Peace, Seeley
Hi my name is Jack McGlynn and Action/Adventure is my bag!
I don't limit myself to this genre strictly, but I want everything I read to have some action in it.
Genre wise - I find fantasy is usually a sure thing for a few fights but Sci-Fi can often skimp on the goods.
Anyone else noticed this, yeah?

As for your observations, not really. If its a hard conceptual sci-fi like from Philip K. Dick or Asimov or Clarke, maybe, but they're not really "action" books to begin with. But if its more contemporary sci-fi adventure where a very little "science" leans on a much bigger "fiction", most of the time there's plenty of great action-suspense to go around too. Atleast that's just from my personal experience anyway :P
Welcome Jack. And, If you read sci-fi, Randolf Lalonde's Spinward Rift series has a lot of action in it.
Jack Campbels "Lost Fleet" Series is military Sci-fi with lots of battles, maybe not pure action though.

I can recommend the Lost Fleet books also. Good reads. Some politics and so on but not enough to slow the books down.

Welcome Jack. I am more of a fantasy fan than sci-fi. I'd probably like sci-fi that is heavier on the action.
Welcome Joan.
Welcome Joan.
Welcome Jack. glad to have you and Joan here. If you like Sci-fi that's heavy on action try Soldier of the Legion I enjoyed that one. (A few more suggestions there.)

Hi Everyone,
I'm Pam. I was a member here before but took a hiatus from GR for a while.
I love action so genre doesn't matter as long as there is some element of action related excitement.

Have you read anything from Robert Crais? His series with Joe Pike and Elvis Cole is a good one. The Watchman is the first in the series.

I agree with Eileen, Cole-Pike books are fantastic character-driven crime mystery thrillers. Although I think The Monkey's Raincoat is actually the first in the series.

"The Watchman" is the first in the Joe Pike series and "The Monkey's Raincoat" is the first in the Elvis Cole series. I don't think they needed to be read in order, which I didn't and it didn't seem to matter that much.
Nice selection of authors.

Lionel Davidson's Kolymsky Heights is one of my all time favourite thrillers - would love to see a film of that. This year I've also enjoyed Spiral by Paul McEuen and I was also surprised by how much I got into Steven Pressfield's The Profession
My holy grail is very much thrillers with a progressive/liberal worldview, and I try and stay away from "Ex CIA loner kills lots of foreigners" plotlines. I'm also very interested in finding thrillers with female leads since they are so few and far between outside the police procedural/forensic niche.
Look forward to ransacking group members' shelves for some ideas...
Cheers, Christian

I enjoy spinning action tales as well, and I've written two ultra-Gothic action thrillers. Lots of demons, cathedrals, and gunfights. These are the kinds of books I like best, which is why I like to write them, but I'm always looking for more stories that scratch that itch for something dark, violent, and over-the-top.
Any recommendations for books that are action-packed but also have a chilling, atmospheric edge (and don't have any vampires or werewolves)? Thanks!
Hello Christian and Mark. Welcome to the group.
I'm a big fan of Monster Hunter International too and, I've enjoyed the group read for the McDermott Atlantis story too. It's a fun read.
I also have a soft spot in my heart for Ludlum, Bagely and MacClean.
