Hmm...we should go on a search for cover trends! I think the only holding hands cover I can recall reading is Something Like Fate by Susane Colasanti . Though I believe this one has been repeated several times too: Sing Me to Sleep by Angela Morrison

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments I've read all of these within the past few weeks.

Epic Fail by Claire LaZebnik Between the Lines (Between the Lines, #1) by Tammara Webber Where You Are (Between the Lines, #2) by Tammara Webber Thoughtless by S.C. Stephens

I also remember seeing this one :

There You'll Find Me by Jenny B. Jones

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments Or a raccoon. There was a scene in (I think?) Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls where Billy put shiny tin in a hole in the ground with nails sticking around the edge of the opening. I guess the point was that the raccoon could fit its hand into the hole to pick up the tin, but once it made a fist, couldn't pull the hand (paw?) back out. Supposedly, the lure of the tin was enough to keep the critter trapped.

message 209: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Yep, that was in that book. Where the Red Fern Grows is one of my childhood favorites. I've read it hundreds of times too.

And it's true. My Grandpa grew up in Tennessee and he said that Racoons would find anything silver and would coat their burrows in them.

message 211: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I still bawl my eyes out when I read it at 32, I should be sheepish about that but I'm not, LOL! That book is friggin sad!

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments I hated the movie version. It was so far off from the book. There was actually a b-movie version made a few years back starring Dave Matthews (I know...him as an actor seems odd) and I caught it on the Netflix queue. It wasn't the greatest movie I'd seen, but followed the book story much better than the original movie.

message 213: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I've never watched either movie, though I did hear about the Dave Matthews one. He played the dad, I think.

Loved that book. I read it when I was younger and cried my eyes out.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments I was not a fan of the book Ruined, but I do love this author's book covers. Although, I do think they could have left the girl off the cover of Dark Souls and it would have looked even better. When I got Ruined from the library, I remember staring at the cover for a while. The picture doesn't do it justice. It has a lot of wonderful shades of moss green and purple.

(wonder if this one is any good...)

message 216: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (narcisse) | 1946 comments I also like these covers because the titles look like they're part of a wrought iron gate and that makes it part enchanting and part creeptastic. It makes me want to hang out in the French Quarter or ride in a horse-drawn buggy or go on a haunted tour or something.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments Ruined took place in New Orleans. I wonder if someone native to the area such as yourself would like the book more than I did. I sort of felt a disconnect with everything that was going on, but I will say that it had to do more with the plot (and I really hated the "new girl hooks the popular guy" spin for this particular story) than the actual setting. However, I did wonder for a moment that if I had a familiarity with the setting, there's a chance I might have found myself more invested?

Either that, or it could go the other way and you'd hate the book because the author didn't get it right!

message 218: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (narcisse) | 1946 comments There aren't very many people who get it right. And most of the ones who do are chefs writing cookbooks.

why did she put such good books behind such stupid covers?

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments All of Mead's series have crappy covers for the most part. There are only a few books total out of all of her books that look alright. You'd think by now she'd be famous enough to get some decent covers. Her publishers need to hook her up.

In fact, check out page 1 of this topic near the bottom. We had a little bit of a bitch fest about it. :)

Jenny (narcisse) | 1946 comments Penguin has a lot of meh or ugly covers, I've noticed. Maybe their marketing team needs to be smacked around a bit. Or maybe they need to hire some people away from HarperCollins.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 5137 comments Who knows. I don't mind the newest Bloodlines cover design, but Sydney always looks constipated. I know you have no idea who I'm talking about since Sydney doesn't show up until book 4 of VA, but yeah. I think Meg/Bunny said she had lizard face or something, heh.

I read "Warm Bodies" a few months back. It was such a good book. A zombie book but not your typical zombie book. It actually made me feel FOR the walking dead. I love when the cover and book are both awesome together.

Same here. I had no idea there were going to be more. It just seemed like it'd make a good trilogy judging from the covers and titles. I haven't read this series, yet, though.

Ami E. Bowen (skayda) | 13 comments Something else I noticed; Different book series where their covers all resemble each other. Like the books from Lauren Kate's "Fallen" series remind me more than a little bit of Sophia Sharp's "Dream Realms" books. I included them here to compare, etc. I really liked the first two "Fallen" covers but not the third. The placement of the color. The sky/clouds behind the girl is all wrong, especially when combined with the first two covers.

Dream Realms Trilogy (First Two)

"Fallen" Books (First Three)

Except for "Destined" and "Passion" it looks like they're all wearing the same dress! Or, if not, very similar dresses with the layered ruffled skirt and all. lol.

D.G. These are two covers with the same picture...they are just cropped differently:
Midnight Sins (Heroes and Heartbreakers, #1) by Lora Leigh Tangle of Need (Psy-Changeling, #11) by Nalini Singh .

The funny thing is that I get the impression that I saw a third cover with the same dude.

You would think that Nalini Singh is doing well enough that they wouldn't have to use stock art for her covers?

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 76 comments I've grown really weary of the "girl standing in elegant fancy dress somewhere in nature" covers. They are all starting to look the same to me.

message 241: by Slmstanley (new)

Slmstanley | 4 comments Cassi, yeah, those are starting to blend together...but I save my ire for the dreadful covers that are whitewashed, and those that present young women with their faces cropped (or worse), so that the reader doesn't even see them as a whole person, but as a pair of breasts. :(

The re-issue of Cindy Pon's book Silver Phoenix (Kingdom of Xia, #1) by Cindy Pon is suffering from that - the original cover showed a young Asian woman in a position which reads as powerful. The reissue apparently has a pair of breasts belonging to a *white girl*. WTF?

The sequel to Silver Phoenix suffers from it, as well Fury of the Phoenix (Kingdom of Xia, #2) by Cindy Pon . Makes me crazy.

And I had one cover come across my desk in a distributor email which just...I don't care how good the story is, I'm not putting that book in our order queue. Don't Expect Magic by Kathy McCullough

Don't Expect Magic's cover completely dehumanizes the young woman on the cover and relegates her to an 'upskirt' shot. This is a friggin' YA book! I swear, I had a 'flames, on the side of my face' response to it.

I laughed because we actually had this conversation earlier in the topic. Those types of books are beautiful, but really do start to blend together.

Slmstanley, I was in the bookstore today and saw the cover for Don't Expect Magic. For some reason, I thought it was absolutely adorable. The quirky stockings make it seem less trashy/more covered up to me.

Authors like Richelle Mead and Kelley Armstrong, who have sold millions of books still get stuck with crappy stock covers too, while new and upcoming authors get some of the best covers. It's so backward to me! I know that publishing companies might want to put their best foot forward with new authors, but at the same time...respect the ones who are making you the money too, right?

Similar stock covers are so common that GR has listopia lists for lookalikes.

I have both of these books, hah.
Dark Territory (The Tracks, #1) by J. Gabriel Gates Obsidian (Lux, #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 76 comments I guess it's obvious I didn't read the whole topic. The Torment, etc pics reminded me of my growing distaste.

They seem to just recycle the same YA covers over and over again which is just...ugh.

Like the covers as a concept because they're beautiful, but I hate that they're overdone, if that makes sense.
