Peter (peterdonnelly) | 35 comments Hi, I'd like to participate in this challenge and I've been looking at the traveller types. I may not be able to read 80 books from 80 different countries in 1 year but I like the idea of reading books from each of the 8 different regions. Should I register as Frequent Flyer or Tourist if I could complete, say 30 books from the 8 specified regions?

Can I also submit 1 post to cover all books read to date in 2018?

Thanks

Hi, Peter. Either path would work, with the Tourist track having the smaller overall requirement. Another option if you plan on reading your books over a longer span of time is to participate in the Circumnavigator track. You can always switch from one track to another as you see fit.

Yes, you may make a post listing all of the books you have read during 2018 that fit the challenge.

Thanks Diane, I think I'll go with Circumnavigator for the long-term goal and try Tourist for this year's challenge. Great organization by the way.

message 208: by Candace (new)

Candace (cprimackqcom) Hi Diane, I just joined and would like to participate in this challenge. It is going to be really lax and just for me but I thought I would wait and post if it is going to begin again in January 2019. I would not get much , if any done, before the end of the year anyway (unless group reads count, I have to look at instructions again!)
Thanks Candace

message 210: by Manilda (new)

Manilda | 1 comments Fun challenge. I am currently reading Dictates of the Heart, where the Heart belongs, a brand new book by a Nigerian author set in Nigeria. It is a beautiful and engaging experience that captures the essence of life in that country. I believe it is a series book and l can't wait for book 2.

Alyssa | 22 comments So I'm reading the book Solo and it starts off in Hollywood, California and the second half of the book is set in Ghana, Africa. Can I list Ghana as the country and California as the state?

You can count them separately in different challenges (ex. ATW80 and US Reading Roadtrip_, just not in the same challenge.

Meghan | 264 comments So I've been chugging along in this ATW80 challenge, to read books from 80 different countries between Jan 1, 2019 and Dec 31, 2019.

I also set up my ATW80 challenge for 80 countries on this page: https://www.goodreads.com/challenges/..., but I just noticed the dates on that page are different, from Dec 8, 2018 to Dec 31, 2019.

Are these two different challenges? I thought they were the same.

They are two different challenges, although you can read the same books for both challenges.

Theresa Wisner (theresawisner) | 4 comments If you're looking for a travel book set in the US, I'm looking for reviewers for my soon to be released memoir, Daughter of Neptune. It takes place on the Pacific Coast, and on the Eastern Pacific Ocean from the Bering Sea to Hawai'i. Woven into the sea story is a father daughter relationship that is based on fishing. I'd love to send you a free copy for review.

message 218: by Drae (new)

Drae Wright | 18 comments Help, please. Just signed up as Rogue then came back to read again with more questions and find that maybe I should have gone Circumnavigator since the plan is to read 40 books a year for 30 years...?

I will be tracking U.S. states and countries (both) but some more general or specific, like this week, an around the world caravan story. Please suggest which track might work best for me.

One more nube question: I successfully started a new discussion (I think, which may now need to be deleted) but can't see where to post a second post on that thread, just a place to comment on my own post. Pardon my denseness but all assistance GREATLY appreciated!

message 219: by Rosemarie (last edited Feb 28, 2019 10:04PM) (new)

Rosemarie | 3952 comments I have more than one thread on the go at once, Drae. I have one thread for this year, and a circumnavigator thread that I have been using for three years, since I started the challenge.
You can start another thread for your circumnavigator challenge.
There is another section for books set in the United
States. I have a thread open there too.

I had the same issues when I joined goodreads, especially since I was using the app. It is fast, but you can do more things when you access goodreads via the web.

Arieke Oolders | 32 comments I've got a question. It's the book The History of the Siege of Lisbon by José Saramago. It takes place in the 12th century in Portugal. But in that time, it isn't officialy Portugal, but country of the Moors.
Can I count it as Portugal? :)

Yes. You can either go by current borders or historical borders.

message 222: by Jovan (new)

Jovan (iovan) | 181 comments Zweig`s "Magellan and Fouche" is perfect for this challenge. So far in the book around 100 pages, I have visited POR, ESP but aslo India, Singapore and Malaysia. As they are ready to venture across Atlantic, BRA, URU and finally ARG (Patagonia) is next.
Other book is "The Angel Voice"by Indridason, mystery set in a hotel in Reykjavik. Happy travels, take some souvenirs.

message 224: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 517 comments Hi Wayne, a good place to start might be to do the tourist challenge. This involves reading 24 books over the course of 2020 set in different countries. You can start anywhere in the world and the books can be fiction or non fiction by authors from those countries or writers who happen to set the books there. You need to start a new topic thread by clicking on "new topic" in the Around the World in 80 Books Annual Challenges and then post each time you finish a book giving the title and the country where it's set, you can add a comment about the book if you want. I have found lots of interesting books to read by following the posts from other people. Good luck with your challenge.

Thank you Ruth. I am quite a voracious reader, so quite keen to do the 80 books jaunt. In fact I am already three books in on my 50 Books Challenge for 2020. South Africa (Africa), India (Asia) and USA (North America). Could I please just ask you to check my set-up when I am finished. Will be much appreciated. Thanks

For the annual challenge you can only use books read in 2020. If you would like to use books from previous years, you could do the Circumnavigator track. There is no time limit and you can bring in any previously read books that you want.

If you started it in 2019 and finished it in 2020 you can count it for 2020.

It really depends on your own definition. For example, Mexico can be counted as either North America or Latin America.
