King did a good job of building up a very creepy atmosphere and ghost story until the end. As soon as he gave the house a voice and the boy, Danny, started interacting with it, the overall sense of horror was destroyed, and I was no longer reading a horror novel; it became some kind of strange-fiction story.
Ultimately, I think all of the changes Kubrick made to the story in the film were improvements. He omitted the topiary scenes which I think were also overdone, and he left more things ambiguous, so the story remained scary to the very end.
I agree...Although it is a very good book, it is one of few that the movie was an improvement. King has several books which are good...and then the ending is so ridiculous.
