It looks like alphabetical order but it is numnbered

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14225 comments It isn't necessary to number the awards if you were going to use just the winners. It's possible to put in the low number as the beginning year, and the last year as 2011. If you were also going to list runners-up, of course you would need to create your own list.

It looks like alphabetical, at least the first twenty or so, but then it's not:

20. The White Tiger, by A. Adiga (#6 by pub. date)
21. The Accidental, by A. Smith (#20 by pub date)
22. Line of Beauty, by A. Hollinghurst (#21 by pub date)
23. The Book About Blanche and Marie, by P. Enquist (#23 by pub date)
24. The Master, by C. Toibin (#24 by pub date)

whimsicalmeerkat I am already working on a list of 20 books for the year randomly generated from the 1001 Books to Read Before You Die list. Do I need to run the RNG again on the entire list, or can I simply run it for the books from my already selected list to determine what to read next?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14225 comments Denae, you are welcome to use any list you're working from, so if that is a narrowed 20 book list - go for it!

message 59: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat Whew. I had visions of trying to read Ulysses and Finnegan's Wake at the same time or something. Thank you!

That could be tough. I heard a rumor that some unfortunate enterprising soul landed Moby Dick for this task.

message 61: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat I'm so glad I've read that already. My first run on the 1-20 came up with Gravity's Rainbow, but I'm already 66% of the way through it. Don't suppose I can still count it?

I will be reading Finnegan's Wake in November, but that's because of a challenge to a friend that I didn't think would get accepted, so it won't count. I need to see if I can find a cheap copy of Saturday Night and Sunday Morning because our library doesn't have it.

The unofficial rule is that you can count one book that you are less than 50% through on the start date of a challenge for that season's challenge.

Liz M itpdx wrote: "I am new to this group. It sounds like you can complete a task three times for points during a challenge. Is this correct?"

You can repeat the 10 point and 20 point tasks as many times as you like. ETA: with the exception of 10.6 Fall Freebies, which can only be claimed three times.

All ten of the 15 point tasks must be completed as a set before you can repeat them (in other words the only way to claim 15.4 three times is to have completed all the BtS tasks twice already).

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14225 comments itpdx wrote: "I am new to this group. It sounds like you can complete a task three times for points during a challenge. Is this correct?"

You can complete any of the 10- and 20-point tasks as many times as you want, unless stated otherwise. The exception this challenge is 10.6 Fall Freebies, which, as you've noted, you can do only 3 times.

The 15-point tasks are a challenge within a challenge. You can repeat them, but only after you have completed all ten 15-point tasks.

And, welcome! We hope you enjoy the challenge!

Rebekah (bekalynn) Just checking but no style points for Canon or series, right?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14225 comments Nope, this challenge the style points are:

Combo
Review (10 points)
Translated works (10 points)
Oldie (5-25 points)
Jumbo (5-25 points)

So lots of possiblities with the expanded style points.

Deedee | 2279 comments Wow, thanks Rebekah for generating the lists! I'm going to borrow your BookerPrize list from post 48. And ... the winner is 29! Hey, Deedee, that's the list I'm using too! I had to re-roll again on the first time because I got number 39, Midnight's Children which I had used for a task in the Spring Challenge so on my second try I got a 22, Possession. It's pretty long but I hope it isn't as complicated as it sounds. I just know every time I try, I'll get a big ol' jumbo to deal with! (smile)

Rebekah (bekalynn) Elizabeth, How are you doing on the Pulitzers? Let me know if there is one you have trouble finding. I think I could chalk up about 2 years of the time I ultimately used to read them all could be accounted for trying to locate them! I was surprised how few libraries only carry a handful of them. I had always assumed that the libraries would be sure to carry all of them and the other major awards as well! I ciuldn't believe how many were out of print. I spent a lot of quality time at book stores, new and used, on the internet and eBay looking for certain volumes. Anyway I would be happy to send you one you need if I have it. I remember His Family (the first one), So Big, Guard of Honor, Dragon's Teeth and The Edge of Sadness as being particularly difficult to find.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14225 comments Very generous of you, Rebekah. I'm so far backed up with my reading material, that I ought not to take advantage of it. With the internet, so much more is accessible. I really like using http://www.alibris.com/ for used and out of print books, in case that's a help to you and others locating hard to find books.

This and Powell's were some of the sites I used. You're right even though it was just a couple of years or so ago, there wasn't as much access.
I found some on eBay that were leather bound because apparently franklin Mint had published them as a series in the 70's, so I was able to get a few really nicce ones, fairly cheap.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 2595 comments Would the Stephanie Plum series be considered highly rated? I read both High Five and Hot Six and if they are I like to use them for task points.

message 91: by Liz M (new)

Liz M I bet somebody in this group did rate them five-stars. To confirm: Click on the RwS Bookshelf link. On the top left below the RwS photo icon, enter the title in the search box. On the results page click on the "view group reviews »»" link. Scroll down to see the reviews/ratings by group members.

If you are looking at your goodreads shelves with the default settings, there is a "date added column".

In any case, you have until Thurs. at midnight pacific time to add it to your shelves in order to qualify for 10.6.

If it was ever on your TBR list at all, then it will fit the Freebies task because the deadline of Sept 15 has yet to occur
