message 255: by Chelsea (new)

Chelsea (rocktopusjones) | 338 comments A bunch of my votes keep getting pruned from each list, so it's nice to be able to lend support to different books. I really like the way you went about this, Mrs. J.

Roshio | 106 comments Some of my previously voted books are off so I had to be extra picky. Its looking good though. again, thanks!

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments Yes, very difficult. Thanks.

Meant for me huh? you need to learn to treat people with respect and be an example for others when you are the moderator.

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/6... Check this link, everyone said and agreed on that and Laurel said that she includeded it as such.

message 265: by carol. , Senor Crabbypants (new)

carol. | 2616 comments They were considered separate for voting. But since they happened to win spot #1 and #2, she combined them to make room for more.

Mach | 572 comments But who came first and who came second ? By the way Twilight is still on the poll.

Again, great work MrsJ!

message 270: by Laurel (new)

Laurel While my opinion is that Twilight would not be my choice for the top 100 (read it and enjoyed if for the light read that it was), I will argue that it belongs in the vote. It is not simply a romance with a supernatural element. It is a fantasy series as much as any other. People may not like it, but this is an opinion poll, and everyone deserves their say.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments We'll all disagree. Once the vote is in I'm sure we'll debate and argue for a long time about what belongs and why one book made it and another is left out. There is already a series missing I'm surprised isn't there...this is a vote. It'll come down to numbers. It's just the way it is. I'm sure we'll all always have our own top 100, 1000, or whatever.

BUT the work put in is volunteer, difficult, time consuming and UNPAID. Let's not make it feel unappreciated to. It's not like there's a staff of gofers working on this.

Again, thanks for all the work and pay no attention to the bellyaching. This is appreciated.

message 272: by Traci (new)

Traci Voted. I have to say I like the way this has turned out. It's been so hard picking only ten but this way we get to vote for more of our favorites when the list is narrowed.

But...what happened to Lord of the Rings, why isn't on the list? Lol. Just kidding. I had to. ;)

message 273: by Mach (last edited Oct 13, 2011 03:25PM) (new)

Mach | 572 comments That may be true Laurel but when we have already agreed no Twilight, there should be no Twilight on the list. It was on the ineligble list but has still not been removed. If everyone had wanted it on the list i would have no problem with it being there. Maybe MrsJ forgot to remove it, i have no idea.

S Pearlyan (purplewidow) | 84 comments One more round and there won't be any book that I've read :(

It was voted as sci-fi, so removed :P

carol. | 2616 comments Thanks for not letting this go. I've been dying to vent my spleen on some deserving target besides my pharmacology text.

All prior comments about the poll still stand; ie. you aren't in charge and didn't help, shut the hell up. Excuse me if I'm crabby about this, but 1)I see these questions as being excessively didactic, 2)generally demeaning a tremendous VOLUNTEER effort over what is 3)supposed to be a rather fun, group-involving activity. See about all of your above comments, Mach.

As long as it's fantasy and people are voting for it, I don't think we should remove it.
I feel same way about True Blood, sadly it's there too.. :)

message 278: by Mach (new)

Mach | 572 comments @Carol, i won't even bother responding but see post 267 about acting like a moderator and treating people with respect.

@Soan, I could not care less that it is on the list, what bugs me is that we agree on one thing and then something else happens.

message 279: by carol. , Senor Crabbypants (new)

carol. | 2616 comments How about you take a lesson from group dynamics, Mach and respect the fact that multiple people have tried to gently redirect your questions, gently answer your questions or gently refocus the topic. And you keep bringing it back to a contentious, ultimately disrespectful point just to be anti-authoritarian.

message 280: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (versusthesiren) | 357 comments If you don't like the fact that Twilight's on the list, just don't vote for it. ¯\(°_o)/¯

message 281: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 3204 comments I have to agree with the Twilight issue. I know that we agreed to leave it off the list, but MrsJ and those helping her deemed it right to put back on there.

The good thing for those who hate the series is that I doubt it will be very high on the list. It doesn't really matter, anyway because Twilight, like Harry Potter, is a publishing anomaly. It's bound to make these kind of lists, even if we don't want it there. :)

message 282: by Chelsea (new)

Chelsea (rocktopusjones) | 338 comments Obviously someone's voting for it, so whether or not I personally agree, Twilight is someone's "Best Fantasy."

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments As noted we'll disagree. There are several books I wouldn't (personally) consider for the top 100 fantasy books...but that's why we're voting. We have to prioritize and use our votes for the books we believe to really be the BEST. The problem is of course that the rest of you aren't as insightful as I am...but I'll forgive.

message 286: by Kevin (last edited Oct 14, 2011 03:17AM) (new)

Kevin | 284 comments I'm a little confused here, so forgive me if I'm being extra dense and missing things or stating the obvious or something.

This third round list is the same as the second round, list but again with all the low and high votes removed right? The email kept mentioning the FIRST list and that kinda threw me off.

Also, I was under the impression that we were going to narrow down the list to 100 and then put those 100 up for another vote to decide their positions. But now it seems we already have our top 3, is this final or are we still having that final poll? Because if that top 3 is final I think it's an odd way to go about this.

Edit: Just wanting to clarify that I don't have any problems with those 3 books or them making up the top 3

We can't all be Senseis!

message 288: by Danielle The Book Huntress (last edited Oct 14, 2011 05:31AM) (new)

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) Kevin, I am sure MrsJ will correct me if I am wrong. We are still trying to narrow down the list so that compile our 100 books. My guess is we still have more than 100 books, and getting all of them on the poll is problematic.

message 289: by Traci (new)

Traci In the first round their were alot more books. The first five (I think, I didn't work on this in anyway) had a ton of votes. Like almost everyone voted for them. But then with so many choices we all went our seperate ways. Some books in the final list had only two votes. Mrs. J didn't think that would make an interesting list (I agree) not to mention how would you decide what order to place those tied at two, three, four, (you get the idea) books? So she dropped no vote and one vote books. And locked in the clear front runners. The second poll was based on this new list. This is the third list. Again the no vote and no vote books have been removed. I'm not sure but more front runners were probably locked in. I think it's working out fine. It's freed up voters to vote for more books. Imo we'd keep voting on the front runners anyway so let other books get votes.

Leighann | 159 comments All I want to say is I've voted for Twilight all three times...

Ok not really but seriously ya'll let it go. Mrs. J has done an amazing job and I for one think we all need to send her cookies or something!

message 291: by Erica (new)

Erica (bookpsycho) Voted. Very hard this time.

message 294: by Robert (new)

Robert MacAnthony (steerpike7) | 218 comments What would be the point of keeping Twilight off the list? It qualified as a member of the genre. And obviously people are voting for it, if it is still on the list. So the only reason to keep it off is because people who don't like it don't want people who do like it to be able to vote for it?

Kevin | 284 comments R. Scott wrote: "What would be the point of keeping Twilight off the list? It qualified as a member of the genre. And obviously people are voting for it, if it is still on the list. So the only reason to keep it of..."

The 'problem' (not really i.m.o.) is that we had a discussion about whether to include the Paranormal Romance genre or not in this poll. Apparently a lot of people consider it a romance subgenre and not fantasy. At the end of the discussion, I thought, it was concluded not to include PNR in the list. So I was a bit surprised to see Twilight show up in the polls since it's the poster child of the PNR genre. Apparently some other people were surprised too and take issue with that.

Beyond my surprise I personally don't care either way because a) I was one of the minority arguing that PNR is a fantasy sub-genre and should have been on the list in first place. b) I haven't actually read Twilight beyond skimming the first few pages and seeing the movie (which was alright I guess) so I don't vote for it anyway.

Thanks for clarifying. So it is as I'd gathered.

I still think it's odd to already lock the top 3 (or however many we have) in place instead of putting them up in the final top 100 poll to determine their positions. Even though those positions probably end up being the same.

message 297: by Kevin (new)

Kevin | 284 comments Question: I didn't see Paladin of Souls on the list is that because it is considered a series with The Curse of Chalion or did it already drop off the list for some reason?

Because it's part of series - Chalion.
