How finite is your keepers shelf?

That's the beauty of e-readers. That is no longer a choice I need to make, once I get my paper shelves cleared.
I'm a tactile person, so I like having the real book on my shelf that I can caress and admire. I think it's my collector nature. I think ebooks are great, and I do have backup copies of some of my faves on ebook, but God willing, I will be able to have all my faves in paper copies.
I do try to ask myself if I will read a book again and if I can't say I will, I won't keep it. I am okay for space issues, but if things get tight, I might have to be more exacting.
I do think it's a good idea to weed out books you have no desire to read again, but I have done that too quickly and had to reacquire a few books I gave away in a snit.

Good point, Susan! I'm think I'm kind of an old school person. I am slowly easing into the techology stuff. My sister helps me a lot. I think I have that Victorian antiquarian/librarian personality too strongly. :)

Noelle, I keep books 3 and higher unless I know I won't reread them. I don't buy many hardcovers because they take up too much shelf space. Ironically the BDB books are one of the few series I must get in hardcover when they come out.

I got the first ones in paperback, and I was miffed when she switched over. But I had to do it. I still need to get Lover Mine and Lover Unleashed in paperback. I already have a paper and a HB copy of Lover Avenged.

I think you can get the previous books in HC now, but I honestly prefer paperback. It bugs me that part of the collection is in different formats, and they don't match. I hate when they go to HC far into a book series.

LOL Lady Danielle....funny one-Velcro!

Congrats Susinok! Enjoy it!

I actually have a few reasons for this, my biggest reason is I live in a one bedroom flat with my boyfriend who is a DVD and game addict and our living is full of DVD shelves I can't get a bookshelf in there so my bookcases are in the hallway and the bedroom and I'll soon be running out of room. Making the kindle much easier for me.
However, I often find myself buying books on my kindle then having to get the physical copy because I loved it so much. Yet, living in the UK some ebooks I want I can't get therefore either end up having to get the book or not get it at all. Which ends up being more expensive and generally ends up in my read it swap it pile (UK version of paperback swap I believe).
Yet there's still that little part of me that would love to have my own library full of physical books, but I tend to read more on my kindle than I do physical books :( it's a never ending cycle!
Well like Susan says, your Kindle definitely counts as your book collection. Good thing is you can put 3500 books on there!
I have a very small shelf in my closet that contains my all-time favorites. Other than those physical copies, everything else is on my iPad or my computer. I am a person who frequently re-reads, especially my favorite parts.

Over the last year i have read some AMAZING books, so my keeper shelf is just getting bigger and bigger. LOL

Books get added to my keeper space usually if I can see myself rereading the book in the future. If I can only see myself reading it once, it goes into my donate/sell/get rid of pile even if I loved the book.
There are a couple of exceptions to the rereading rule though. If I love the author or I love the series I'll usually keep/buy a book that I didn't like to make my collection complete. A book by Christine Feehan goes in this category, I wasn't too impressed with Dark Destiny and am unlikely to reread it but it's still on my keeper shelf because I love the series.
Books will also stay or be put in my keeper space if I'm collecting them or it's a nostalgia thing. I currently have about 50 Buffy the Vampire Slayer books, some aren't that good that I won't read again but they are staying because I collect all things BtVS. There are also a few books that I read as a kid or teenager that I probably won't read again and they are also in my keeper space.
I only keep 4 or 5 star books that I feel I will want to read again. A lot of 4 or 5 stars will get donated or traded if I don't think I'll reread them. I love Romantic Suspense/Mystery novels but I don't keep a lot of them because I doubt I'll read them again.
I have my sony ereader but I love my paperbacks and will grab a PB quicker than my ereader.

What's your criteria? I know space issues may play a role, or do you have a list..."
I dont add every book but trust me, not that picky :) My keeper shelf is huge. I like to reread books every few years or so if I greatly enjoyed them, or I keep them for the sake of series completion, or for a whole list of other reasons.

I know the feeling about differing formats, it kind of bugs me that I have two of the Fever series in pb, and the rest in e-book. Fighting the urge to double up!

My sister and I used to trade books back and forth, but she's recently went ebook and is dragging me with her. I am still surrounded my mounds of books that I can cuddle up with in bed, but having the ability to carry an entire library around makes ebooks a great thing!
My sister is getting more into ebook collecting than me. I do read ebooks, but I like to have my keepers in print.

Very good idea... I have 2 shelves and 3 thirty gallon bins.... They are all going and I will only buy e-books.. or maybe a little book here and there... LOL

LOLOL @ "Maybe a little book here and there."

sometimes I go in to this used bookstore and I happen upon a book that, used, is cheaper than buying it new. I am going to be home recovering from surgery for a few weeks so will go though my "real" books and load them up to go to the used book store. I am either going to get e-books or get them from the library.

I have the same problem, I don't get rid of any of my books, but I'll need to buy an e-reader to keep up with my book habit, as I have no space left for new books.

Thank you so much!! I have plenty of little projects to keep me company. Of course I am going to be a regular nut on here..lol

Seriously, I love this place... I am looking forward to just reading and finally going through all the threads here..lol
What's your criteria? I know space issues may play a role, or do you have a list of qualifications beyond that which determines if you will keep a book you bought for reading?
