I agree, Liz has come up with some really interesting and much more literary tasks. I find myself reading with another set of parameters running in the background.
If anybody needs a suggestion for 10.3, The Map of Time has over 500 pages and is translated so some good points to be had! I've heard it's good so we'll see.

I loved the idea of learning more about narrative voice/point of view. And while wiki has some decent lists, I did not want to limit the tasks to those lists. Somehow I didn't realize that this would put the burden on the moderators to learn & understand the differences (thank you Elizabeth (Alaska)!).
Given what Columbus began and what his voyage to the American hemisphere began, I am looking for books that fit both 10.9 and 10.4. First of all, does anyone have any recommendations? Second, what percentage of the book has to be about the late 1400s? I am finding some interesting books that start there but span to the present day, and I want to be sure they fit 10.9 before I move them to the top of my list.
Denae, are you looking for a books that fit both tasks, or two books, one for 10.9 and another for 10.4?
I am looking for a book that fits both tasks.
Two I have found so far and am considering are Eating Fire, Tasting Blood: An Anthology of the American Inidian Holocaust and Genocide of the Mind: New Native American Writing, but I neither fits quite as closely as I would like.
I think those books address what came about after settlers arrived in North America, so would be a century and more later than the 10.9 task requires.
Hence my question regarding the required percentage? I am looking through the massive list of indigenous authors, but was both trying to save time and find out if the book had to be exclusively about the 15th century section, half about that, or what.
I'm not familiar with the writing of the South American authors in any way. But as I was looking through the list, I was focusing on them as thinking they were more likely to be writing of this time period than North Americans.
It isn't hard to find books on the topic, but they're more likely to be by authors of European descent, strangely enough. It's OK, I'll keep looking. Fortunately, 10.9 can easily be fulfilled without celebrating Columbus or any of the other people who came here from Europe.
I am going to give Kate a chance to answer the questions regarding 10.9 before butting in. I have moved them to a separate thread.

I started listening to Snowdrops yesterday. I didn't realize it before, but it is written in the form of a letter addressed to someone, relating the story. It seems like it would count for both 20.2 and 20.4. Can someone confirm that? I want to be sure I'm not barking up the wrong tree here, for planning purposes. :)

From what I can tell, this does not have enough 2nd person narrative to qualify for 20.2.
Okay, this is just driving me crazy! I hate it that I still don't have my own computer functional. Between my work laptop and my smartphone I can keep pretty wrll keep up with everthing, but I DON'T have my RwS spreadsheet template available. Drat it all with computers sometimes anyway.Last week I put Naoko by Keigo Higashino on hold at my library. I picked it up yesterday but can't for the life of me remember which task this book qualified for. I am pretty sure I saw it on a linked list in one of the tasks. It's not a title I would have come up with on my own. But now I can't find the task it belongs to.
It looks like a good book, and it will get Translation style points, but drat it I can't pigeonhole it now. So, if you don't have enough to do between reading and ompiling your own TBR lists; and want to help me find the task this errant book belongs to, I'd sure appreciate it.
Maybe someone else has seen it on a list and remembers which task it belongs to, or perhaps has also penciled it in for that elusive task? If so, please let me know. It would sure put my mind at ease. :-)

I can't see it on any of the lists. However, the brief description sounds as if it would fit 20.5 They Read, as it appears to have more than one narrator. It also would fit 15.7 Foreign Languages.
Hope you get reunited with your spreadsheet.

I don't think I understand the access problem, but can you upload your spreadsheet to google docs and be able to use it anywhere?
Yes, but then I have to start a whole new spreadsheet with all the point formulas etc I have already done in my template. Seems like too much work at the moment.
For task 10.3, meta reading, does Shades of Grey by Jasper Fforde work? The first sentence is "It began with my father not wanting to see the Last Rabbit and ended up with my being eaten by a carnivorous plant."

One online review stated it was not meta-fiction.

I have not posted points in awhile and my brain is not working right now. What is the policy on claiming Combo points for an author you have read already for the task points?Can you only use the same author once for a task and once when claiming combo points for the same task? Or can you claim combo points multiple times for the same task by the same author?
For example:
Book 1- The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde
Task:
20.1- I Read
Combo:
10.3 Meta Fiction
10.2 Highly Rated
Book 2- Lost in a Good Book by Jasper Fforde
Task:
10.3 MetaFiction
Combo:

However, I haven't seen any reason to limit author repetitions for tasks or combo points, so you could claim all three books for 10.3 meta-fiction with combo points for 10.2 or vice-versa.

This book does not appear to qualify as a stream of conscious novel. It is written in first person, yes, but, it is telling the story outside of the person, not an internal dialogue.

Can anyone who has read Still Alice recommend a task for it? The bookclub I'm in has picked it and I have a hold on it at the library. I haven't had a look at the actual book yet.
I've already done Back to School tasks 15.2 Science and 15.9 Health. Is 15.6 Psychology too much of a stretch? I see that it qualifies for 10.2 Highly rated, but I was hoping to use a different book for that and I'm trying not to repeat tasks. It would be interesting if it met 20.1 I read, though I bet that would be a hard book to write and read. (Its about a woman diagnosed with Alzheimers.)

I should wait for Rebekah to weigh in, but it seems like it should fit for 15.6 Psychology as it deals with a branch that studies Cognitivism. Alice is certainly losing her cognitive function.Excellent book, by the way. It may change how you view aging.
For Sam's 20.10 task, it has to say "Undead" and not just "Dead", I'm thinking? (I wish I would have read that properly the first time around)

I agree. Cognitive function is an aspect of psychology.
For the Group Read book, A Parchment of Leaves, combo points as the main character is a Cherokee Indian

Thanks! I'm vague on where the cross points are between neurology/psychiatry/psychology. I was thinking specifically about the disease aspect and not as much about the impact. When you and Elizabeth said "cognitive function", that made psychology not sound like so much of a reach as I had thought. Picking it up from the library today!

I'm going to crosspost this question about Back to School. I know I am risking being annoying, but I want to start tracking down the books if they are eligible.
For the I read, You read, they read, we read tasks, do we have to use the list or can we use any book?
Jayme, it depends on the task. For 20.6 you must use the linked list. For 20.1 - 20.5, the lists are examples only. I would recommend, however, except for 20.5 that doesn't have examples, that you ask if your book qualifies if you choose off list.
if you use 20point tasks as a combo point does the book have to be on the list provided?
The same rules apply for combos as for the task.
Can The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan fit task 10.3 meta reading and/or 20.2 you read? in the beginning the main character addresses the reader as "you" before he begins his story.
