30.2 Cheryl TX/Lori BNPL’s task: Unique Fall Holidays
For this task you must read 2 books.

You must choose a different option from this list for each book. Options with specific words to be chosen can be in the title or subtitle but NOT the series title.

1. November is National Novel Writing Month—If you were to write a novel, tell us the genre and read a similar book. Required: Please state the genre when you post. Optional: Tell us what you would name your novel and give a brief plot line.

2. Book Lover’s Day (11/5) and Read a Book Day (9/6)—Name your favorite book and read a similar plotline or the same author. Required: Please include the title of your favorite book when you post.

3. Clean Your Refrigerator Day (11/15)—Name the nastiest thing you have ever found in your refrigerator and read a book with that word in the title. Required: Please include the "thing" when you post

4. Dictionary Day (10/16)—read a book with an unknown or unfamiliar word in the title. Required: Please state the word you used when you post. Optional: Provide a brief definition and state whether the use of the word in the title was accurate.

5. National Adoption Day (11/19)—Read a book about adopting or rescuing any kind of animal (including humans). State the animal being adopted or rescued if it is not clear from the title of the book.

6. National Dessert Day is October 14 as well as National Angel Food Cake Day (10/10), Cherries Jubilee Day (9/24), National Pumpkin Cheesecake Day (10/21), National Date Nut Bread Day (9/8), and National Parfait Day (11/25)—Read a book with one of the following words in the title: Dessert, Cherry, Jubilee, Pumpkin, Cheesecake, Date, Nut, Parfait, Cake, Food (only plurals are allowed as alternatives.)

Each book you choose from the options above must meet one or more of these criteria. You must cite a different criterion for each book ex. an A and a J, but not J and J. Required; If you choose one of the criteria that includes a cover, Please provide a link to the book or the cover (preferred) when you post.

A. Author is a GoodReads Author
B. Author is deceased
C. Book has won or been nominated for an Award or Prize Required: Name the Award or Prize and the Year.
D. Author is a First Time Author
E. Author uses Initials instead of first and/or middle name or uses 3 names
F. Book includes untraditional material inside (i.e., maps, pictures, drawings, symbols, diagrams, financial graphics, recipes, cast of characters
G. Book on the cover
H. Dessert on the cover
I. Animal on the cover
J. Book is part of a series—the series must be identified as a series on GoodReads (i.e., “Series Name” and # should appear on the book’s main page after the book title)

Required: State option and criteria used for each book. If not apparent state how each book meets option and/or criteria.

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments ok, so jus tmaking sure I can understand...I can pick 1. - National Novel writing month twice, but the second criteria have to be different? and if so, can I pick 2 different genres right? because the example you gave down the bottom, has 1 listed twice, but says no 2 j's...so i'm confused!!

The top options have to be different for each book as well as the criteria.

message 7: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments ok - thanks - you guys might want to clarify that in the rules, because it is definately confused ;) but I got mine figured out I got a 1.A and a 6.J

mstan | 868 comments I am planning to read The Perilous Gard for #2 (B, E) but realised from the book description that 'gard' may be part of a name of a building in the book. However, it does have a definition too in the dictionary (albeit an obscure one). Can I still use it?

I guess what I am asking is whether place/building names can be used too if they also have a dictionary definition.

message 9: by Matt (last edited Aug 21, 2011 03:38AM) (new)

Matt (mattdunstan) | 6 comments Yeah I agree this part of the rules might need an edit:

"ex. 1 A and 1 J, but not 2 J’s"

It sounds like you can pick two books from the number categories, but not from the letters (looks like two number 1's are OK as long as they go with different letters). But you're saying that's not what you meant?

For options 1-6 "You must choose a different option from this list for each book."

For criteria A-J "Each book you choose from the options above must meet one or more of these criteria. You must cite a different criterion for each book"

The example referred to the criteria- edited for clarity.

Cindy AL (cangelmd) | 645 comments (OK I know this is going to sound dumb, sorry)

What is a "First Time Author"? Author's first book? New to you? Or is that a category on Goodreads, and if so how do I find it?

I assumed that it meant author's first book, but then I started really thinking about it, maybe that means the author's ONLY book?

message 12: by KarenF (new)

KarenF (cleocleveland) | 266 comments I have a question about Option 2 - Book Lover's Day. Do pseudonyms count? So if a favorite book is by Amanda Quick can I read a Jayne Castle or Jayne Ann Krentz (all the same person) book? Or should it be strictly by pen name?

Thanks!

kiki (keekers) | 815 comments would you accept The Elephant Keeper for option 5? sounds like some characters rescue some elephants from a circus? thanks for your help! :)

message 14: by ★Meghan★ (new)

★Meghan★ (starinheaven) | 815 comments For option 2 does it have to be really similar in plot line. Or can it be kind of like a similar genre plot line. Because I love At First Sight by Elizabeth Chandler when I was growing up and still read it every once in awhile. However I want to see if anyone has a good book to recommend. I just read Anna and the French Kiss during this last challenge which was really similar. So maybe something like that one as well.

A first time author is an author with only one currently published book. There are a few ways to look for this, try Popular debut books, but check to see that only one book is currently published.

Generally similar will work- there should be some identifiable elements in the book description common to both books

For 2. Book Lover’s Day? or for 4.Dictionary Day? If "gard" is an unfamiliar word to you, it works- even if it is explained in the book description or refers to a place.

kiki wrote: "would you accept The Elephant Keeper for option 5? sounds like some characters rescue some elephants from a circus? thanks for your help! :)"

From a few reviews, it seems that the elephants are bought and sold rather than adopted. The caretaker develops a relationship with the animals, but doesn't own them. Without too many spoilers, here's one review

Cindy AL (cangelmd) | 645 comments Thanks, Dlmrose! 'Nother question (I know, I know).

If a book has 2 authors, do both need to be Goodreads authors to fit option A?

We have great tasks this time, many of them are wide open. This is one of the more circumscribed ones, which actually makes it fun, especially when you don't have to spend so much time on some of the others. But it does make for more questions!

Only one of the authors needs to be a Goodreads author.

Sorry Dlmrose - I was so careless. I meant #4, Dictionary Day. OK thanks, I will use The Perilous Gard then!

If the word has a definition I will take it. If it is only used as a place name then it won't work.

Sandie (chocdrop) | 212 comments For Criteria I - Animal on the cover, do any kind of creatures work, or does it have to be more of a mammal type animal? I would like to read May Contain Nuts which has birds on the cover.

message 32: by Randi (new)

Randi (mrsrandimoulton) | 254 comments I was wondering if Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children would work for 4. Dictionary Day, as I knew "peregrine" was a falcon, but not that it could also be used as an adjective: "Coming from another country; foreign or outlandish." So not sure if knowing one way the word could be used would count or not. :) If so, I also wanted to make sure that it would count for criteria F, as it contains photographs as well. I just wanted to check since I finally got the book from my library's eBook waiting list! Thanks!
