Judy, It'll be fun to compare lists. My friend Sue has also joined. You can borrow ideas from us if you run out of ideas; and vice versa.
peek away. I've been working on it all afternoon. I have some gaps and some choices to make. I love making this list.
I like your phrase, Barry, If it's in your head, it should be in a post below! Makes me laugh. Thank you.
I'm working on my list - some of you seem to be picking country as setting, but the author isn't necessarily from there. Is it okay if I do the opposite?
Jenny wrote: "I'm working on my list - some of you seem to be picking country as setting, but the author isn't necessarily from there. Is it okay if I do the opposite?"Barry's description says, "adjust the rules how you see fit". I'm actually choosing authors by nationality and forfeiting some good books by setting aside, for now, authors of no or hyphenated nationality.
I'm going by setting mostly. But who knows? I may change my mind. When I first saw the title of the group I figured the setting was most important.
I've completed my list but I will be editing more along the way. I'm not sure all books are available in my library network and I'm not going to buy them all (!!). I found many ideas in the reading around the world group---funny how many were already on one of my lists.I probably will leave extras on as reminders for the future too (2013!)
Sue wrote: "I've completed my list but I will be editing more along the way. I'm not sure all books are available in my library network and I'm not going to buy them all (!!). I found many ideas in the reading..."I'm not buying any! Yay libraries.
Judy wrote: "I probably will leave extras on as reminders for the future too (2013!)Sue, you and I are on the same wavelength. I've been thinking about what I'm going to read in 2013, too."
I'm chuckling aloud as I read your note. I'm becoming incorrigible but happily I'm not alone!
Hi Sue, Judy and Anne. I have been working on a list. I have 52 countries now, but I have the books sorted into the country where most of the action takes place. Maybe tomorrow I can get them listed here at the group. All I know for sure is that I will be making changes. How you guys can plan for 2013 is beyond me. I am just guessing for 2012.Is it correct we cannot start reading now? I am reading such a good memoir that takes place in Cuba: Blessed by Thunder: Memoir of a Cuban Girlhood.
don't take my mention of 2013 too literally. Of course I thought I'd have completed Brothers Karamazov by now (placed it on hold in Feb I think, not because I disliked it but because I had so much else to read). I'm just saying I don't want to lose track of books I decide not to read next year in case something like this happens in 2013. I may be crazy but....
Judy wrote: "Barry, could we have our personal reading lists put together into a separate folder? It would make them easier to locate as well as make it more organized. D) "I echo this sentiment.
An FYI for readers, just was at Amazon and they have 100 Kindle books for $3.99 or less til 9/30. Among them I saw Agaat and The Lemon Tree (in case anyone is planning to read either of these and has a kindle.)
Sue wrote: "An FYI for readers, just was at Amazon and they have 100 Kindle books for $3.99 or less til 9/30. Among them I saw Agaat and The Lemon Tree (in case anyone is planning..."Thank you, Sue. I was planning to read Agaat so I will purchase it now. I've already read The Lemon Tree - 5 stars!
Sue, I have read Lemeon Tree and it is excellent. I mean super!!!!Unfortunately Kindle books are priced differently depending on where you are located.....
Agaat sounds is a book I have looked at numerous times. Thank for the tip Sue! Maybe my price will be cheap too. Very helpful when you give the link to the books.
Sue, for me Agaat is not even available on Kindle. I HATE how Kindle differentiates between different countries! Such is life. I checked. Still, if you run across books in "strange countries" please link to the given book. I can always check. I have to add some more books to my list, unless i split countries. I think putting Alaskan books with Westerns and Southern books feels very strange! The traditions and cultures are so disparate.
Sue wrote: "An FYI for readers, just was at Amazon and they have 100 Kindle books for $3.99 or less til 9/30. Among them I saw Agaat and The Lemon Tree (in case anyone is planning..."Sue, thanks again for telling me about the kindle sale. It's impossible to find online. Too bad.
Sorry guys. Amazon doesn't indicate that it's offers are just for U.S. when it presents them but I guess I have to assume that. Do you have the daily kindle review and the Kindle daily deal as we do?
Sue wrote: "Do you have the daily kindle review and the Kindle daily deal as we do?"I don't even have those. How do you sign up for those?
I'm not sure where I found it but it may have been on the Kindle home page. The daily deal has to be checked every day so you have to bookmark it. This sale I found today at the site when looking for the daily deal. The monthly deal is new, just starting this month. It seems to correlate to the 100 mp3 albums available every month for $5. I've been checking that too and now I get automatically notified. It may well be that once you start checking you'll start getting some notices too.I'll see if I can figure out how to do a link to the review but I'm not good at doing that.
Anne wrote: "Sue wrote: "An FYI for readers, just was at Amazon and they have 100 Kindle books for $3.99 or less til 9/30. Among them I saw Agaat and The Lemon Tree (in case anyone..."Anne--do you mean you weren't able to find the sale I mentioned. If not maybe I can email a link to you.
Sue, I found Agaat, but not the 100 books for $3.99 or less.I will go look for the daily and monthly deals.
that's so strange Anne. I can't find it right now either. I'll keep looking; guess I should have bookmarked it.
Hi everyone and thank you to Anne for the invite. I must be addicted with yet another challenge. I see I'm in good company *waves at Chrissy and Judy*. Hopefully I can work some of my other challenges and TBR into this challenge. One of my rules will have to be that my list is not carved in stone and that it can be changed as we travel along.
Sue wrote: "that's so strange Anne. I can't find it right now either. I'll keep looking; guess I should have bookmarked it."I can't find it either. Don't worry about searching for it.
Janice wrote: "Hi everyone and thank you to Anne for the invite. I must be addicted with yet another challenge. I see I'm in good company *waves at Chrissy and Judy*. I found it!! "100 Kindle Books for $3.99 or Less"Looks like it will be a new monthly feature.
Sorry--I tried twice to get a link to come through but it didn't work.
Judy, The Lemon Tree is one of the best books I read this year. I'm very interested in the topic, so that's part of it. But it is extremely well done and I am still feel moved when I think about different people in this book.
Sue wrote: "I found it!! "100 Kindle Books for $3.99 or Less"Looks like it will be a new monthly feature.

Oh, well. I bet you can't explain how you found it.
Anne wrote: "Sue wrote: "I found it!! "100 Kindle Books for $3.99 or Less"Looks like it will be a new monthly feature.

Oh, well. I..."
I did something along the lines of what Jenny said and found a link. I had been looking for "100 deals for $3.99 or less" but that didn't trigger the right page.
Judy wrote: "Welcome, Janice. Glad you joined us. D)The Lemon Tree: An Arab, a Jew, and the Heart of the Middle East looks excellent. I'm looking at three lifetimes to read all the books I want ..."
I really liked this book (5 stars from me), very informative and very moving while also well written. There were also a couple of other African related books there too.
Jenny wrote: "One solution is to follow the Kindle Post US blog, which would link you to deals when they come up."Jenny, that blog link led me straight to the sale. Thank you.
Hear that Sue?
Sue, click on jenny's link and then scroll down the page past a few book reviews. You'll find it there.
I have the Daily Kindle Offer, but no Monthly Kindle offer....... I got an email and bookmarked it. However my deals are different from Americans.Finding stuff of Amazon is quite a challenge. If I find somethink I like I bookmark it. Because I have learned I never find it again otherwise.
If we find good offers lets tell each other by linking to the book at GR, then we can each go to amazon and see what price it is available for each individual. It will vary!
Sue wrote: "Loud and clear. How does one subscribe? It says I can bit I don't see a link."
At the very top, embedded in the banner image, is an RSS link. YOu can add it to your Google reader if you have one set up.
Sue wrote: "Oh OK. I was looking for a straight subscribe link. I always forget to check the Google reader."Okay, what's a google reader?
Google Reader is an RSS reader, where you can subscribe to various feeds and organize them into folders. It displays the new posts. I follow a bunch of baking blogs, reading blogs, and fun things. If you have a Goole docs or Gmail account, just go to reader.google.com and it will help you get started.
I'm afraid I don't have the time or inclination right now to be a moderator Barry. I'll follow Anne's lead in opting out.
Barry, I opt out too! I am NOT the moderator type. I think you better ask people before you choose them as moderators........

When I lived in NYC I lived in a 5th floor walk up. I remember very well what that was like. Glad you figured out something al lot easier.
