I am almost finished with this and my only complaint is that the title states pike Logan #1 kind of takes the suspence away when you know its a pike Logan series and he probably isn't going to die regardless of the circumstances.

Good point, Travis. I think nowadays, everything is a series, so it does take some of the element of risk out of a story, because you know they won't be killed. Unless it's supernatural, because in that case, the hero could die, and just be resurrected. :)

Travis (travistousant) | 362 comments having a pretty good run on books this week. Hounded found entertaining for a light and quick read. The Defector sat down and read half the book in no time. So far, I just don't know where we're headed and it keeps the pages flying. A Higher Call: An Incredible True Story of Combat and Chivalry in the War-Torn Skies of World War II very likely to end up a 5 star read on this one. I'm only 1/3 through, but it is great so far. It is at this point a first hand account of being a German pilot in WWII and it is amazing this man lived to an old age with what he went through. Based in Africa fighting for the Suez Canal has been the story so far. Now he is back in Germany as the Allies prepare to come in and destroy it. Non fiction but full of action I highly recommend this one it is exciting.

Eileen In the middle of reading The Wrecking Crew which is full of great action and suspense. I'm also listening to Chiefs which is a great read so far. A good week for me when it comes to finding good books to read!

message 3119: by Ctgt (new)

Ctgt Jim wrote: "How did you like the Helm book, Ctgt? Have you read the series before?"

First time for the series for me. Although there was a one strong female character, the overall view of women was dated. That being said you have to take into consideration when the book was written, so it didn't sidetrack the story for me. I thought it was a good setup book and I have the second in the series waiting to be read. (view spoiler)

We must have the psychic thing going with Chiefs. We'll have to compare notes later. I'm not real sure how I feel about it being broken into three distinct sections.

Travis (travistousant) | 362 comments Really enjoying the audio for the Iron Druid Chronicles. Should finish Hexed and start Hammered today. If you take your fantasy rather seriously these books aren't for you but if you like a light hearted actionish comedic read these are quite entertaining

I wasn't sure about the three sections myself. Then once I got into the story, which to be honest took me more than a few chapter's. I wanted to see were the story was going.

How far along are you? I'd be happy to compare notes.

message 3125: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) "Chiefs" was an excellent book. I saw it on TV first, then found the book used & read it a few years later. It was even better.

message 3126: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I don't have a problem with the women in the Helm series. I thought they were perfect for the times, better than most. He quite often has very tough, smart women to contend with or rely on. Some are plain vicious, some are useless. Some grow into pretty pretty decent partners, just like the men.

Scott | 126 comments Eileen wrote: "Wow, you're moving right along with this series. I haven't gotten to Assassin's Code yet, what do you think so far?"

I thought Assassin's Code was the weakest of the first four books but it was still good.

Lake Erie caught my eye - why Lake Erie? Sailing on Lake Erie has danger enough, an example is found in my short story Ten More. I think there was a time when she had a higher rate of shipwrecks than any of the Great Lakes. Just curious.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I just finished Satori by Don Winslow, a sequel to Shibumi by Trevanian. It explains much about Nicholas Hel, the cynical assassin & how he was formed. Surprisingly good. I gave it 4 stars. My review is here:

Travis (travistousant) | 362 comments Finished Reliquary it was good until justa few too many tthings got accomplished in a 4 hour window . About half through Monster Hunter Alpha.

As to One Rough Man: A Pike Logan Thriller - Book 1 my issue was too much luck on the part of the main character s I let it slide being the first in a series but in the next book I'm gonna need a little more development in pike to continue any further. I really hope the author does this as there family events of pikes that I'm assuming g will be dug into as pike goes along and I really want to know what and who dunnit

I live near Lake Erie and even though I've had some wild days sailing on the lake we don't have any pirates, well at least I've never seen any. That's what I was thinking while reading The Wrecking Crew.

I didn't know that about Lake Erie, I'll have to check out your short story.

I liked it. I'm not usually a big fan of books broken into sections like that but there were enough recurring characters that you didn't need to learn new ones. I don't think I will continue the series though, I really liked the first chief, Will Henry and would have preferred more stories about him.

I will be picking up Dark Hollow at the library this week. Maybe we can get to the third one next week? Nikki wants to buddy up, so maybe we can all get together.
