Libby | 27 comments Just finished the second Steig Larson, "The Girl Who Played with Fire" and found it immensely satisfying. There's just something very seductive about Larson's books... probably Lisbeth. But you're right, Susanna, they do start slowly. Both of them. But stick with it. I was glad I did.

I've read Sleepy head by Billingham and thought it was great, can't think of anything worse than being locked inside your own head unable to move or speak.
Enjoyed scaredy cat and the burning girl too.
Reading a morbid taste for bones by Ellis Peters, can only imagine Derek Jacobi as brother Cadfael.

ooo... that reminds me of a Dalton Trumbo film "Johnny Got His Gun." Anyone remember that? So sad. And horror-full

Spuddie | 37 comments I found this ISBN for Bad Guys by Linwood Barclay on Amazon: 0553587056. If you can't find a book here under "goodreads search" there is a radio tab you can click to search Amazon's database, which is probably a little broader.

Re: Billingham, I loved Sleepyhead and so far each other other subsequent books in the series I've read have been good too--if rather grisly at times.

Speaking of Swedes, I've just picked up Echoes From the Dead by Johan Theorin. I'm only a couple of chapters in but it's very compelling so far!

Barbara (cinnabarb) I'm reading Storm Runners A Novel by T. Jefferson Parker. In the books I've read by Parker the "detective" (who is a different person in each book) has a serious problem. In this one Matt Stromsoe's face was badly disfigured by a bomb that killed his wife and child; after sinking into alcoholism for a couple of years Stromsoe takes a job with a private detective agency. Parker is an excellent writer and the book is engrossing so far.

Vickie (iyamvixen) | 30 comments Now that's a good book! I love when I find the well written books with excellently drawn characters, the ones you want to reach in and smack around they are so hateful.

Vickie (iyamvixen) | 30 comments I am on one of my good streaks. All of my books are super!
Currently:
BOT in the car: BLACK JACK POINT - Jeff Abbott, 2nd in Judge Whit Mosley series
Purse book: THROUGH VIOLET EYES - Stephen Woodworth, alternate present day with shades of Minority Report
Bedside book: DISAPPEARING NIGHTLY - Laura Resnick, paranormal mystery that is making me laugh throughout

Spuddie | 37 comments Echoes From the Dead ended up being AWESOME! Highly recommended. I am currently reading The Serpent's Tale by Ariana Franklin and the other stuff I'm reading isn't mystery so won't discuss here. LOL

Jim | 101 comments started THE TORMENT OF OTHERS by McDermid

already scary and engrossing

message 714: by Ruth (new)

Ruth Love McDermid's book - but they're intense.

I'm reading Laurie R King's The Language of Bees. Good so far.

message 715: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) I loved Through Vilot eyes. I love all the books in that sereis. I was so sorry when that author lost his contract.

message 716: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm reading Sand Sharks by Margaret Maron. I like all her books. Good bed time reading. I've had Nevada Barr's Border Line on my bookshelf for weeks, can't bring myself to start reading it because her latest books have been downright creepy! Has anyone read Border Line yet?

message 718: by Liz (new)

Liz | 18 comments I am reading the new Dan Brown book, The Lost Symbol. I am almost afraid to admit it because I don't want to get mugged in the parking lot. So far so good, but then I like his 2 other books. I'll keep everyone posted.

Michael (michaeladraper) | 58 comments Hot Pursuit (Troubleshooters, #15) by Suzanne Brockmann I've been looking forward to reading this author, according to the back cover, after she first published ten years ago, she's written more than forty books!
This one is about Alyssa Locke who is a leader on a personal security company. A killer wants her to be his next victim.

Spuddie | 37 comments I'm currently in the midst of a good old P.D. James classic, Unnatural Causes, which is the third Adam Dalgliesh mystery. Loving it so far, I know I read it many years ago but can't remember whodunit.

My other read (and my current audio) aren't mystery so won't talk about those. LOL

I finished THROUGH VIOLET EYES - Stephen Woodworth, thriller and DISAPPEARING NIGHTLY - Laura Resnick, a very funny paranormal suspense.

Currently:
BOT in the car: BLACK JACK POINT - Jeff Abbott, tape 6 of 7, highly excellent suspense
Purse book: DIM SUM DEAD - Jerrilyn Farmer, cozy mystery
Bedside book: STAYING DEAD: Retrievers Book 1 - Laura Anne Gilman, pranormal mystery

Dia | 67 comments Liz wrote: "I am reading the new Dan Brown book, The Lost Symbol... but then I like his 2 other books."

Have your read Digital Fortress or Deception Point? Those are Dan Brown's lesser known books, but they are both good. They are not Robert Langdon books, but are equally fast-paced. I am re-reading Deception Point right now while I am on the waiting list at the library for The Lost Code.

Michael (michaeladraper) | 58 comments The Fire A Novel by Katherine Neville I'm reading "The Fire" by Katherine Neville. It gives me lots to think about. The novel has a basis in the game of chess which I don't play. By reading slowly and taking notes, I tried to follow the plot. However, the characters were rather cardboard and uninteresting, can you imagine being in a room with a group of chess champions and discussing anything other than chess?
In addition, the plot goes from current time to a prior time in order to give background. Sometimes this is an effective tool but in this case it made a slow moving novel sooooo boring.

Don't recommend this novel to anyone.

message 728: by Barbara (new)

Barbara (cinnabarb) I just finished The Purrfect Murder by Rita Mae Brown. This is her 16th book in the Mrs. Murphy series. In this book an ob-gyn is murdered and right-to-lifers are suspected...and there's an additional subplot about a crooked building inspector.
I used to love Brown's books but I would not recommend this one. The story is not engaging, the regular characters are flat and uninteresting and the villains are boring and not believable.
For this series I'd add Brown to the "who should hang it up" category.

Sakura | 15 comments Hello All, I am looking for a good Lee Child novel??? Can anyone recommend something????

message 730: by C.J. (new)

C.J. Lyons (cjlyons) | 19 comments Sakura, I highly recommend Lee's first, KILLING FLOOR, as well as his last two: BIG TROUBLE and GONE TOMORROW. But if you haven't read him before, start with KILLING FLOOR so you can get to know Reacher from the beginning.

Have fun!

message 731: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) I am reading Stuart MacBride, regrettably not yet on Goodreads. His site is here http://www.stuartmacbride.com/

He's a bit hard core, but I like that. Then again, I also like the M. C. Beaton, Agatha Raisin mysteries. I've read them all.

message 732: by Elaine (new)

Elaine | 30 comments I just finished A Plague of Secrets by John Lescroart. This is a fairly long series with the main characters Dismas Hardy and Abe Glitsky. It still holds my interest and doesn't seem in the least bit stale. It is both police drama and legal thriller, since the main characters represent defense attorney and the police.

message 733: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) I have not yet begun the Lescroart series. I'm too addictive, and already am addicted to other series. He is on the list though.

I just finished THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO. I started it on vacation, and thought it started slowly, and then about page 50 it really took off. Loved it!

Sakura | 15 comments Hello, has anyone read anything by NElson Demille??? Was just wondering what his style of writing was like?

message 742: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) I like Nelson Demille. He's actually a very good writer, and there are two I would suggest you consider

Plum Island and The Gold Coast If you like Plum Island then you'll know if you like him. He also wrote The Generals Daughter, which was made into a movie.

I would say start with Plum Island, then go to The Gold Coast

message 743: by Sakura (new)

Sakura | 15 comments Thank you very much I will try Plum Island.

message 744: by Dia (new)

Dia | 67 comments Sakura wrote: "Hello, has anyone read anything by NElson Demille??? Was just wondering what his style of writing was like?"
I haven't read anything of his I didn't like. The Charm School is one of my all time favorites books. It is one of my go-to books when I am out of new reading material. I have probably read it four or five times, and enjoyed it each time. Good, interesting story and very suspenseful

message 745: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Dia, I agree, he is a very skilled writer. I suggested Plum Island because it is a very complex piece of work.

But! What did you think of Up Country?

message 746: by Dia (new)

Dia | 67 comments What did you think of Up Country?"

I loved it. It made me cry. I agree about Plum Island. I liked the suspense and the fact it made me laugh out loud. The other John Corey books are great too. His character's sense of humor is right up my alley.

message 747: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) I loved it. It made me cry. I didn't cry, too macho for all that you know. hahahahahaa. It was the most odd in his body of work. I think it is also the most personal.

message 748: by Dia (new)

Dia | 67 comments Awwww c'mon Stephen!! A good book cry is good for you!! *L* I think the "personalness" is why it made me cry. The emotions of his returning to a place that held such horrible memories. His only book that I couldn't get into was Spencerville. I will try it again some day.

message 749: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Dia, I see we are of an age. Vietnam is a vivid memory to both of us. Yeah, Spencerville seemed too much like he was an author in search of a subject.
