Will Todd "GRAVITY'S RAINBOW" by Thomas Pynchon came highly recommended to me by a writer friend, so I bought a paperback copy in a used bookstore and, despite its imposing heft, took it home and started reading.

I think I made it to page 5.

I found it to be, at best, off-putting and, at worst, nearly impenetrable.

Why would a writer try to limit his audience by putting up such barriers to accessabiity?

I was so angry with the book (and recommendation) that I did something I've never done before: I took the book to the back of my apartment, stood over the open dumpster...

...and tore it to pieces.

That counts as "loathed", doesn't it?

Todd

stormhawk I have always heard it described as a book that many own and few have read.

I'm not one of the few.

But I mean to.

Someday.

I don't think I made it as far as page five before I gave up, so I admire your sticktoitiveness.

Yes, I believe in giving an 800-page book a fair chance!

Todd

P.S. Seriously, 5 pages was enough.
