I need to go fix lunch. My 17 year old 3 legged cat is circling the recliner waiting for me to leave. It seems either me or my laptop is taking up her bed-space. Must be nap time for geriatric felines.

Only a couple? I have read all the Reacher books, and I liked The Affair especially well. That is the first one, I think that described love scenes. (And pretty darn good ones they were!)

I am currently reading a Jack DuBrul, Charon's Landing. Not really my cup of tea, but if you like complete descriptions of all the weapons, ships, etc., it is a good one. I, also, have a problem with superman heroes. (Come on, the FBI lab missed this crucial clue, but our hero recoginized it? Reacher is tough and smart, but not all out of reason.) But that said, DuBrul writes very well. The plot is based on a villain seeking world domination (nothing new there, but it works). And of course, a super weapon and super villain to match the super hero, who is drunk most of the time. There is plenty of action. This is sounding more negative than I meant it to be. As I said, not my cuppa.

Well, I have commitments to read several "group read books" and also a dozen or so library books have arrived all at once including 4 interlibray loan books that got here all at once (a couple after a wait of a couple of months)... One the books that came in is Winterbirth, a nearly 600 page brick. Hope it's good.

Some of these may have to wait a bit...

I'm reading Zoe Sharp's Hard Knocks. But I just finished "The Girl Who Would be King" by Kelly Thompson and can't stop raving about it. Very different, fun, off-beat, etc..

Just finished The Princess Bride. I have seen the movie several times in the past, but had never read the book. It has the same quirky feel as the movie, although I thought I remembered Humperdink being more of a goofball in the movie, but maybe that's my memory fogging up again.

I've been on the waiting list for Seal Team 666. Library notified me today that I could download it...except I can't. The file shows "checked out to me" but then it shows "0 content" and an extremely small file size. I tried again, no soap.

I called them and was finally told the tech support people will get back to me...at some point. Maybe they'll send me an E-mail. I asked that they call. It seemed a novel concept, talk to a human, in person. I think it might have scared them a bit.

Meanwhile I have a book checked out to me, but not actually there.

The Girl Who Would Be King looks interesting. I looked it up at Amazon, it's still priced below $5 for kindle.

Is it just a fun book, which is fine, or is there a good role model in it? (I have a 7 year old daughter and I'm always trying think of pushing books her way...even when she gets to be my age...assuming I'm around to push.)

Yeah, that sucks when that happens. I can borrow some books through Amazon Prime for free to read on kindle, sometimes I get a few pages in and decide it's not for me... it still holds up my borrowing for a month.

That reminds me of an interview with Lou Holtz, Coach of Notre Dame Football at the time. He was basically asked what do you say to your team at half-time to pick them up for the rest of the game when their basically getting the crap beat out of them on the field.

"Well, you go in and tell them, we've made some changes were' going to do this and that a little better and say 'I know we're going to move the ball in the second half.' Then you say under your breath after the players head back to the feild 'I just hope to God it's foreward."

Sounds like you've got some movement on this one.

Might be advanced for a seven year old (language/sexual situations). I'd think it would be fine for jaded 13+ yr-olds. You might read it first. There are two great role models in it, the do-gooder and the evil one. Both are good role models.

The Villain's a good role model? (and for the record, she's seven now, but I've been told they get older pretty quickly. I'm just trying to stay ahead of her.)

A good role model for what NOT to do. There are plenty of villains who fit that mold, but this one is likable, making her descent into villainy all the more difficult for the reader. It's a great book for adults too; my wife and I loved it.

I've never downloaded audio books from the library. Is it normally a way thing to do? I have a library card. Do I just sign up online?

I was using Overdrive today for some audio books. I got 2 emails that books on my waiting list were in. I went to download them & was told I was over my limit.

Eilene, the library thing seems to be a bit different depending on the library, but basically you login to your library with your library card number. They'll often have you create a user name & password. Then you find an audio or ebook you want. That's when the trouble starts.

You say you want it, so they send you to a third party site. You have to create another login & password there. Depending on the site & how the gods are feeling, I usually have to go looking for my book again unless I'm already logged in.

Once you find your book, you try to download it. You have to install their application the first time & it seems like it wants me to upgrade every time I use it after that. Once it is installed, it downloads the book for you.

After that, it really depends on your device. It will reside on your computer for the allotted time, generally 14 - 21 days. You can use the application to transfer it to your device up to 6 times.

Thanks, Jim. I was wondering how that works. I'll have a to give it a try. I've only ever walked into a library and physically checked out a book. Lately the selections for books I like to read is getting harder and harder to find.

In Nashville Eileen there is a tab at the bottom of the library home page. It takes you to a page where you can search by title/author/key word. The page is still a "library page" and from there you can download E books and audio books with your library card. It's an Overdrive page but still connected to the library.

Eileen, I get ebooks from the library all the time...the system you will use depends on the library you go to. There is Overdrive, and my library uses R.E.A.D.S. I'm sure there are others. Your library website should direct you. Good luck!

Well, in my opinion, Mark, Child can't write Reacher fast enough,anyway. Maybe another "Reacher/Puller" will fill in the blanks. (Wait a minute! Reach. Pull. Did he do that on purpose?) Maybe Baldacci wanted to go opposite the Camels. I picked up Zero Day at The Thrifty Peanut (used book store) recently.

I finally struggled through Jack DuBrul (all 600 pages). Nope, not my cuppa. Then I picked up an Iris Johansen without looking at the copyright date (1990). Mistake, that.

It was a romance with one of the absurd plots they were writing in the 1980's and 1970's. It made the bodice ripper style proud. (You do realize that in recent years, you couldn't sell that on a bet? You couldn't give a ripper to a major publisher.) But it did demonstrate the writing style that has made her a best seller in the last 20+ years. I especially like the suspense stories she is writing lately. Dark Summer was a great one, with a bit of paranormal included.

I've finished Spinward Fringe Triton and picked up the next in the series, Spinward Fringe Frontline. This an Indie-pub, but it's as good as any pub...pub... you know, the corporate guys...

Lots in this series. Action, Adventure, Gunfights, Romance (about what we found in MHI) daring, space battles, near misses, close escapes, courage, bravery... and, even some good old hardened sci-fi themes and gadgetry.

I like it.

After spending a lot on Cussler & Patterson franchise books with more hits than misses, I'm avoiding the co-written genre unless I have one strongly recommended. The problem is that you have the promise & expectation of the original author's work when the finished product can't stand up. These guys would be better off assuming a new pen name and saying "mentored by XXX".

Finished Too Many Curses. I really enjoy A. Lee Martinez's books. The ones I've read so far have been excellent.

Now I'm reading The New World which will lead into The Knife of Never Letting Go. I want to see if the are appropriate for my kids to read.
