Hi, Vijayalakshmi! I am so happy to have you join our group! We have quite a few members in the group from India. I love how we are reading a lot of the same books while being scattered in all parts of the world!

Yes, Diane! All these years I have been randomly reading books but from now onward I am going to follow a pattern so that I cover all the places and also know a glimpse about the people, culture, politics and many more. Thanks for bringing this thought in me.

Tony Slater (tonyjamesslater) | 10 comments Hi folks! I'm new here and looking forward to hanging out a bit. But if it bothers anyone, I'll try to stop anything hanging out that shouldn't. I have been known to have issues in that department...
I'm a keen reader of travel books, especially the comedy variety, and am trying to be a travel writer as well. Sigh! Aren't we all?
I'm 33, a bloke, currently living in Australia, where I emigrated in December after spending the last 7 years bouncing around he world. (That's a lot more painful than it sounds, as most of the world is quite hard to land on).
I love to read - far more than I love to write! - and I love to travel. Things I hate: stopping reading, stopping travelling, stopping drinking - and getting out of bed. Especially if I'm reading and/or drinking in there...
I'm also absurd. Well, if that's grammatically possible?
Okay. An idiot. That'll do :0)
Hi all!
Tony

Tony Slater (tonyjamesslater) | 10 comments Tazi, I'd love to! How would I go about doing that? I'm new to Goodreads, you see - is there somewhere I could post a bit?
Oh yeah, there's a short extract from the book on my website here:

And there's a free sample downloadable from Amazon, if you search for 'That Bear Ate My Pants!'

Tony Slater (tonyjamesslater) | 10 comments Hi Diane! I'm writing about volunteering in Thailand at the mo, but it's taking me a long time! I'm always waffling on about my adventures though (along with raving/moaning about books I'm reading) so I've no doubt some'll come out :0)
Thanks for welcoming me to the group!

Tony Slater (tonyjamesslater) | 10 comments Hooray! I read the tutorial for newbies, and figured out how to add some writing! So if anyone is interested (and please don't feel like you should be!) - I've added a short travel tale, drawn from my adventures in Australia, to my profile. Not sure how you find it, but I'm guessing you much more competent types can figure that out?
Hang on - let me see if I can get a link...

Jan Moran (janmoran) | 13 comments Hi all! Great to have found a place with fellow travelers, reads, and writers. As a girl, I discovered the world through reading, and today, I try to pass the favor along by incorporating my travel experiences in my writing. My new novel, Scent of Triumph, opens on the Atlantic Ocean, then moves to England, France, Poland, and the US. It's coming to kindle soon, too.

Working on my next settings now :). Look forward to meeting everyone! Come friend me :)

Claire | 143 comments Hello,
I'm Claire and I recently--well it's been a year, so maybe no longer recently--retired. I alternate among my four interests: travel, reading, knitting and quilting. I started out with introductions, so have yet to find out what the challenge is all about, but I like world literature. Besides liking books set in other countries (I am in Portland, OR, USA) I especially like books written by authors from those countries.

message 271: by Shelly (new)

Shelly (shellye77) Hello - Just joined this group because while I'm broke and can't afford to go everywhere I want to go, reading my way there sounds like an excellent idea! I joke with my friends and family that if you gave me a passport and a fat enough bank account, there is literally no where I wouldn't want to go. Seeing as how that won't happen, I'll just have to be obliged to read about them.
I'm 34 (yikes! When did that happen?), married to my best friend and currently unemployed. Spent years working in the mortgage industry (please - don't yell at me, it's not my fault, I swear it!) and got burned out in February. I've been taking some much needed time off to clear my head, but need to get back to the real world soon (I want to travel at least a bit and that does require coinage).

As for what I like to read, well, it's a mix, but I love romance, memoirs, well, anything that is character driven. I call it people watching, but I like to see how people react to different things, cultures and emotions, and seeing their environment is always interesting as well. Looking forward to finding more books to add to Mount TBR!

Parikhit | 13 comments Hi everyone!

Parikhit from India. Stumbled upon this group and couldn't be more thankful to a friend who made this possible. As a kid I used to cite travelling as one of my hobbies but that never materialised. I guess I will never travle physically but that hasn't hindered me from virtually travelling. This group was exactly what I was looking for.

I am 25 and I work in the software industry (don't be mad at me for I am a part of the industry that takes up outsourced work). But I wish to breakfree from this soon. Teaching is my calling, I have realised.

Looking forward to a great trip here.

Dana | 13 comments Hello everyone, I'm an author, reader, and mother of three. Born and raised in Lebanon and currently living in South Africa. I've lived in different parts of the world and have a thirst for other cultures. Some of my favourite authors are Aminatta Forna, Isabel Allende, Carlos Ruiz Zafon, Khaled Hosseini and many others who write about their country from the heart. Not to mention of course our very own Gibran Khalil Gibran.

Rachel Persad (racheljanepersad) | 14 comments Hello! I'm Rachel and I'm a massage therapist and academic researcher from the UK. I live in East London with my partner. I love reading fiction but have found it increasingly difficult to find the time since I went self-employed last November. I stumbled across this group and challenge and it's just the perfect thing to get me reading regularly again. I'm going to start Circumnavigating from where I went on holiday last year as a vacation is slow to arrive this year. So I'm starting in Turkey, although I seem to be stuck in the area as the books are so good, it'll be good fun reading myself around the world!

message 283: by Anna (new)

Anna Hi everyone. I'm Kat, bibliophile and college student (19 years old, but I am a very "old soul" at heart and can't seem to act my age). I love world lit of all genres, though I've just started to read it often. I haven't traveled to many other countries in my life, but I look forward to studying abroad and globetrotting when I'm older. For now, I'm mostly an armchair traveler. :)

Let's see... I'm from the US and live in North Carolina. Some of my favorite authors: Neil Gaiman (my very favorite-- I guess he could count for either Britain or the US depending on the book), Khaled Hosseini (seems he's popular here, too), and I like lots of fantasy stuff in general. If anyone has any good magical realism/fantasy books for certain countries, that would be right up my alley! Anyway, looking forward to making a list and starting the challenge!

Welcome, Kat! There are a lot of great magic realism books in world lit from all over, especially in Latin American countries. Some magical realism authors that come to mind are: Gabriel García Márquez, Isabel Allende, Laura Esquivel, Carlos Ruiz Zafón, Haruki Murakami, Jorge Luis Borges, Italo Calvino, Salman Rushdie, and Juan Rulfo.

Evy (evyvn) Hello,

I am Evy, live in the Netherlands and currently doing my research internship.
I love to read (English or Dutch books). Unfortunately I do not always have the time to do that. I read mostly thriller/mystery books. However, I want to broaden my horizon by reading other genres from other countries. This club seems to be a good place to start to look for recommendations. So I will look around.

I am currently reading The Surgeon by Tess Gerritsen (Dutch edition). Books by Carlos Ruiz Zafón, Jussie Adler-Olsen and Stieg Larsson are on my soon-to-read list.

I did travel to Israel and Palestine last year and read a good bit about the areas before and after. One gem I read was The Lemon Tree by Sandy Tolan and I would recommend that.

I am in retail management and work long hours on my feet and I absolutely love to curl up (off my feet) and read a good book with my little dog in my lap.

Lora, I have recently discovered Audiobooks.com For a flat monthly rate, you can download and listen to an unlimited amount of audiobooks. The selection isn't quite as big as Audible, but there still is quite a bit to choose from. I am thinking of signing on for a couple of months after I listen to the audiobooks I have on hand at home.

jarplum Hi, guys/gals, my name is Tracy and I'm originally from the Caribbean - more specifically St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Now, I'm married and living in Toronto, Canada with my hubby and my evil...err..NICE kitty named Dixie (kitten in my pic; she's a big girl now). I love to read and write (mostly fanfiction these days), and I'm heavily involved with web design at the moment. My favourite genre of books is definitely romance coupled with humour. I also enjoy healthy doses of adventure and fantasy in my books. I hope by joining this group, I'll find some undiscovered, goodreads! :D
