Abigail Lubin (nathw) | 11 comments Hello! My name is Nathalie and I currently live in Miami. I love reading and love exploring new cultures, particularly when I have a chance to explore the less well-known and touristy parts of a new country, city, etc. I lived in France for about seven months and plan to move back to Paris in about two years.

I'm very excited to read books from around the globe in this group. :)

My name is Donna, I live in Perth (Western Australia). I found GR earlier this year and it has been a revelation - though my TBR list is getting out of hand! I'm a member of the Aussie Readers Group and decided to look for a second group with world interests. Like the challenges, poll choice has already thrown up other ideas for that groaning TBR and hats off to Diane - this is a large group being looked after well. Am looking forward to next months reads!

Hi, Donna! Welcome to the group! Thanks for the kind words. My TBR list has certainly grown out of control since joining Goodreads, but I have discovered so many great authors and books. You will really enjoy it here.

I've lived in Asia and Africa but most of my life in the UK, where I still live. Book-wise, I'm stuck in Asia at the moment, but glad to have found this group because I have been so focussed on Sri Lanka, it hadn't actually occurred to me to read about other countries. :)

Welcome to the group, Renuka! You will have to let us know some of your favorite books from Sri Lanka.

Renuka | 5 comments Thanks for the welcome, Diane. I missed it at first because I didn't have notifications on.

My favourite book has to be Running in the Family by Michael Ondaatje because I think every Sri Lankan family has one or two of these characters so we know the story well.

Then, partly because I love wildlife, and have recently been researching the aboriginal race, the Veddas, my head has been stuck in books from about a hundred years ago. Wild Ceylon by Dr R.L. Spittel has vivid descriptions of the jungle and its people and I find him to be an elegant story-teller.

I couldn't connect with Village in the Jungle by Leonard Woolf though. He does have some wonderful description of the jungle too and as much narrative drive as Spittel but I was more attuned to Spittel's style. All very subjective.

Me too, but the story of disappeared people in Anil's Ghost was one that needed to be told and by someone of Ondaatje's global status. I did find the military passages hard going though and still don't understand why a sex scene was thrown in. It took me right out of the story. There's a time and a place, I say.

Kimberly Read Hi! I'm Kimberly aka Kim. I am a business manager and part time student - four classes and dissertation away from my PhD. I am a mother of two young adults. And, most importantly, I am an avid reader. Ironically my last name is Read. :) My go-to genres are sci-fi and fantasy, but I will foray into any book that looks interesting. I've already posted my A-Z authors for this year and the places I've visited. Now to start my world trip through books!

Hi Dianne, it is awesome to discuss books from all over the world. SA has 11 official languages so our accents vary- whose are you referring to? I'm curious what people's perceptions of my country are. Its an amazing place to visit.

As a foreigner, it is hard for me to distinguish the differences between South African accents. Although I know there are other languages spoken there, I have only ever heard (or understood) English spoken by the South Africans I have met on this side of the world, and their speech patterns have been similar.

Lisa (lisadannatt) Thanks Diane, you've likely heard our English or Afrikaans accents. I guess it would be like me trying to distinguish various American states by accent.

Valerie Hello ATW!
I've been following this group for about a year just so I could get all the book recommendations. After awhile I realized that I was actually doing ATW because I was reading so many of the books! I just left Zimbabwe with The Hairdresser of Harare and am now in India with Katherine Boo and Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity
So nice "meeting" all of you fellow travelers.

I'm a writer about to embark on an eight week trip around Europe, so I'm looking forward to the recommendations from this group, as I think its way better if you're travelling to read a book based on where you actually are.

That being said, my taste runs to YA, fantasy and sic-fi; not very earth-bound, unfortunately. So if anyone has any good ideas, pls can you message me or post a note on my blog:

Mark Colenutt I am not a man of faith but all the same I will write this in the hope that a lost member might stumble across it while they are searching for something else.

My name is Mark Colenutt from Plymouth, Devon, England. I have spent the past twenty years living in Spain, which is naturally where my knowledge resides. So, if anyone wants any travel advice or cultural pointers then I will be more than happy to drop a helpful line or two. From destinations and dining to culture and travel literature I should be able to rustle up something of interest.

I have already taken a peek at the list of books on Spain and recognised some of the classics, seen some novelties and will add some missing essentials.

I am also an author who has written the 'Handbook to the Legacy & Odyssey of Don QuiXote - Everything the armchair academic needs to know about the greatest novel ever written' and 'Jousting with Windmills - A Journey into the Heart of Spain' which follows my tentative steps into Spanish urban life and travelling to discover some of the country's lesser known jewels.

I very much look forward to learning about other such gems from further afield. I have stepped foot on all five continents but still desire to see just a little more of planet Earth before the oil runs out. I am sure this group will provide me with ample inspiration as to where I should go and what I should read before setting out.

Welcome, Mark! Thank for all of your recommendations for books from Spain! I love to see what people who actually live in the countries recommend. You all have a much better vantage point than I do.

Hi Diane - wow, that was a quick reply! Glad to join the group and I should be able to add a few more titles for those interested in Spain.

The English language has always had a special fascination for Spain and possesses a long and impressive writing tradition concerning the country. In fact, the book I mentioned by Richard Ford is considered the world's first ever travel guide. Don Quixote is considered the greatest novel ever written (not just because it was the first novel ever written) and was first translated into English. Even the proudest Spaniard has a hard job refuting the fact that no other country has had a more involved interest in Cervantes' work than England, from the very first translation by Thomas Shelton to even 'Monsignor Don Quixote' by Graham Greene, no less.

I should shortly be taking over a group dedicated to works on Spain but I am happy to add as much of that content here as suits the purposes of this travel writing group.

Mark Colenutt

Peggy (pebbles84) Hi!

My name is Peggy, and I'm from the Netherlands. I've been on goodreads for a while, but I only recently discovered the groups. Then I thought it would be fun to read books set in different countries, but to do it not by myself but in a group. And I came across you guys!

All that is left for me now is to make one important decision: shall I do the 80 books around the world challenge or the USA Roadtrip challenge?

Did I understand correctly that I can start reading now and should try to finish reading all books by December 31, 2014?

I'm really looking forward to this! :)
