I agree that the book was fantastic and much better than the movie, but I honestly didn't think the movie was terrible. Especially when compared to most of the crap Hollywood's put out in the last 10 years.

I enjoyed ONE DAY. I love getting to know characters over pivotal time periods in their lives. My book, HENNY ON THE COUCH is about an artist told over three time periods: her childhood with an eccentric mother, the college love affair with Oliver in NYC's 1980's Art Scene, and current day Manhattan.
Let me know what you think!
My problem is that I thought the book was very manipulative. She's a decent girl and he's a jerk and it goes on forever and ever. And then readers get a tragic payoff.
I purposely saw the movie first because I'm teaching myself how to adapt a novel to screenplay and I thought it would be a good exercise. I was shocked by the surprise. I think I might have felt manipulated had I read the book first. I really enjoyed the Emma character.

I loved this book and the dramatic jolt - no, I'm not going to spoil it - was quite astonishing. I do not recall anything quite so electrifying (not too strong a word, I hope)- in any book for a very long time.
Joyce wrote: "My problem is that I thought the book was very manipulative. She's a decent girl and he's a jerk and it goes on forever and ever. And then readers get a tragic payoff."I think the ending was a bit Hardy-esque. The author himself mentions Hardy as one of his influences. I didn't think the book was manipulative at all. It was definitely plausible and stuff like the ending happens all the time. Life doesn't always give us neat HEAs even if we're great people and I guess that was one of the messages of the book.
As for the movie, I enjoyed it. I read the book beforehand and thought it was better compared to the book. However, on its own, I don't think the movie was bad.
Just finished it. The book was ok, but not the best book i've ever read. The movie was pretty dull really. I wasn't too fond of the characters but i did like the book well enough. I too thought it dragged on a bit too long after the "major event".

I had not thought of the Hardy connection - that makes sense. But I still found it disappointing. I took the book on vacation as a beach read and I just didn't like the male lead character.
I read it like about a year ago, and I never regret of bought this book. I even covered the book with plastic cover, which means my affection towards books that I really love. The movie is somewhat half-baked, some essential parts haven't been explored, but Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess suit the role. IMHO.
Really loves the way of david nicholls described their characters on this story. And so touched by Emma and Dexter relatioship, although the ending is out of expectation. But still, this is a recommended book you must have!
I read it, the movie was better to me. I thought the book started off good but it lacked consistency.
You must!! read this its brilliant chick-lit. so much more insight than the film but for once the film actually does it some justice. i loved both. enjoy!
Sandy wrote: "Hi has any one read this ? I have been tempted and now even more so as they have brought a film version out x"Yes. I preferred the film. In fact if you read it first you will probably enjoy the film more.
I felt closer to the characters in the film. It started quite slowly though.
I read this book. It was a slow paced book for me yet the story is really good. The movie adaptation did not really give justice to the book. Read it and enjoy it.....
This is a romance book, only popular because it was written by a man. Had he stayed with the original premise of writing about one day a year, it may have been special. But about half way through, he flashes forward and back and loses the whole one day a year thing altogether. There are many women romance writers who do MUCH better than this.

I read it a few months ago. Just AMAZING. Such an emotional book, I cried at the end. Haven't seen the movie yet.
It was an amazing book. Very well written. The story involves a relationship of three stages in life. About a man, who didn't realise and value the woman he actually had
It's a great read - avoid the film at least until you've read the book. It made me cry and I don't do that much with books.
Sorry for my English, I' m from Italy. I read it in 2011, and I really loved it. I didn't want to watch the movie, because Emma can have brown hairs! Not like the actress, who acted her. When they finally go on holiday together, he looks at her skin turn red while sunbathing on the ship, and when they are on a Corfù beach. A beautiful part, peraphs my favourite. However it looks like the classic Nineteenth love history, but with a lot of the second Millennium obstacles. I think everyone should read this novel, because speaks us about a clean, true and strong love, in a time where everything is commodified.
I loved this book and when I heard they were making a movie of it,. I feared it would be awful and stayed away. Judging from the comments above, I guess I was right.
I thought the book was fantastic. The characterisation was superb - even though Dex was a complete prat for much of the time, he was uttely compelling. I had no idea what was going to happen at the end, either, so it was a massive shock that stayed with me for days afterwards.I haven't seen the film and don't want to. It's so rare for a film adaptation to be as good as the original book that I decided to steer clear.
As to whether you should read it... it really depends on what you're looking for in a novel. This isn't "high art", but it's incredibly engaging, funny and painful by turns. The situations feel very plausible and the characters feel very real.
I really liked this book. I had no idea it was made into a movie. Does the movie have the same title? Who is in it? When was it released? I would like to see the movie now that I have read the book.

The movie starred Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess and came out summer of last year. And yes, it was called One Day, too. The screenplay was written by the author.
Yes I did. They should not make movies based on a story in a book. It ruin all the precious imaginations in the readers mind.
it is definitely worth reading...
though somehow in the middle you'll be little frustrated as the plot is going nowhere, but i would suggest you to hold on a little and absorb the characters a little more....trust me it'll be one of the amazing books you've read then...

I realise I'm in the minority here, but I wasn't that keen on this book. As soon as I heard about the book's concept I thought I was going to love it. But I was disappointed. I'm still not 100% sure why. I think it had something to do with the fact that I couldn't fully engage with the characters or their relationship. I wanted to feel for the both of them, and it just didn't happen.
I completely agree with Ruth, so many people were raving about this book but I couldnt see the what the fuss was about.
Immensely enjoyable book, exceptionally readable but not trashily written. A great book. The film's not too bad really, but only worth watching if you've already read the book and just want another fix of it, so to speak
