What is Mod status? Is that like being groovy?

message 52: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) Welcome Gaeta. :)

message 53: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Welcome Gaeta!

I am pretty nwe myself......

Barry, what does being a moderator allow one to do. I feel I had better ask since I am one and have never been one before!

message 54: by Linda (new)

Linda (imisslinda2000) I look forward to being apart of the group. Am compiling my list. (How do I "link" the titles so that people can click on them and see the book/description?). I still read only print, old fashioned i know, but I buy my books for a buck at the local Friends of the Library sales. I also volunteer there so I can get first dibs by having access to the inner sanctum of donated books. I have 47 books for far on my list...just need time to upload.

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 1309 comments Linda, click on the "add book/author" right above the box where you type, and you can do a search and add right from there. It automatically puts the link at the bottom of the page, so if you're cutting/pasting from another document, you'll have to copy/paste the link each time.

message 56: by Sue (new)

Sue Welcome Gaeta and Linda. There are going to be so many book ideas and so much fun.

message 57: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi. I've been working on reading a book by an author from each country (plus some territories, semi-autonomous anarcho-syndicalist collectives, etc.) since summer 2008, so I know some of you from other world literature groups.

I have 41 books to go, and I might read some for countries I've already covered if I can find something better. For example, I'm not happy with my choices for Comoros (which I've read) and Oman (which I haven't).

My rule is that the author must have lived in the country for two years or more, unless nothing I can find meets that criterion.

My tracking blog lists what I've read and what I still need to read (incidentally providing a reading for every country). It's at http://shoshana-world.livejournal.com/

message 58: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) Wow, Very Impressive.

message 59: by Sue (new)

Sue Cool project. I'm thinking I probably will want to keep track of what I read longer term, not that I expect to be anywhere as complete as you.

message 60: by [deleted user] (last edited Sep 03, 2011 07:49PM) (new)

Anne and Sue: More, I get bored easily so I have to create ways to entertain myself over time. 52 books for 4 years pretty much covers the world!

Barry: Sure! If I get a chance, I'll find the original and see if I can crop it to get rid of the stuff on either side.

Gaeta1: Well, 2 years gets you books by Peace Corps volunteers. I didn't know many of the countries when I started, and my knowledge has improved as I've read. Sometimes what I read for a country makes me change my selection for another because I want to understand something historical or social from another perspective. I recently wowed my partner by comparing and contrasting Vanuatu and Tuvalu. And I've become much better at crossword puzzles.

message 61: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes, that looks good. Thanks!

I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone's reading.

message 62: by [deleted user] (new)

Whereabouts?

message 63: by [deleted user] (new)

Ah, yes. The Princess Grace/James Bond discussion.

message 64: by [deleted user] (new)

So how do I open a folder? Or: Would someone please open a Cambodia folder? Thanks.

message 65: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks, Barry.

message 66: by Ally (new)

Ally McCulloch (allymcculloch) I am reading 5 books right now, but am concentrating on Paul Auster's Leviathan. I am going on a 7 day movie binge and it ends on Thursday. So perhaps I'll start reading the book again on Friday. Cinema is my main love, but I'm reading Auster in order to get me in the habit of reading again, because I'm in grad school now and I need to.

message 67: by [deleted user] (new)

What are you studying?

message 68: by Ally (new)

Ally McCulloch (allymcculloch) I got my reading list already! Thanks Barry! Thanks grad school! Thanks Asmah!

message 69: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) Great work, Allison. I'm still working on mine.

message 70: by [deleted user] (new)

If you update/edit an entry that already exists (like, add a link to a book you listed in a post several days ago), it doesn't register as new activity. The last new post in your personal thread was on the 10th.

message 71: by [deleted user] (new)

To be sure I'm being clear, if the post itself isn't new, GR doesn't give it a new date.

message 72: by [deleted user] (new)

Despite claims to the contrary, most website and software processes billed as "intuitive" aren't! :)

Tanya (tanya_) | 229 comments Hi all, I stumbled across this group and have joined. I love the idea of having some structure to my reading as I've just been wallowing in fluff reads lately (and putting the list together will give me yet another reason to avoid real work for the next couple of hours ...)

message 74: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) Welcome Tanya. It's been exciting just researching the books.

So true....compiling the list really is fun and then , of course, it has to be modified....

message 76: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) And modified and modified. Lots of time until Jan. 1. Will be fun to see your list....Welcome.

Muphyn Chelsea wrote: "Hey, Muphyn!!! Just learned from a reliable source that you've joined us. Hooray! A very big, warm welcome to you!!"

Hey Chelsea, yep *laugh* - the reliable source wouldn't be Daisy or the updates feed, would it? ;) Haven't really checked anything out but the idea to read books from around the world is fantastic!! And so easily done given that I already read tons of books from/about other countries.

Are there any rules, e.g. book must be written by an author from that country or just take place in said country?

message 79: by Muphyn (new)

Muphyn Haha, yeah, I got the feeling that people happily vocal (which is great!). Awesome to be setting my own rules, ideas are starting to pop into my head (both in terms of rules but also in terms of books to read). :D Yay! :D

message 80: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) Hi Muphyn, nice to meet you. I know that Barry, who started this group (three cheers for Barry!), his rule is only new authors. But, I am not going by that rule. Most of the authors will be new for me, but not all. Have a good time making your list.

message 81: by Muphyn (new)

Muphyn Great, thanks Anne! I think I've got plenty of books/authors on my TBR-shelf that I should be fine just reading authors I haven't read - I'll see how I go (can't wait to start my list but should really be doing some work now! Friday morning in Oz...)

message 82: by [deleted user] (last edited Sep 22, 2011 06:19PM) (new)

Hi Murphyn. I already started because I have an earlier deadline for my last 39 books of the world. After that I'll see if I hit another 13!

message 83: by Muphyn (new)

Muphyn That is so cool that you can totally make up your own rules (except for the linking part, which I wholly support as it drives me nuts when people don't do and you have to do all that c&p work...). Thanks for the warm welcome, feel comfy here already :)

message 84: by Muphyn (new)

Muphyn Thanks, Judy! And idea is exactly my plan of attack! :)

message 85: by Marieke (new)

Marieke | 209 comments Hello...there are a lot of familiar faces and friends here!

This is going to be FUN.

and possibly overwhelming.

message 86: by Muphyn (new)

Muphyn I wouldn't say "possibly overwhelming" but "very definitely overwhelming"! :D

message 87: by Marieke (new)

Marieke | 209 comments yes, but so exciting it's making me drool.

is the idea to read a book a week (on average), each from or about a different country?

message 88: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) Welcome Marieke. I was wondering if you would dare to join us - yet another group. Nice to see you here.

as long as i don't have to moderate or organize anything beyond myself, i think i'll be very happy here. 8)

and i'm thinking it will be a good way to bring some of my other groups' reading together...and get some other perspectives on books from people who maybe aren't in those groups.

I'm sure you can easily make a list out of all the books you would be reading next year anyway. And, yes, it's a great group. There's overlap in books and interests, but everyone also has some individual tastes. So it's always fun and interesting to see everyone's list.
Looking forward to seeing yours. :)

message 91: by Marieke (new)

Marieke | 209 comments it will be fun to make and re-make a list. and fun to watch everyone else's...but that will be overwhelming too...to keep up with what everyone is doing/thinking/reporting. :D

(i mean overwhelming in the best sense of the word.)

It is overwhelming in only the very best sense of the word. D)

A lot of us keep refining or adding to our lists. My list is ridiculous with 5 options for several countries. But, hey, I like to have options and whose to say I won't read some of those books before Jan. 1, 2012?

H

Marieke | 209 comments Chelsea wrote: "Hey...Marieke!!! So very glad to welcome you here and just want to know what the heck took you so long?!!! 8)"

well, in case you hadn't noticed, i am chronologically-challenged. :D

Daisy sent me an invite, but i kept forgetting to follow-up and i have no idea how many days it has been. :(

that is my excuse and i'm sticking to it. lol.

aww. that stinks when that happens, Chrissie!

Judy, i had a big old cat named Harrison until May this year. he also loved tuna. we used to taunt him with "tooooon-naaaa." he used to try to swipe tuna sandwiches off my plate and the only time he ever tried to get on top of the turtle's aquarium was when i gave the turtle some tuna. tuna, more than catnip, is a kitty drug. i swear! :D
