A Feast For Crows (A Song of Ice and Fire, #4) by George R.R. Martin (buddy 4th in series read) start date September 7th

14) We now know Brienne is looking for Sansa and she isn't the only one. Why do you think she left her "friends"? To get away from her competition so to speak or for another reason?
15) Do you think the rumors of Brienne killing Renly will ultimately lead to her demise?
16) Interesting only Jaime's teasing bothered Brienne. Could she perhaps have feelings for him? Could you imagine Cersei's reaction if Jaime were to pick Brienne over her. :)
17) What did you think of the mouse transition between chapters 4 & 5? Wonder why Martin did that? Is there a hidden meaning? Could it represent spies or something?
18) Samwell is hunting for information about the Others. Not much new information to be had. Just a reaffirming of what is there. Do you think that Jon should have sent Samwell away? Do you think he resents being voted to his current position? Interesting how many Stark relatives seemed to have taken the position as Wall commander.
19) Had to chuckle at the nick name "Sam the Seducer". Why do you think Gilly fled the way she did from Samwell? Why did she not like him calling her Lady?
20) Dragonsteel = Valyrian steel? Could this be a lost reason as to why a weapon forged of valyrian steel is so cherished and prized?
21) What is so awful about becoming a maester?
22) What the heck?????? Why is everything associated with R'hllor so Creepy???? What were your thoughts on the city Arya is in? Why do they not like her being a Stark?
23) Funeral was pretty uneventful. Thoughts on poor Lancel? Do you think her uncle knows about the affair?
24) Shocker!!! Ser Kevan was a surprise. Did you see his ultimatum coming?
25) I don't think it's right to marry Margaret to Tommen.
26) What did you think of Lady Merryweather, the only person who supposedly impressed Cersei?
27) What did you think of Cersei's reaction to Lolly naming her child after Tywin?
28) Do you think the issue of Master of Coin will come into play later?
Questions for Chapters 8 (Jaime) - 11 (The Kracken's Daughter)
28) Jaime is feeling guilty for letting Tyrion get away. He feels responsible for his father's death. What do you think Cersei would do if he confessed?
29) Do you think Varys is with Tyrion? Do you think he'll show his face at the castle again?
30) Is it just me or is it a bit morbid the way they keep talking about Tywin's corpse smiling? Can we not go there? Ewww!
31) Sound like Jaime will believe what Tyrion said about Cersei sleeping around. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. He also seems to be catching on to the fact she only seeks him out when she needs something.
32) What do you think of Cersei comparing herself to her father? Didn't she used to do this with Jaime?
33) Seems like the painting of the shield is a big deal. I'm not sure why. A tree with leaves and fallings stars. Wonder what it means?
34) Seems like Brienne is on the right track to finding Sansa and finding out what happened. She now knows a third person was probably involved in spiriting her away.
35) Are you worried for Sansa? So far it doesn't seem like Littlefinger is making any more advances on her. He is sharing enough information that she could probably get him hanged for treason.
35) Who is the real man Petyr or Littlefinger?
36) Is there still hope for little Robert? What do you think of Sansa taking care of him? I'm wondering if he has epilepsy?
37) What do you think of Asha's wish to rule? Not a big surprise, but can she pull it off? Do you think she and Cersei may be spun from the same cloth?
38) Do you think Theon's truly dead? Sounded like he was a goner, but he's not the first person we've thought that of.
A little side note: I heard a rumor that the people making the TV show are going to change either Asha's or Osha's name because the two sound too similar. What do you think of that?
Actress cast as Brienne...honestly, this actress is not ugly. Guess they'll use makeup and prosthetics?

Questions for Chapter 12 (Cersei) through Chapter 15 (Samwell)
39. I think Cersei is truly losing it. She’s going to be Nut Bunny 2. She has lost her son and father, and essentially she has lost the twin brother she was in love with. She is completely paranoid and (rightfully) trusts no one. She keeps flashing back to Maggy the Frog who told Cersei a more beautiful and younger queen would take her place and take all she holds dear. Cersei thinks this could be Margaery, but it could also be Myrcella. I hope it is Daenerys! Do you think Lady Merryweather is telling the truth about Senelle spying for the Tyrells? We know that Tyrion didn’t poison Joff, yet Lady Merryweather testified she saw Tyrion do it. Is someone paying her or is she just out to gain Cersei’s favor? (apologies if this is a rambling post.)
40. Do you think that the Tyrells were justified in wanting Tommen and Margaery to sleep together? I think it’s odd, given there’s no way they’re going to consummate the marriage. What purpose does this serve? Merely symbolic?
41. Oh, looks like we may have a Hound sighting. It’s definitely possible that he still lives. I think Cersei is right to fear his return.
42. The end of the chapter finds Cersei linking arms with Kettleblack and gleefully watching the tower burn. Do you think she intended this as a direct insult to Jaime? Also, does she seem crazy to you or is it just me?
43. In The Soiled Knight’s Chapter there appears to be the beginning of a war between those who want Myrcella as Queen and those who want Tommen. Which child do you believe has the greater claim to the throne? I was surprised Arys let his manhood rule his brain when he agreed to stand for Myrcella. His love for Arianne appears to be genuine, but I fear she is playing him like a Stradivarius. I don’t even want to try to speculate who in Westeros will stand for Tommen and who will stand for Myrcella.
44. OK, so it took a long time to sink in that Randyll Tarly is Sam’s father. I am a little slow. After witnessing how brutal he is when dispensing his justice, I have to say it must have been very difficult for Sam growing up, and also, how could Sam be related to this guy? Perhaps his mom had a honey on the side? Hey, it could happen!
45. Brienne has proven herself capable of taking on the role of knight. Why is Tarly so against it? Do you suppose he is threatened by her?
46. I was really getting tired of Sam’s puking and Gilly’s sobbing. Finally we are told the babies were switched (way to go, Lisa Kay!!). I can completely sympathize with her now and I felt bad for being annoyed at her. So, Jon switched them so that Melisandre would not kill sacrifice Mance Raydar’s baby, but how can he condone any baby being killed sacrificed? Not sure I follow the logic in this one.
47. Any speculation on how Randyll Tarly will receive Sam, Gilly and the baby? I hope Brienne befriends them somehow.
Questions for Chapters 16 (Jaime) - 19 (The Drowned Man)
48. Ser Kevan doesn’t appear to know of the discord between Cersei and Jaime; do you think knowing that would make a difference to him in his attitude toward Jaime? Is there a liaison in the making there?
49. Jaime doubts Tyrion’s words about Lancel and Cersei but not about his killing King Joffrey. Is that frustrating or what?
50. Why would Bronn, now Ser Bronn of the Blackwater, have Lollys’s child named Tyrion? Was this his smartest move, considering? Does he still have some loyalty toward Tyrion, or is he just thumbing his nose at Cersei?
51. What is with having the large skull of Ser Gregor cleaned by beetles before it is presented to Prince Doran in recompense for the murders of his sister, Elia (wife of Prince Rhaegar Targaryen), her child Prince Aegon, and Prince Oberyn Martell, the Red Viper? To obscure any dissimilarity? If the leeches that were put to Ser Gregor died, why were the beetles able to eat his flesh?
52. Which Queen will Taena Merryweather ultimately side with: Cersei or Margaery? Why would Cersei let her know about her scheming with Ser Osney Kettleblack after Jamie warned her she is Margaery’s spy?
53. What was Jaime trying to tell Loras in that history lesson?
54. Where do I begin with Cersei? I guess I’ll follow Sandy’s suit, and go with more rambling questions about her: Which of her decisions will bring her downfall? Selecting Lord Qyburn for (her) small council and thinking him oh so clever? Appointing Ser Harys Swyft as (her) “hostage” Hand? Overindulging in drink, especially at small council meetings? Underestimating Jaime’s ability and making fun of him? Ignoring the “sparrows” invading King’s Landing? Thinking one High Septon will serve as well as the other? Not becoming involved in the politics of the Vale? Believing House Bolton would settle for half of the north after being promised the whole? Not paying the Iron Bank or the Faith of the Seven their due? Giving command of the royal navy to Aurane Waters, a man of questionable background and not exactly known for his fidelity? Counting on Lord Walder Frey’s death before it happens, or that his family will fight among themselves once he is gone? Believing a White Harbor alliance can be so easily achieved? Planning to assassinate Jon Snow by way of Ser Osney Kettleblack? Or ignoring the rumor of dragons?
55. You impression of Victarion? Would he have made a good king? Was he justified in beating his wife to death? Should he have thrown his support behind his niece, Asha? Can he forgive his brother, the Crow’s Eye, Euron; accept and honor him as the king to sit in the Seastone Chair?
56. What did you think of the kingsmoot? I actually liked Asha’s speech and she almost swayed me to her side. Alas, her nuncle, the Crow’s Eye, Euron, won the day. Think there will be dissention in the ranks?

57. Okay, I’ll admit confusion. Why did Dick Crabb (Nimble Dick) take Brienne to Whispers, the ruined castle on Crackclaw Point, if he knew that he had conned Shagwell, Timeon and Pyg by selling them a map to that local? Wouldn’t he have expected their wrath? Or did Dick really believe Shagwell was that much of a fool – and inept to boot? He couldn’t have expected them to actually have found smugglers in a cove that hasn’t been active for over 30 years. I don’t get it.
58. Were you proud of Podrick or what? Throwing stones at Shagwell – ha! I’m glad he is with Brienne. Oh, well. Might as well not get too attached. If I like him, he won’t last too much longer.
FYI – I had to get the characters for “The Queenmaker” chapter straight and admit I consulted Wiki Ice (I inserted some clarifying info):
• Arianne Martell (eldest daughter) expected a marriage match that befit her rank as a high lord's heiress.59. The BIG questions are:
• Instead, her father, Prince Doran, publicly entertained suits from various elderly lords such as Lord Walder Frey and forbade more attractive matches to high-ranking heirs such as Ser Edmure Tully and Willas Tyrell (crippled eldest son and heir of Lord Mace Tyrell).
• Prince Doran's apparently humble marriage plans for her, coupled with the vague misinformation put out by him regarding her brother's location, brought Arianne to the conclusion that her father intended for her dutiful younger brother, Quentyn, to succeed him, passing over Arianne entirely.
a) What will happen to Arianne now? (Assuming Areo Hotah is in her father’s employ. As captain of Doran Martell's guards, he arrested the Sand Snakes on his orders…so it stands to reason he remains his loyal servant despite any fondness he has for the "little princess" – as he affectionately calls Arianne.)60. What do you think of the “kindly man”? Does he have Arya’s best interests at heart? He keeps asking who she is; when is she going to ask who he is?
b) Who was it that told of her plans? Was he/she present at the ambush?
c) Where is Arianne younger brother, Quentyn? (Not to be confused with disgraced former maester Qyburn, in Cersei’s employ.)
d) What is the extent of injury to Princess Myrcella? Is she really Princess Myrcella or is she Rosamund?
61. Did you think for even a second that Arya would toss Needle into the canal’s water?
62. Okay, confused again. I didn’t understand the story about the firewyrms, nor the part about “Will I be like her?” “No,” he said, “not unless you wish it. It is the poisons that have made her as you see her.” What does emptying a stone flagon into the water of the black pool have to do with anything?
63. Arya, as Cat, is now to be more than just an acolyte. Will she learn not only how to detect lies, but change her face while in the House of Black and White in Braavos? Will she have to take poisons to do so? Pretty handy skills, those. Whatever will she do with them?
FYI – Something that stumped me – and I had a heck of a time finding it on Wiki Ice – is who is Bronze Yohn (the one who asked Alayne/Sansa “Do I know you, girl?”)? Besides being one of the signatories of the Lords Declarant he is:
• Lord Yohn Royce, better known as Bronze Yohn.64. What is going to happen when “Alayne” runs out of hair dye?
• Lord of Runestone and head of House Royce. He is sworn to House Arryn.
• He has a set of bronze armor, thousands of years old, that is inscribed with runes that ward him from harm.
• He has three sons, Andar, Robar and Waymar, all knights.
• He came north with his son, Waymar, when his son joined the Night's Watch.
• He was defeated by Prince Rhaegar Targaryen at the Tourney at Harrenhal.
• He stayed in King's Landing, participating in a boar hunt with the king, a boar hunt which killed Robert I.
FYI – Pertinent facts on Ser Lyn Corbray from Wiki Ice:
• He was one of Lady Lysa Tully’s suitors; he also stayed with her at the Eyrie for half a year after Jon's death.65. "Gold and boys and promises…" Just what are Littlefinger's “promises”? Does this mean Littlefinger might swing both ways – if it benefits his plans? Or, since House Corbray of Heart’s Home is a noble – if poor – house did he conspire with Littlefinger mainly for gold?
• Ser Lyn offered himself as a champion for Lady Lysa on Tyrion Lannister's trial by battle, stating that he was the surest sword there.
• He is notoriously not interested in women.

I'm afraid it wouldnt be a very good rating. Thankfully, there
are many more chapters!

I'm on page 150.

1) This book is entitled 'A Feast For Crows'. Going in to this one what do you think the significance of the title could be?
2) Any ideas as to who the alchemist was and what he'd use the key for? I was trying to rack my brain about the description and was wondering if it might be Varys or the guy who killed for Arya?
3) So the Grejoys are undecided who should rule. Anyone else think this could get interesting?
4) What did you think of the way Greyjoy died? Death by fall? Could Melisandre have had a hand in this one?
5) Anyone notice the change in houses for the Starks listed in the back of the book? Now they're listed with the other houses and aren't listed as one of the dominant ones anymore.
6) I now get the expression Damphair - Damp hair. I kept thinking of dhampir. Why? I have no idea.
7) What do you think of the drowning? At first I thought it was like baptism. I'm not thinking that anymore.
8) Did I miss something? What is a Kingsmoot? Where is a glossary when you need one?
9) First thoughts of Prince Oberyn's daughters, Obara, Nymeria, Tyene?
10) Any predictions about what will happen to Prince Doran?
11) Anyone think the Lannisters will start dwindling in numbers in this book?
12) Thoughts on Cersei and the way she treated Jaime?
13) Do you think Tyrion is long gone?

1) This book is entitled 'A Feast For Crows'. Going in to this one what do you think the significance of the title could be?
Was it crows or ravens who attacked the wights/Others when Sam and the Wildling girl escaped? Maybe the crows will make a meal of the Wights/Others, or perhaps this means many more people will die and will be bird food(?).
2) Any ideas as to who the alchemist was and what he'd use the key for? I was trying to rack my brain about the description and was wondering if it might be Varys or the guy who killed for Arya?
I don't know, and maybe this was why I didn't like this chapter so much. I hate being lost...
3) So the Grejoys are undecided who should rule. Anyone else think this could get interesting?
Yes! On one hand, it sounds like the Uncle knows who he wants to take over, but on the other hand, it sounds like he wouldn't mind taking power for himself.
4) What did you think of the way Greyjoy died? Death by fall? Could Melisandre have had a hand in this one?
Well, Melisandre did claim she caused his death (along with Robb and Joffrey). After seeing what she's capable of, I am willing to believe it was her.
5) Anyone notice the change in houses for the Starks listed in the back of the book? Now they're listed with the other houses and aren't listed as one of the dominant ones anymore.
I haven't looked but I will!
6) I now get the expression Damphair - Damp hair. I
kept thinking of dhampir. Why? I have no idea.
Me too! I keep thinking of Rose and Dmitri! (love Vamp Academy series!)
7) What do you think of the drowning? At first I thought it was like baptism. I'm not thinking that anymore.
I was appalled, then relieved when they gave him CPR. I think they believe they are bringing people back from the dead and thereby imbuing them with special spiritual powers.
8) Did I miss something? What is a Kingsmoot? Where is a glossary when you need one?
They didn't define it, but I interpreted it as a special council meeting in which a king is elected.
9) First thoughts of Prince Oberyn's daughters, Obara, Nymeria, Tyene?
My first thought was, is there some significance that one daughter shares a name with Arya's wolf?
I think the ladies are impressive, however I think they are wrong about their father's death. He volunteered to stand in for Tyrion, so it wasn't technically murder. I can understand wanting vengeance for Elia's murder, though. They sure wont' be happy to be locked up!
10) Any predictions about what will happen to Prince Doran?
I think he will be loyal to whomever is in power. He doesn't seem inclined to fight.
11) Anyone think the Lannisters will start dwindling in numbers in this book?
I hope not. They keep things interesting.
12) Thoughts on Cersei and the way she treated Jaime?
Cersei is taking care of number one. She wants the power and doesn't want to be told what to do. It's surprising how she treats Jaime now.
13) Do you think Tyrion is long gone?
Yes, and sadly we won't see him for a long time! :-(

I also thought maybe it was the guy who saved Arya
7) What do you think of the drowning? At first I thought it was like baptism. I'm not thinking that anymore.
I actually laughed because there was a quote , something like "yes, you were sprinkled with water, not really drowned" and all that came to mind was how the baptists say basically the same thing about how the Catholics get "baptized". They only get their head sprinkled on, where baptists get their whole bodies.
13) Do you think Tyrion is long gone?
sadly until the next book...

1) This book is entitled 'A Feast For Crows'. Going in to this one what do you think the significance of the title could be?
Well, crows are carrion eating birds… so, I would think there are going to be a lot of dead people in this book. But, then again, how is that a change from the others. I think it is prefect since a lot of this book is filled with various villains’ POV – they are feasting off their kills.
2) Any ideas as to who the alchemist was and what he'd use the key for? I was trying to rack my brain about the description and was wondering if it might be Varys or the guy who killed for Arya?
Gosh, I really don’t know, but I’m guessing either Varys or Littlefinger. Ah! Yes, Jaqen H'ghar. I forgot about him and I can’t remember if he has a scar on his right cheek or not. But, he did give her that old coin and told her the words "valar morghulis". They weren’t used in the prologue (I just double checked). If I remember correctly, when Arya gave the old coin to the sea captain, he was careful not to bite it, right?
3) So the Greyjoys are undecided who should rule. Anyone else think this could get interesting?
Yes. A whole new group of people to learn about. To quote Burl Ives, as Big Daddy in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, “A whole lot of mendacity going on!”
4) What did you think of the way Greyjoy died? Death by fall? Could Melisandre have had a hand in this one?
Hmmm. I hadn’t thought of Melisandre, though I don’t know why not. I just figured it was from within his own sphere.
5) Anyone notice the change in houses for the Starks listed in the back of the book? Now they're listed with the other houses and aren't listed as one of the dominant ones anymore.
No, I hadn’t looked until you pointed it out. I think that is b/c of the POV of this book. But, it could be b/c King Robb is dead and Catelyn presumed so, etc.
6) I now get the expression Damphair - Damp hair. I kept thinking of dhampir. Why? I have no idea.
I did something similar in mispronouncing it; isn’t that weird that we both did? Duh!
7) What do you think of the drowning? At first I thought it was like baptism. I'm not thinking that anymore.
Ugh, horrible! Salt water too. From a dirty harbor. Poor kid is going to die of aspiration pneumonia.
8) Did I miss something? What is a Kingsmoot? Where is a glossary when you need one?
Definition of moot ( from www.thefreedictionary.com):
1. Law A hypothetical case argued by law students as an exercise.
2. An ancient English meeting, especially a representative meeting of the freemen of a shire.
1. a. To bring up as a subject for discussion or debate. b. To discuss or debate.
2. Law To plead or argue (a case) in a moot court.
9) First thoughts of Prince Oberyn's daughters, Obara, Nymeria, Tyene?
They want revenge and all want to go about it by a different route. One is sure to succeed. Oh, wait. Lord Tywin is already dead.
10) Any predictions about what will happen to Prince Doran?
Haven’t a clue.
11) Anyone think the Lannisters will start dwindling in numbers in this book?
Ah. I think everyone will, LOL!
12) Thoughts on Cersei and the way she treated Jaime?
**Lisa Kay blows raspberry**
13) Do you think Tyrion is long gone?
Gosh! Now that you asked that, I just checked the chapter headings and even he’s not there!!! I hope he is well hidden.

#2 – I didn’t like being lost right off the bat either. (Or should I say becoming EVEN more lost.)
#4 – Melisandre claimed this? Why don’t I remember? I’m sure you are right, I just can’t remember. Wait a minute, was one of the leeches she threw in the fire named Greyjoy? God, why didn’t I mark those pages? Of course, then the whole book would be marked.
#6 – Weird we all did it. I haven’t even read Vamp Academy…
#7 – I think you are right. Again, “Ugh!”
#9 – I think you are right on all count, Sandy.
#10 – Interesting.
#11 – LOL! You are such a great Devil’s Advocate, Sandy. ☺
#12 - **Lisa Kay blows another raspberry at Cersei just for good measure**
#13 - ☹ (view spoiler) ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

#4, yep it was Chapter 36 Davos. The leeches were Joff, Balon Greyjoy and Robb.
#6 - Vamp Academy is really good. Strong, kick-a$$ heroine, good storylines, and a non-cheesy romance.
#8 Thank you for that research!
#11 Well, I like having people to root against. :-)
#13 - Love it!!

Not a problem for me, Kellyflower. I made the decision to read the chapter titles on my own. Hey, I'm just glad I have this buddy read, or I might not make it through the book.

14) We now know Brienne is looking for Sansa and she isn't the only one. Why do you think she left her "friends"? To get away from her competition so to speak or for another reason?
I believe she left because she doesn't trust them and she will be more successful on her own.
15) Do you think the rumors of Brienne killing Renly will ultimately lead to her demise?
I think it will lead to trouble but I hope not her death. I am rooting for her to survive the series!
16) Interesting only Jaime's teasing bothered Brienne. Could she perhaps have feelings for him? Could you imagine Cersei's reaction if Jaime were to pick Brienne over her. :)
I think the current teasing didn't bother her because she is immune to it. Cersei would have a meltdown if that happened!
17) What did you think of the mouse transition between chapters 4 & 5? Wonder why Martin did that? Is there a hidden meaning? Could it represent spies or something?
You may be onto something. I didn't even consider that. Good call!
Jon is sooooo different now, isn't he? Like a completely different person. I don't think he's resentful. It sounds to me that he is taking his new role very seriously. He wants Samwell to be his maester, so it makes sense for him to go away to get educated.
19) Had to chuckle at the nick name "Sam the Seducer". Why do you think Gilly fled the way she did from Samwell? Why did she not like him calling her Lady?
Not sure why she fled. I think she doesn't like being called "Lady" because she thinks they are making fun of her.
20) Dragonsteel = Valyrian steel? Could this be a lost reason as to why a weapon forged of valyrian steel is so cherished and prized?
I always thought Valyrian steel had something to do with the dragons. I am not sure why I thought that. I think sometime way back this was mentioned. I couldn't even tell you when!
21) What is so awful about becoming a maester?
It sounded to me like Samwell's dad maliciously punished him because he had wanted to be a maester. The Dad tortured him by putting rings around his neck to discourage him from pursuing that field. I think the Dad thought being a maester was not a manly profession.
22) What the heck?????? Why is everything associated with R'hllor so Creepy???? What were your thoughts on the city Arya is in? Why do they not like her being a Stark?
I thought she would be safe based on her coin and her catchphrase. Now I'm not so sure. Do they not like Starks? I thought the priest just meant this is no place for a highborn lady to be hanging out.
23) Funeral was pretty uneventful. Thoughts on poor Lancel? Do you think her uncle knows about the affair?
Lancel sounds like he's still lovestruck. Yes, I think the uncle knows everything.
24) Shocker!!! Ser Kevan was a surprise. Did you see his ultimatum coming?
I didn't see it coming. That was great! I wanted to high-five him.
Does anyone else think that Cersei is overly paranoid?
25) I don't think it's right to marry Margaret to Tommen
Why, due to age? I think politically it's a good idea. Of course, they have to wait several years to "really" be married. It was funny that Cersei entertained the idea that Margaery was a lesbian.
Guess that could be true!
26) What did you think of Lady Merryweather, the only person who supposedly impressed Cersei?
I think she's a Grade A sycophant.
27) What did you think of Cersei's reaction to Lolly naming her child after Tywin?
I thought she could have been a little more tactful. her response was downright cruel. Lolly didn't ask to get raped, after all!
28) Do you think the issue of Master of Coin will come into play later?
Probably.

14) We now know Brienne is looking for Sansa and she isn't the only one. Why do you think she left her "friends"? To get away from her competition so to speak or for another reason?
I think mainly it was to get away from her competition; however, she was antsy b/f they started traveling with Ser Shadrich. Maybe she figures Ser Illifer an Ser Creighton were counting on her to find Sansa too.
15) Do you think the rumors of Brienne killing Renly will ultimately lead to her demise?
Could be. What I don’t understand is she suspects Sansa of killing King Joffrey, but yet she knows she herself didn’t kill King Renly.
16) Interesting only Jaime's teasing bothered Brienne. Could she perhaps have feelings for him? Could you imagine Cersei's reaction if Jaime were to pick Brienne over her. :)
I think she does have “feelings” for Jaime that she doesn’t want to exam. Oh, I hadn’t thought of Cersie’s reaction. I LOVE it. That would be delicious.
17) What did you think of the mouse transition between chapters 4 & 5? Wonder why Martin did that? Is there a hidden meaning? Could it represent spies or something?
I was trying to figure out the same thing. I wondered about mice in the previous books. If Varys is also a warg, her could mind meld with a mouse in order to spy.
I kept wondering if the titles of the books Samwell came across held something of importance, but I couldn’t figure it out. Yes, Jon is right; I think Samwell would make a good Maester – and desperately desires to be one – but he is torn over incurring his father’s wrath. Nope, I think Jon Snow is relatively happy, even with the weight of the wall on his shoulders. Yes, “protection” and “defense” seems to be in their DNA.
19) Had to chuckle at the nick name "Sam the Seducer". Why do you think Gilly fled the way she did from Samwell? Why did she not like him calling her Lady?
LOL! Yes, cute. I’m wondering about Gilly and her tears; do you think Jon asked her to switch babes? I think she is just trying to reassert to herself that she is who she is. But, maybe she has a crush on Jon Snow, I don’t know.
20) Dragonsteel = Valyrian steel? Could this be a lost reason as to why a weapon forged of valyrian steel is so cherished and prized?
Yup.
21) What is so awful about becoming a maester?
Really. They are educated men of learning. I thought it was a respected position, but what do I know? Look at what we pay teachers in the country. People are weird about professions depending on their upbringing. I had one woman from another country treat me like the scum of the earth b/c I was her nurse and dealt with the “unclean”. Go figure.
22) What the heck?????? Why is everything associated with R'hllor so Creepy???? What were your thoughts on the city Arya is in? Why do they not like her being a Stark?
Good word, that. It was Creepy, with a capital "C". I don’t know; maybe it was a test, or a reaffirmation that her place is ultimately elsewhere.
23) Funeral was pretty uneventful. Thoughts on poor Lancel? Do you think her uncle knows about the affair?
Yeah, he is still in love with Cersei, poor thing. I’m betting Ser Kevan knows.
24) Shocker!!! Ser Kevan was a surprise. Did you see his ultimatum coming?
Nope. Total shocker. I loved every minute of it. But, he probably gave her good advice, which she won’t take.
25) I don't think it's right to marry Margaret to Tommen.
Me neither. Plus, it is an advantage to the Tyrells, so I don’t know why Cersei would go for it.
26) What did you think of Lady Merryweather, the only person who supposedly impressed Cersei?
Takes one to know one. She gave evidence at Tyrion’s trial that he dropped something in King Joffrey’s wine.
27) What did you think of Cersei's reaction to Lolly naming her child after Tywin?
I was hoping she'd chock on her indignation.
28) Do you think the issue of Master of Coin will come into play later?
Oh yes. How? I don’t know.

#14 – Yes, I think she will be more successful on her own.
#15 – Ditto!
#16 – Mind meld. :)
#18 – Yes, I think it is important that Jon Snow have someone in that position he can trust.
#20 – Me too, thought I don’t know why. Maybe the name being so close to some of their kings’ names?
#21 – I think you’re right!
#22 – I didn’t think it was so much they didn’t like Starks – I think it was as you said, about not place for a highborn lady.
#24 – I agree; I think Cersei is paranoid and this may lead to her downfall b/c her uncle was probably right on several items she’ll choose to ignore. Sounded like he knew who was Tommen’s father too.
#25 – Queen Margaret a lesbian? Maybe.
#26 – True!!!!!!!!!!
#27 – She’s an insensitive b!tch.

28) Jaime is feeling guilty for letting Tyrion get away. He feels responsible for his father's death. What do you think Cersei would do if he confessed?
I think she would freak and vow revenge. I don’t think she is so much upset over her father’s death as she is distraught over King Joffrey’s. If she is living vicariously through her children, then she must see Tommen as weaker than Joffrey, and must be pissed about that with regards to him being a reflection on her.
29) Do you think Varys is with Tyrion? Do you think he'll show his face at the castle again?
No. I don’t think they are together. Yes, Varys will show up again at Kingslanding.
30) Is it just me or is it a bit morbid the way they keep talking about Tywin's corpse smiling? Can we not go there? Ewww!
Really. Ugh. Stop already.
31) Sound like Jaime will believe what Tyrion said about Cersei sleeping around. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. He also seems to be catching on to the fact she only seeks him out when she needs something.
True. That is on his mind a bit, isn’t it? Yes, hopefully he will get a clearer picture of her.
32) What do you think of Cersei comparing herself to her father? Didn't she used to do this with Jaime?
I think you’re right!
33) Seems like the painting of the shield is a big deal. I'm not sure why. A tree with leaves and fallings stars. Wonder what it means?
Didn't she choose to pretty much copy the "gorgeously painted" castle door, which was a detailed forest scene with a "sly red fox, two sparrows, and a shadow of a boar" in the background? Seems like our Brienne has an eye for beauty.
34) Seems like Brienne is on the right track to finding Sansa and finding out what happened. She now knows a third person was probably involved in spiriting her away.
True. I wonder if she’ll figure it out by the end of the book?
35) Are you worried for Sansa? So far it doesn't seem like Littlefinger is making any more advances on her. He is sharing enough information that she could probably get him hanged for treason.
Very true; I’m surprised at that. It is still pretty creepy the way he thinks of her as his and Catelyn’s daughter. **Lisa Kay shivers – and not in a good way**
35) Who is the real man Petyr or Littlefinger?
Littlefinger. I loved her analogy about him “not lifting his little finger to help”. But maybe he’s bipolar. That would explain a lot.
36) Is there still hope for little Robert? What do you think of Sansa taking care of him? I'm wondering if he has epilepsy?
I don’t know if there is any hope, other than “only the meek shall survive”. Sansa seems very caring in her surrogate mother role to Sweetrobin, and I don’t blame her for not wanting to let him into her bed to nuzzle her breasts! Sure sounds like epilepsy to me; God only knows what GRRM has as the diagnosis.
37) What do you think of Asha's wish to rule? Not a big surprise, but can she pull it off? Do you think she and Cersei may be spun from the same cloth?
I don’t know. I’ve never been the crazy over her. I want to say she and Cersei are similar in that she is a bit power hungry with her wanting to claim the Seastone Chair. However, Cersei would never have spurred Tristifer’s “jonesing” for her that way – she would have used it to her own advantage. Kind of stupid, when she wants his support at her Queensmoot; but more honorable, in a way, than Cersei.
Question: Now, is Euron is '”Crow's Eye” and Asha’s uncle, brother to her father, Balon, right? Aeron Greyjoy (Damphair) is Euron’s younger brother; he supports Euron as king, right? But is he a full brother or half-brother? (I don’t think the appendix differentiates.) And does this make a difference?
38) Do you think Theon's truly dead? Sounded like he was a goner, but he's not the first person we've thought that of.
Nope. Though he might wish he were.
A little side note: I heard a rumor that the people making the TV show are going to change either Asha's or Osha's name because the two sound too similar. What do you think of that?
That’s kind of weird. There are many similar names in this book – and they drive me crazy – but those two sound different enough to me. In truth, I have always done a double take over Asha’s name because it is so much like Arya – to me anyways. It always takes me a split second to see the difference when I’m reading fast.

Didn't she choose to pretty much copy the "gorgeously painted" castle door, which was a detailed forest scene with a "sly red fox, two sparrows, and a shadow of a boar" in the background? Seems like our Brienne has an eye for beauty.
Lisa, I think they said she was copying a pattern she'd found years about upon a weapon she found at her castle. I actually had to reread to make sure they actually talked about what ended up on the shield.

Ha! I re-read it a couple of times and I'm still confused. **shrugs** Oh, well.

Not to worry; I haven't done my reading yet, Sandy.

I hope you feel better soon, Lisarenee! Drink plenty of fluids and get plenty of rest.

28) Jaime is feeling guilty for letting Tyrion get away. He feels responsible for his father's death. What do you think Cersei would do if he confessed?
Jaime had no idea that Tyrion was capable of murder (I certainly didn't think so!). He's not to blame. He was helping his brother, in a way he was atoning for Tysha. I think Cersei would slap Jaime if she knew. She would never speak to him again!
29) Do you think Varys is with Tyrion? Do you think he'll show his face at the castle again?
I don't think he is with Tyrion. It would be too dangerous to travel with Tyrion. Hard to disguise the fact that one is a scarred dwarf with mismatched eyes. I don't expect to see Varys show up at King's Landing. In a way, I hope he makes his way to Dany.
30) Is it just me or is it a bit morbid the way they
keep talking about Tywin's corpse smiling? Can we not go there? Ewww!
Yes, very morbid, as well as the smell. Poor Tommen!
31) Sound like Jaime will believe what Tyrion said about Cersei sleeping around. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. He also seems to be catching on to the fact she only seeks him out when she needs something.
Yes, their relationship has definitely turned a corner. I can see them warring against each other in the future.
32) What do you think of Cersei comparing herself to her father? Didn't she used to do this with Jaime?
She resents being born a woman. She is very ambitious, but it's a man's world.
33) Seems like the painting of the shield is a big deal. I'm not sure why. A tree with leaves and fallings stars. Wonder what it means?
Very interesting observation!
34) Seems like Brienne is on the right track to finding Sansa and finding out what happened. She now knows a third person was probably involved in spiriting her away.
The Eyrie is one of her options. Wonder if she'll make it there.
35) Are you worried for Sansa? So far it doesn't seem like Littlefinger is making any more advances on her. He is sharing enough information that she could probably get him hanged for treason.
I think he intends to keep her prisoner, for all intents and purposes. I am worried for her. She has no family to help her. She's on her own and under Littlefinger's control.
35) Who is the real man Petyr or Littlefinger?
That's a great question. I think that he is still traumatized by his childhood. He was never good enough for Cat and he was looked down upon by the Lords. He is getting revenge by wielding power and controlling some of the things that occur.
36) Is there still hope for little Robert? What do you think of Sansa taking care of him? I'm wondering if he has epilepsy?
Sounds like he does have epilepsy. He probably won't live too long, given his unhealthy condition.
37) What do you think of Asha's wish to rule? Not a big surprise, but can she pull it off? Do you think she and Cersei may be spun from the same cloth?
She seems to be a nicer person than Cersei, however, to be fair, we haven't really seen much of her. I think there is too much riding against her for her to pull it off.
38) Do you think Theon's truly dead? Sounded like he was a goner, but he's not the first person we've thought that of.
At this point, no, I think he's still alive somewhere.
A little side note: I heard a rumor that the people making the TV show are going to change either Asha's or Osha's name because the two sound too similar. What do you think of that?
I don't think it's a bad idea at all, especially given there are those who only watch the show and haven't read the books.

So, Jon switched them so that Melisandre would not
47. Any speculation on how Randyll Tarly will receive Sam, Gilly and the baby? I hope Brienne befriends them somehow.

This topic is open for discussion of [[book:A Feast for Crows|13497] by George R.R. Martin. Be prepared for SPOILERS.
Goodreads Synopsis:
Few books have captivated the imagination and won the devotion and praise of readers and critics everywhere as has George R. R. Martin’s monumental epic cycle of high fantasy. Now, in A Feast for Crows, Martin delivers the long-awaited fourth book of his landmark series, as a kingdom torn asunder finds itself at last on the brink of peace...only to be launched on an even more terrifying course of destruction.
A Feast for Crows
It seems too good to be true. After centuries of bitter strife and fatal treachery, the seven powers dividing the land have decimated one another into an uneasy truce. Or so it appears....With the death of the monstrous King Joffrey, Cersei is ruling as regent in King’s Landing. Robb Stark’s demise has broken the back of the Northern rebels, and his siblings are scattered throughout the kingdom like seeds on barren soil. Few legitimate claims to the once desperately sought Iron Throne still exist—or they are held in hands too weak or too distant to wield them effectively. The war, which raged out of control for so long, has burned itself out.
But as in the aftermath of any climactic struggle, it is not long before the survivors, outlaws, renegades, and carrion eaters start to gather, picking over the bones of the dead and fighting for the spoils of the soon-to-be dead. Now in the Seven Kingdoms, as the human crows assemble over a banquet of ashes, daring new plots and dangerous new alliances are formed, while surprising faces—some familiar, others only just appearing—are seen emerging from an ominous twilight of past struggles and chaos to take up the challenges ahead.
It is a time when the wise and the ambitious, the deceitful and the strong will acquire the skills, the power, and the magic to survive the stark and terrible times that lie before them. It is a time for nobles and commoners, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and sages to come together and stake their fortunes...and their lives. For at a feast for crows, many are the guests—but only a few are the survivors.
Here are the chapter divisions so we can all stay in sync:
