Oh man. I wish I remember more about this. I think it might have been written in the 1990s, because there are references to grunge music and shopping at thrift stores for ironic shirts (the main character has a "fish shirt" that I recall). She's very sassy and starts high school sort of like Claire Danes in "My So-Called Life" -- like starting to work on a new identity. Makes new friends (who get her into shopping at the thrift stores) and goes to the lake where she loses her virginity by the lake, in a sleeping bag. Tries pot. I think it's set in the Pacific Northwest? Maybe Oregon? I loved it but cannot recall the name or author for the life of me. ARGH!

I'm certain this is "Girl" by Blake Nelson. It was also made into a movie, I think. I remember seeing My-So-Called life and being reminded of the book as well. Sorry for no link but I'm thumb-typing :-)
