stormhawk | 1184 comments I noticed a similar thread in the Horror section, and decided to start one here!

I read a lot of science fiction, and may have trouble keeping this to only 10! I am trying to keep it to one book per author.

(these are not in order of preference, because my mostest favorite is sometimes variable)

1. Dune - Frank Herbert
2. Stranger in a Strange Land - Robert A. Heinlein
3. Fahrenheit 451 - Ray Bradbury
4. Ringworld - Larry Niven
5. The Android's Dream - John Scalzi
6. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? - Philip K. Dick
7. Count Zero - William Gibson
8. Snow Crash - Neal Stephenson
9. Childhood's End - Arthur C. Clarke
10. Crystal Singer - Anne McCaffrey

Heidi Angell (heidiangell) | 211 comments Ugh... I don't know if I can do this. Here is a go (Not in any particular order.)

1. Anything by Orson Scott Card (I know, he doesn't just write sci-fi, but I love EVERYTHING he writes!!)
2. Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis, and of course the other two books in the trilogy!
3. Trapped by James Alan Gardner. It has a fantasy feel, despite the sci-fi materiel, which I felt was very original.
4. The Pandora Prescription by James Sheridan (It is technically a thriller novel, but the science in the fiction is brilliant!!)
5. The Robots at Dawn by Isaac Asimov
6. The host by Stephanie Myer
7. A Wrinkle in Time By Madeline L'Engle
8. Anything by Michael Crichton
9. World War Z By Max Brooks
10. I am Legend by Richard Matheson... and all of the movies that it spawned! I know it sort of falls under the horror genre, but the science in the fiction was... interesting!

Heidi Angell (heidiangell) | 211 comments Cary, nothing wrong with old-school. They are, after all, classics for a reason ;)

Cary (vortigern) | 344 comments Indeed that's true Heidi. Insterestingly enough many of the scifi written by Verne came true. Master of the World about a giant airplane. 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea,From Earth to Moon. All written before anyone had seriously thought of planes, submarines, and moon landings. All of which came to pass. My favorite film version of I am Legend is Omega Man with Charlten Heston. Will smith version is good too. Of course none are on par with the book itself. I was suprised at how short it was. ; )

Heidi Angell (heidiangell) | 211 comments Too true! Jules was a genius!
I kind of enjoyed I am Omega. It was a really bad b-movie that came out right before I am Legend, but when they said it was supposed to be based on the book, I was like WHAT?!?!?! The only copy my local store had of Omega Man was messed up, so I never got to see past the first ten minutes. Will have to see if it is on Hulu!

Cary (vortigern) | 344 comments Heston did some good Scifi. Planet of the Apes which they tried to redo. Is not near as good as the Heston version. Omega Man has a virus that turns people into night seeking mutants. Nothing vampire about it. They are a bunch of mutants in hooded robes led by a black cat named Methias. Who is always trying to get Heston at night. Heston is always hunting Methias by day. In the end he meets some people, and choppers the antitode out before he is killed by the mutants. A good movie with a first rate actor. Sometimes B movies can be interesting & artsy however.
