Betty I belong to a world lit group that stays with one or countries for an entire year. I indeed like this idea of 52 and 80 countries, too. I find a lot of these books from exploring library shelves, organized by the library of congress system--the fiction is grouped by country.
The World Literature group has seventy-seven members though often one or two people talk about a book. I'd like more discussion there but accept the way it is http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/3...

Ally McCulloch (allymcculloch) Does that mean we'll have to delete this group? :(

Honestly I'd like to focus on World Cinema, because I'm doing pretty dang good. http://mubi.com/lists/discovering-wor...

However, I might take a stab at this World Literature project. Especially since I know of a Somalian writer (Nurrudin Farah) so why not?

message 3: by Betty (new)

Betty Impressive map and list of World Cinema, Ally. It's the first one I've seen like it. I'm more into the reading habit, even the play's script before the stage play. A book and an optional film from that country is possible.
I'm going to choose one of Nuruddin Farah's books for my 52 books.

Anne (reachannereach) I think the title of this thread should be changed. There is no cooler group than this one.

I see.

The mark of the super cool is to be so open.

Anne (reachannereach) I'm doing this challenge.

message 9: by Daisy (new)

Daisy | 182 comments Me too.

message 10: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) I know. :)

Cool beans...another excellent reason to browse Jenny's master list.

message 12: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) Ha ha. Now Asmah is "saying" "cool beans." I love it.

message 13: by Marieke (new)

Marieke | 209 comments I like this group! Also, I really like Asmah's world lit group but I can't always get to the books on time. And like Asmah, I wish more people would chime in. So um, howzabout some of y'all join us there?

message 14: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) Why don't we find a book that a lot of people from 52 are reading and we'll read it in World Lit. I don't know what Asmah has planned, but are there any good candidates?

I think she is planning for Asia in 2012...it will be fun. 2011 was brazil and Peru and I plan to get to all the books she picked at some point...

I joined when she was wrapping up Greece at the end of 2010.

Oops. I know "Asmah" is a pseudonym yet I just used the female personal pronoun. Apologies, Asmah if that's wrong. :S

message 16: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) I just joined, but I didn't see any books set up for next year.

Marieke | 209 comments Anne wrote: "I just joined, but I didn't see any books set up for next year."

She mentioned her idea somewhere but I can't remember where...I'm pretty sure it will be Asia.

I'm not sure which group you're referring to (too many groups and I'm getting confused) but the idea of finding books common to more than one group sounds great to me.

message 19: by Marieke (new)

Marieke | 209 comments Ha! Barry, you are too awesome.

message 20: by Sue (new)

Sue If next year's area for Asmah's group is Asia I may well join. I already have several countries and books identified from the area.

Me too.

message 22: by Sue (new)

Sue Ah 2012 will be quite a year.

message 23: by Betty (new)

Betty Hey dude! I have been basking in the shimmering blue Aegean, kind of having read Greek novels and epics and now having to experience all those stories. Wish you were here! Love you all.

Anne (reachannereach) Asmah wrote: "Hey dude! I have been basking in the shimmering blue Aegean, kind of having read Greek novels and epics and now having to experience all those stories. Wish you were here! Love you all."

Yeah, nice to hear from you. I'm basking in 40 degree weather. Jealous?

message 25: by Anne (last edited Oct 17, 2011 01:01PM) (new)

Anne (reachannereach) Basking in the rain. I'll bet Asmah can't say that.

message 26: by Marieke (new)

Marieke | 209 comments haha! Asmah's "postcard" just cracked me up on a rather lousy day.

message 27: by Sue (new)

Sue At least it was 60s and sunny here though not quite warm enough for basking.

message 28: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) 60s would be good.

message 29: by Sue (new)

Sue Well drop on by, but not til Friday now. Gonna rain tomorrow and not sure if it's gonna clear out completely on Thursday.

message 30: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) Okay. I'll be knocking on your door on Friday.

message 31: by Sue (new)

Sue There's a nice cafe just a very short walk down the street too.

message 32: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) Perfect.

message 33: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) Judy wrote: "Did you say food? D)))"

No, but Cafes usually have food (good baked things, I'm hoping). Want to join us?

message 34: by Sue (new)

Sue They do breakfast and lunch, pastry, etc. Come one come all --- though all of Goodreads would definitely not fit.

message 35: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) We'll sit outside in the sun.

message 36: by Sue (new)

Sue :-)

message 37: by Sue (new)

Sue Well it's going to be 70 this afternoon now the sun has come out. Tomorrow in the 60s.

message 38: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) Sounds good. With windchill we are in the low 40s.

message 39: by Sue (new)

Sue Absolutely!

message 40: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) That challenge sounds interesing, Barry. I'm happy to stay here, though.

message 41: by Sue (new)

Sue me too!

message 42: by Betty (new)

Betty The delayed 2013 US option I also considered, yet undecided whether to do it because the 52 different countries of the 2012 challenge probably make up only twenty-five per cent of all the world's countries.
The 2012 Around the World list signifies one of my daunting challenges.

So, maybe in 5 years you can do the 52 U.S. states.

message 44: by Betty (new)

Betty Anne wrote: "So, maybe in 5 years you can do the 52 U.S. states. ..."

Or, write one set there--an even more daunting challenge.

Heck, yeah. Didn't know you had writing aspirations.

message 46: by Mikki (new)

Mikki They must be choosing stories by setting, no?

message 47: by Betty (new)

Betty Anne, finding so many disciplined, full-time writers here does influence others.

Judy, the memoir "Tolstoy and the Purple Chair" reminds me of Ex Libris: Confessions of a Common Reader, which The Imprinted Life read. There is deep satisfaction in noticing the juxtaposition of the regal "Purple Chair" and the writer Tolstoy.

message 48: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) Asmah wrote: "Anne, finding so many disciplined, full-time writers here does influence others.

Yes, I imagine it could. Good luck with it.

message 49: by Mikki (new)

Mikki Judy, I might read it with you. Let me know when and I'll order it.

message 50: by Mikki (new)

Mikki Impressive! I have [Book: Family Happiness and Other Stories] sitting here, so, I could read that for prep work...
