Liked this book- Recommendations for a book that's NOT a series?

I really liked this book, but didn't realize it was a series until the end. Does anyone have any recommendations for good books that are NOT a series? I'd like for once to just read a good book and have it be over with.

I also read Discovery of Witches was a fantastic book and I was suprised, upset and happy when I got to the end and got the preverbial to be continued....

I've also read The Historian which I also loved a lot and its not a series! I highly recommend it!

"Doomsday Book" by Connie Willis is somewhat part of a series, but only loosely and is definitely a stand alone. I also recommend "A Dirty Job" by Christopher Moore.Doomsday BookA Dirty Job

I so feel your pain. I too thought this was going to be a stand alone book. I was actually trying to avoid taking on any new series. I enjoyed the book and will read the sequel, but I wish author's would tell you when a book is the 1st in a new series, rather than finding out at the end. That happened to me with Beautiful Creatures, too. I agree with the recommendations of The Thirteenth Tale and The Historian. I'd also recommend The Last Werewolf. Beautiful Creatures (Caster Chronicles, #1) by Kami Garcia The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova The Last Werewolf by Glen Duncan

UPDATE: never mind The Last Werewolf. That's going to be a series too. (deep sigh).

Thank you for the all the remarks here some i have looked up please when you are posting good books and you put the author so i can look up all the books Thanks :)

Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater.

I agree with all of the The Thirteenth Tale and The Historian recommendations. I would also add The Last Station by Jay, Possession by A.S. Byatt, and The Secret History by Donna Tartt

Angelology, by Danielle Trussoni, has scholarly female protagonists, creatures (angels, in this case), missing manuscripts, genealogy and genetics, and no sequels or planned sequels as far as I know. It has a similar feel.

Alaskagrown Oops. This book both:
--will have a sequel.
--Is not very good, after the first half.

Still, it has a similar feel.

"Interview with the Vampire", by Ann Rice. Fabulous. Also "The Vampire Lestat". Which I guess makes it a series, but not thought of as such at the time. Really good writing. Enjoy.

I have loved this discussion because I have gotten a lot of great reads out of it. If I didn't say before, however, I can't wait for the next one in this series. Like Dana, I loved this so much that I was delighted another would be published. It'll have a lot to live up to, however. When I read A Discovery of Witches, I also thought I'd like to reread it. Like Dana, that is something I almost never do.

this list is fantastic. i loved rule of four and just finished reading battle royale which was amazing.

The Thirteenth tale is one of my favorite books. I recommend it to all serious/avid readers.

You'll see it's the first of a series. However ...! I didn't read as if it was the first in a series. Not at all.

Golden Shorline is a stand alone book and excellent to read.

I agree with A Vintage Affair & The Thirteenth Tale. Sarah Addison Allen's books are all stand alone and are good, quick reads. Graceling & Fire by Kristin Cashore are about the same "world" but are not a series. The House at Riverton or the Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton are also really good.

Well a book that i really liked, was " The Lost Enchantress" by Patricia Coughlin, and it doesn't have a part II. Also "Mistwood" by Leah Cypess was surprisingly diferent. In a good way.
If you still havent read it, i would recomend you to try "Turtle Moon", " Practical Magic" and " Probable future" by Alice Hoffman.
Also " Juliet" by Anne Fortier is one of my favourite books and it's a stand alone.
And then there's " The mercy of thin air" by Ronlyn Domingue.

I really liked Night Circus. Not sure if the books are similar, but I liked both :)

Just to comment as someone who always has to know what the book is about before I read it, if you read the synopsis on the inside of the front cover, it says at the bottom " A Discovery of Witches is book one of the All Souls trilogy. Look for the next book in 2012". So the author actually did tell us from the beginning. :)

I feel your pain...I picked up this book SPECIFICALLY for the reason that I thought it wouldn't be a series and low and behold I have to wait another six months just to get the second one! In all honesty if the author couldn't get the whole story out in 600, miniscule font, pages I don't know how the story is ever going to end! I mean I'm still going to read the next two but seriously how much more can there be to the whole witch vampire love story?

If you want a good book that is just one book I would reccomend Chain of Hearts by Maureen Mcarthy. It is VERY different to this book, there's no fantasy, vampire or witches stuff but it is honestly the best single book I've read in a long time.

Shadow of Night is the next one in this series and it should be out Summer 2012 according to the authors website. Like you I was disappointed when I got to the end but enjoyed it so much I have reread it since (something I rarely do). I am so invested now I can't wait til the next comes out. I like all of the recommendations I will definately check them out.

I didn't realize it was a series till the end either and what kinda bummed me was that there was no info on when the next book would come out. I realize writing an almost 800 page book takes time, but it didn't look like it would be happening in the next year or so which, given how many books I read a week (like 3-4) I'll need to read it again before starting book 2 just to get back up to speed. Jennifer Carroll's books are like that -- too long in between them so they're hard to follow. She's very good, I think, by the way.

I'm trying to think of the last stand alone I read that I enjoyed and I think it was Howard's Prey -- if you like romantic suspense. for historical Mia Marlowe's Touch of a Thief was good.

I would recommend Casting Spells by Barbara Bretton if the paranormal romance element in Discovery of Witches was part of its appeal for you. Casting Spells has a much different feel to it--lots of humor and not nearly so serious. If you decide to read The Thirteenth Tale as someone else recommended and you like it, I would also recommend The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters or The Ghost Orchid by Carol Goodman--it also has a spooky, gothic feel to it and some academic types for characters--writers. I plan to check out those that others have recommended, too. I liked Discovery of Witches more than most books I've read during the last year or so.

How about A Vintage Affair by Isabel Wolff Queen of Kings by Maria Dahvana Headley I even hear The Paris Wife by Paula McLain

The Mummy by Anne Rice This was published awhile ago, but it's an amazing stand-alone. If you haven't read it you should.

The Thirteenth Tale is one of my favorite books of all time. I would suggest that above all others. I would also suggest Don't Breathe a Word and Before I Fall. I really liked both of those books as well.

Another wonderful book is "The Historian" which, despite its title, has a good touch of the paranormal in it and it's not a series. Excellent read, look up the reviews.

I did the same thing. I picked up the book not noticing it was the beginning of a series. As I got closer to the end, I realized there was still alot to resolve. I do not mind a series if they can stand independent. This does not.
Maybe The Book of Lost Things or The Book of Unholy Mischief.

Sundays at Tiffany's. A very easy read that is also a decent story.

Also:

The Time Traveler's Wife

I like this one as well and I was taken aback when I came to the end to find a part two was on the way.

Anyway some of the stand alone books I like are Sunshine by Robin McKinley Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman The War of the Flowers by Tad Williams

Two I have never read are War for the Oaks by Emma Bull Good Omens by Terry Pratchett
