Shannon (shananigansreads) | 355 comments I currently have an Aluratek ereader (which I have loved) but it will no longer open new files. :-( So it seems I will soon be in the market for a new ereader. It needs to support ePub and PDF files as a lot of my ebooks come from my local public library. Does anyone have a suggestion for a good one? I've tried a Pandigital one and had the WORST experience ever with it. Now I'm kind of leaning towards a NOOK Color but was wondering if there was anything better.

Fani *loves angst* (fanip) I have a Sony 650 and I'm very pleased with it. Opens all kinds of files except for DOC and kindle ones. Love the touch screen; very practical.

Shannon, may I suggest you investigate at your local public libraries if they might have some e-readers you can take out for a "test drive" to see which you might prefer?

Joanne (bonfiggi) My daughter-in-law has just decided to get a Nook Color, after doing a lot of research. She likes the idea of the classes at Borders every Sat. if she has questions.

Shannon (shananigansreads) | 355 comments That's a really good idea, Joseph. I'll have to look into that tomorow morning.

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) I have the same one you have, and recommend getting a replacement of the same for two reasons. It's cheap! (Mine was $60 at Menards, a large chain hardware store) And the buttons are large and easy to use. (Saw the Kindle at Walmart and the buttons to turn page, etc are tiny!)

I thought all the Borders have closed, leaving just Barnes & Noble.

Joanne (bonfiggi) Right Bill, it was Barnes and Noble. They look alike to me.

Bill | 2 comments I live in Canada, where we only have Chapters. As far as e-readers go, while I much prefer "real" books...I have over 3000 of them, I do have a Kobo and as e-readers go, it's great.

Ella I have the original Nook and still enjoy using it and works very well. The rest of my family have Kindles, and it seems they are paying up to $5.00 more for the same ebooks I buy with Nook.

Philip Athans (philathans) | 36 comments I got a Sony Reader for free at a conference and HATED IT--but when I got a smart phone and tablet I downloaded all the free apps and that's when I really started reading e-books. If you have a tablet of any kind, just download the free Kindle app, and get it for your phone, too. It will sync so you always have your book with you--awesome technology, and no dedicated device necessary. I'm all about the app!

Francesca | 4 comments I have a Kindle and a Nook.Kindle is lighter, I seem to like it better. But all in all I love them both.

Debbie (debbie_smith) | 43 comments I bought a Kindle about 2 months ago because textbooks (college) are so much cheaper. I love books so just thought of it as a convenience and not something I would really enjoy. However, I love it. There is a lot I still don't know about using it but it is easy to carry, lightweight, easy to download books (which are also cheaper)and reading on the screen does not hurt my eyes as much as on a computer.

Now there are several Kindles and the 'Fire' model will be my next purchase. I wore out my Kindle 1 and it wasn't working correctly, so I called Amazon and they gave me a lovely discount for a new one (I have also purchased over a thousand books from them).

Anyway, my recommendation to you is to download a Calibre book program (it's free). It can convert .doc and .epub files to other forms. For instance, if I get an ebook available only in .pdf, I can convert it to a .prc that I can upload to my Kindle. For anyone with a lot of books, it's a program that's a godsend.

Also, you can redo the book titles and upload them to your Kindle again. I always have the name of the book with the series and book number now and I can add that to the collections feature on the Kindle to find things easily.

I have a few books that were in a series, but didn't have an ebook available, but I can still add that to the calibre database...

It can also be programmed to download news.

Oh - you can't go wrong buying a Kindle. Their Customer Service is great, and I love the reader. I have the one with both wi-fi and ATT downloading, but I do a lot of transferring via my laptop because I 'fix' the book titles. I know several people with different types of Kindles and everyone loves them. BTW, the page-turning 'buttons' are actually tabs on the side that are not small. I would recommend going to Best Buy and looking at one, but buy it from Amazon directly for the Customer Service.

Shannon (shananigansreads) | 355 comments Update: I did end up getting my original ereader fixed thanks to the great support people at Aluratek. However while shopping around I did end up buying a Kindle. I've always wanted one and how could I say no for $80.00? Also my local library started offering Kindle downloads, so extra bonus. True to my tech junkie nature I would still like to upgrade to the color version of the ereader I have now and get an iPad2 in the near future but those can wait. Thanks so much for all the great advice everyone!

vard | 9 comments I loved my original Kindle because it had a memory card slot. Eventually I got two more Kindles, a keyboard Kindle and a Paperwhite, and I filled them both up completely. Also the Paperwhite has no audio jack and sometimes when I'm on a plane I like to listen to audiobooks.

So I bought an iPad Mini. I got it on a Groupon so it was a little less expensive than they normally are.

Here's why it's great: (1) it is roughly the same form factor as a Kindle; (2) it has a 64 GB capacity so I could download Kindle books (and even a few audiobooks) for the next 20 years and not fill it up; (3) it has cellular and Wifi so it is easy to download books almost anywhere; (4) I can also use it to take pictures, read email, play Scrabble, and read The New York Times whenever I want to.

On the downside, it is more expensive than most Kindles, and I pay T-Mobile every month for the cellular service, and it is backlighted so it's harder to read in bright direct overhead glare, but I still love it and I don't think I'll ever buy another Kindle until they create a really high capacity one with audio out.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) I have a Kindle Fire HD. I have watched videos on in like once so really didnt need all the upgrades. I do like the color options if reading comics on it though. I do dislike the battery and think it takes a bit to turn on.

Lin | 266 comments I have the original Nook with 3G, the Nook Simple Touch with glow light, an iPad, Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 and my iPhone. My faves to read on are the Simple Touch and Samsung Tab. I have both Nook and Kindle apps on it.

Spanxmcb (Yovanka) (spanxmcb) | 27 comments Can't do the tablet reading - my eyes seem to be sensitive to the backlighting. I know that doesn't happen to everyone. I was reading my Kindle library on my iPad mini for a while, but caved and finally bought a Paperwhite as my library has grown large enough that a dedicated reader was finally warranted. But my main ereader is my Kobo. I have an Aura H2O - which rocks if you like to eread in the tub (or beach or by the pool)! I'm a big fan of Kobo's open format. And you can expand the storage with a micro SD card. You can also check out ebooks from the library! Prior Kobo's were the Touch, the Glo and the Aura HD. I still have my iPad for graphic novels, magazines and/or comics.
