :) xoxo
