King did a good job of building up a very creepy atmosphere and ghost story until the end. As soon as he gave the house a voice and the boy, Danny, started interacting with it, the overall sense of horror was destroyed, and I was no longer reading a horror novel; it became some kind of strange-fiction story.

Ultimately, I think all of the changes Kubrick made to the story in the film were improvements. He omitted the topiary scenes which I think were also overdone, and he left more things ambiguous, so the story remained scary to the very end.

Al- I agree...Although it is a very good book, it is one of few that the movie was an improvement. King has several books which are good...and then the ending is so ridiculous.

Steve In all versions of the Shining...book and both movies...i dislike the endings.

Nancy Boone Now I disagree. I much prefer the book to the movie. Although I really enjoyed watching Jack Nicholson go crazy.

Mark Faulkner I still prefer the book, but in my humble opnion, King is a bit naff at endings. Still a brilliant writer though and love a lot of his stuff.
