Do you add every book you love as a keeper, or are you extremely particular about what books you keep/hang onto?

What's your criteria? I know space issues may play a role, or do you have a list of qualifications beyond that which determines if you will keep a book you bought for reading?

message 2: by Jess (last edited Sep 29, 2011 06:28AM) (new)

Jess I have a real issue with keeping books, I always think to myself... What if I get rid of it and I want to read it again? But with space becoming more and more of a problem, I know that soon I am going to have to get rid of some of the books I probably won't read again or didn't particularly like as much as some of the others I have.

message 3: by Susinok (new)

Susinok Since I've got so many paper books, I ruthlessly weed, figuring that if I REALLY want to read it again I can get it from the library.

That's the beauty of e-readers. That is no longer a choice I need to make, once I get my paper shelves cleared.

I'm a tactile person, so I like having the real book on my shelf that I can caress and admire. I think it's my collector nature. I think ebooks are great, and I do have backup copies of some of my faves on ebook, but God willing, I will be able to have all my faves in paper copies.

I do try to ask myself if I will read a book again and if I can't say I will, I won't keep it. I am okay for space issues, but if things get tight, I might have to be more exacting.

I do think it's a good idea to weed out books you have no desire to read again, but I have done that too quickly and had to reacquire a few books I gave away in a snit.

message 5: by Susinok (new)

Susinok I've got my Kindle in a leather bound cover with imbossed trees printed on it. That satisfies my tatcle needs just fine. The fact that I can carry around 1000 books with me supersedes the paper look and feel.

Good point, Susan! I'm think I'm kind of an old school person. I am slowly easing into the techology stuff. My sister helps me a lot. I think I have that Victorian antiquarian/librarian personality too strongly. :)

message 7: by Love love (new)

Love love | 151 comments For me, if it's a 3* or higher I keep it anything less goes to the ubs. The problem is that there isn't many that end up a 1 or 2* so I have A LOT of books. I did get my Kindle last year and that has helped but there are some books that I have to have in paper. All of my favorite authors new releases I have to have in hardcover, and for some reason the BDB books I have to have all in paper and not on the Kindle and I am running out of room for all of my keepers. I was on Pintrest.com and found some bookselves for your closet doors that looked really nice and I have three of those closets in my hallways, so if I can talk my hubbie into thoses that would help a lot. =)

Noelle, I keep books 3 and higher unless I know I won't reread them. I don't buy many hardcovers because they take up too much shelf space. Ironically the BDB books are one of the few series I must get in hardcover when they come out.

message 9: by Love love (new)

Love love | 151 comments I really wish that I had started the BDB series in hardcover, it's my favorite to read and I love the way they look, but I started the series late and wasn't sure I would like paranormal and bought them in paperback. =(

I got the first ones in paperback, and I was miffed when she switched over. But I had to do it. I still need to get Lover Mine and Lover Unleashed in paperback. I already have a paper and a HB copy of Lover Avenged.

message 11: by Love love (new)

Love love | 151 comments I was able to get the hardcopy of Lover Avenged also. Did they not all get released in HC?? If they did I might just have to rebuy them all in HC, I know I'll read them again...

message 12: by Danielle The Book Huntress , Loves 'Em Lethal (new)

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 9851 comments Mod
I think you can get the previous books in HC now, but I honestly prefer paperback. It bugs me that part of the collection is in different formats, and they don't match. I hate when they go to HC far into a book series.

message 13: by Love love (new)

Love love | 151 comments I love HC but I hate it when my series don't match too. I'll have to look into it. I couldn't pass up the HC of Lover Avenged because B & N had it on their 5.00 table. =)

message 18: by Ally (new)

Ally | 75 comments I find I'm getting more selective about what physical books I will buy vs what I'll buy on my kindle.

I actually have a few reasons for this, my biggest reason is I live in a one bedroom flat with my boyfriend who is a DVD and game addict and our living is full of DVD shelves I can't get a bookshelf in there so my bookcases are in the hallway and the bedroom and I'll soon be running out of room. Making the kindle much easier for me.

However, I often find myself buying books on my kindle then having to get the physical copy because I loved it so much. Yet, living in the UK some ebooks I want I can't get therefore either end up having to get the book or not get it at all. Which ends up being more expensive and generally ends up in my read it swap it pile (UK version of paperback swap I believe).

Yet there's still that little part of me that would love to have my own library full of physical books, but I tend to read more on my kindle than I do physical books :( it's a never ending cycle!

I have a very small shelf in my closet that contains my all-time favorites. Other than those physical copies, everything else is on my iPad or my computer. I am a person who frequently re-reads, especially my favorite parts.

message 22: by Zee (new)

Zee Monodee (zee_monodee) | 688 comments I almost never re-read a book, unless it is non-fiction/self-help guide or cookbooks. So I might love a book but will have no qualms to return it to the library, delete it from my e-reader, or give away the print copy when I'm done

message 23: by Holly (new)

Holly (velvetsun) | 32 comments I used to very rarely re-read books, but over the years there have been several books (mostly from series that I follow) that i have re-read more than once. Case in point: the BDB series . :P

Over the last year i have read some AMAZING books, so my keeper shelf is just getting bigger and bigger. LOL

message 24: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Jackson (paperbackdiva) | 181 comments I have a keeper bookshelf but only 3 shelves are used right now. But I have several cardboard boxes full of books in storage. They've been there since my last move 10 years ago. I keep telling myself I need to go through and get rid of some. I know they contain some of my keepers--like most of the Georgette Heyer books, and some Science Fiction when I was heavily into it. But so far....

message 25: by Desiree M ~*~*~ (last edited Oct 02, 2011 08:31AM) (new)

Desiree M ~*~*~ LiveReadCollect (livereadcollect) | 109 comments I have more of a keeper space and then a second stage space where I don't know if I want to keep it forever but for now I do.

Books get added to my keeper space usually if I can see myself rereading the book in the future. If I can only see myself reading it once, it goes into my donate/sell/get rid of pile even if I loved the book.

There are a couple of exceptions to the rereading rule though. If I love the author or I love the series I'll usually keep/buy a book that I didn't like to make my collection complete. A book by Christine Feehan goes in this category, I wasn't too impressed with Dark Destiny and am unlikely to reread it but it's still on my keeper shelf because I love the series.

Books will also stay or be put in my keeper space if I'm collecting them or it's a nostalgia thing. I currently have about 50 Buffy the Vampire Slayer books, some aren't that good that I won't read again but they are staying because I collect all things BtVS. There are also a few books that I read as a kid or teenager that I probably won't read again and they are also in my keeper space.

I only keep 4 or 5 star books that I feel I will want to read again. A lot of 4 or 5 stars will get donated or traded if I don't think I'll reread them. I love Romantic Suspense/Mystery novels but I don't keep a lot of them because I doubt I'll read them again.

I have my sony ereader but I love my paperbacks and will grab a PB quicker than my ereader.

message 27: by Katya (new)

Katya | 327 comments I keep a few books in hardcover on the shelf but most of my books are in electronic format...I can keep them all then. Otherwise, I share, donate and cycle them around.

I dont add every book but trust me, not that picky :) My keeper shelf is huge. I like to reread books every few years or so if I greatly enjoyed them, or I keep them for the sake of series completion, or for a whole list of other reasons.

message 29: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Jackson (paperbackdiva) | 181 comments Do any of you collect autographed books? I have a few of those, that I keep even though I'm unlikely to re-read them. I'm not that into autographs though, and lately I've donated or traded a few of those.

message 30: by Danielle The Book Huntress , Loves 'Em Lethal (new)

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 9851 comments Mod
I don't really have that many autographed books, and mostly it's accidental.

message 31: by Holly (new)

Holly (velvetsun) | 32 comments Now that I have a Kindle, it's easier to just keep something I might want to read again at a later time. I should probably be more selective in what I keep, since I am usually drowning in books to begin with. :P

message 32: by Susan (new)

Susan | 7 comments I have a lot of books, but I try to keep the ones that I would read again or if it is a series that I really love I keep them in case I need to refresh my memory.

 * Kazzy * -aka Stryker- (krazzykaz) There are some books you just can't get rid of.... I would never get rid of any of my Keri Arthur books, especially the Riley Jensen Series.... and to the other extreme, I have a set of Beatrix Potter books in a presentation case that I had as a child.. I still have them and will share them with my grandchildren (when I get some LOL)! they are timeless classics!

message 34: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (sadstrumpetjenny) I keep my favorites on the bottom shelf of my nightstand. It's only my 5 star re-reads,but I have most of the BDB in pb b/c of the Borders sale, though I only count two of them as keepers.

I know the feeling about differing formats, it kind of bugs me that I have two of the Fever series in pb, and the rest in e-book. Fighting the urge to double up!

 * Kazzy * -aka Stryker- (krazzykaz) Jennifer that is so frustrating when you can't get a whole set! I have often bought the first few books in a series, and then the publishers decide to change the covers and have them re-printed, and bring them all out with new covers.... makes me so mad cos then my set doesn't match! there are also some novellas/anthologies that i've not found in paperback and so you have no choice but to get it in e-book. I have to say though I tend to rend more on e-reader now.

message 36: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (sadstrumpetjenny) I read most of them on e-reader too, and am grateful for that when I get into a series with cheesy covers (like Psy-Changeling - love the books, but those covers BUG me!)

message 37: by Bridget (new)

Bridget Bowers (bridgetbowers) | 23 comments I'm a complete book-o-holic pack rat. I just can't imagine parting with a book. I do manage to give up some when I really just didn't care for the story, but otherwise, I'm a big fan of reading books a second, third, fourth...well, you get the idea.

My sister and I used to trade books back and forth, but she's recently went ebook and is dragging me with her. I am still surrounded my mounds of books that I can cuddle up with in bed, but having the ability to carry an entire library around makes ebooks a great thing!

My sister is getting more into ebook collecting than me. I do read ebooks, but I like to have my keepers in print.

sometimes I go in to this used bookstore and I happen upon a book that, used, is cheaper than buying it new. I am going to be home recovering from surgery for a few weeks so will go though my "real" books and load them up to go to the used book store. I am either going to get e-books or get them from the library.
