Jonathan Terrington (thewritestuff) | 465 comments The Big Sleep was an interesting read but I feel that the particular genre isn't my favourite. I think I'd prefer it in a visual form of some kind. Still well written and with some good one liners...

message 802: by Eileen (new)

Eileen At the end of Grave Peril and Harry is the best. This series does get better with each book.

Death, Taxes, and a French Manicure so far is a fun fast read. Tara is my kid of gal.

I'm getting ready to start Sharpe's Tiger by Bernard Cornwell. Has anyone else read this series?

I'm enjoying Ramage by Dudley Pope. It's not quite what I imagined, but it's fun, cute and with a little of everything (Romance, Action, Legal intrigue etc.) Pope's got a good sense of humor and, for me, it's set in my old stomping grounds, both at sea, and on land. Some of the sayings are classics.

Quote of the day:

"as for the married woman, that was more tingling below the sword belt and heavy breathing above, certainly not love."

Just started The Gray Man... I think I may have found a new favorite source of "brain junk food".

For anyone interested, Dudley Pope, author of "Ramage" is a protegee' of C.S. Forester who wrote the Horatio Hornblower Novels. The first book, which I'm reading now, was published in 1965. The last book, in 1985. He's a pretty cool Dude for a Guy named Dudley.

THis is a very pleasant story. Ramage (The Lord Ramage Novels, #1) by Dudley Pope

FYI, I cleaned up the review I wrote on Soldier of the Legion by Marshall S. Thomas . Wow, that was a mess... I still think it's hosed but, I'll let it be for now...probably.

Your review was very good, Hugh!

I finished Element Zero and I didn't like it that much. It's highly rated here on Goodreads, so it might just be a mis-match for me. The writing was good, I just found it too dreary and dark. Good action bits, from beginning to end.

message 809: by Tim (new)

Tim Warner | 6 comments I am about half-way through Rosary Girls. I am not gripped but disappointed.

How can a talented writer who has previously hooked me not be so stunning? What happens to them? This is a serious question.

I almost gave up, but I need the foundation for future books which I am hoping I will like better.

Thank you Lady D. I'll be nicer to myself...but I'm still embarrassed by the typos... (and the ones that are STILL there. (sigh)... just call me Sisyphus)

Eileen Finished Grave Peril and all I can say is poor Harry! My ears had a great time listening to this audio book.

I also finished Death, Taxes, and a French Manicure. This was definitely a book I would call a chic lit. Some guys would like it but mostly it was for the ladies. One of my favorite lines in the book was, "I strapped my holster over my polka dot panties." Next time I go undercover I'll know where to conceal my gun...lol.

Love the quote! Boy, what dark, nasty and naughty places a Retired Sailor could go with that! LOL.

I have no idea what I'm reading next. I need to decide. It's almost time to drive home!

Eileen I too, have no idea what I'm going to read next. I will be starting next month's group read soon.

If I start that, I'm going to be finished with it before I'm supposed to start it. It's kind of like one of those time travel conundrum things. You know if I whopped my ancestor in the head and he married the girl next door instead of the woman he was gonna marry...a massive chain reaction might happen and I'd read Excavation in March instead of now...

or something like that... I'm a little fuzzy on my time travel... I'll have to do some more studying.

I have a theory that were time travel possible we could only travel into the future...

Anyway I'm currently really enjoying the Anthony Horrowitz Sherlock Holmes novel.

Okay in the last 2.5 days I've completed the first 2 Gray Man novels: The Gray Man The Gray Man (Court Gentry, #1) by Mark Greaney and On Target (Court Gentry, #2) by Mark Greaney On Target. If I didn't have commitments tomorrow and things to do tonight I'd move right on to the third Ballistic, which I already have waiting.

My only complaint so far is that there's only 3 novels (again, so far). If the third is anywhere near as satisfying as the first 2 (and these are straight "actioners" no subtlety, no touchy feely, just gunfire, explosions, blood and sweat) I'll probably pick up anything Greaney writes as soon as it comes out.

message 824: by Eileen (new)

Eileen Ok, you've peeked my interest, I've just added The Gray Man to my tbr list. Sure sounds like a series of books I would enjoy reading, maybe will start them in the next couple of weeks.

Halfway done with Seed it doesn't have any action in it, a good horror story so far.

message 825: by Diana (new)

Diana I'm reading Storm Rising by Kenneth Hoss. It's a pretty faced paced police procedural.

I'm more than halfway through Snake Skin, which is a police procedural/crime novel, but it has a strong female protagonist who happens to be married with a 12 year old daughter. Of course, I should have known about the snakes... yep... the ol' Kindle Text to Speech had me wiggling in my seat a couple of times.

(sigh) had to be snakes (like I couldn't have guessed from the title?)

I finished Snake Skin, it turned pretty Action oriented towards the end, (pace, plot and feel of the read) though I'd characterize it as primarily a Crime Novel.

Likeable, if a bit neurotic, protaganist, but she's in charge, willing to take risks, a mother, wife, undercover agent and "finer than frog hair".

and I couldn't help myself. I started Excavation.. I know, couldn't wait a day though. Bad, bad naughty Hugh, start book a day early...(those of you who are Python/Holy Grail fans, fill in the blanks for those who aren't.)

Sharon Michael | 449 comments I need to start on Excavation but I ended up going back to The Sunbird for a re-read. I've always found this book fascinating, quite different from most of Wilbur Smith's book, with the start in modern archaelogy, then the story of the people and the ruined city, then back to the modern ending.

Thanks Sharon for reminding me of Wilbur A. Smith. I have only read one of his books When the Lion Feeds, but really enjoyed it. I need to read more of his and The Sunbird sounds really good!

I've finished Ramage, and Snake Skin and have reviews posted on them. I've also finished Excavation and I'm waiting to post a review there, coming soon.

I just started on The Burning Skywhich certainly qualifies as adventure, and opens with a lot of action. It's in the Steampunk/Fantasy end of things. I'm about 40% of the way through it and enjoying it. Not perfect but fun, so far.

message 838: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Terrington (thewritestuff) | 465 comments I've finished too many to put up here. I was racing through my uni texts. Thankfully most were only 150 to 200 pages and so ridiculously short. Probably read about 8 in the last seven days.

aaah...Dresden-San! coool.

I finished blood ties. It's got some dark subject matter, but it's actually a really good read and if you stick with it, you are rewarded with character redemption. I liked the first one, love the second one for different reasons and Lucy Guiardino should go on the strong female heroine list!

I'm not starting on Swan Song by Robert R. McCammon. It's another one with some dark and gory details, but it's also well written with some wonderful descriptions and unusual characters.
