Lorraine, I would recommend starting slowly, either with a non-timed challenge like Circumnavigator or a timed challenge with fewer books like Tourist. You can always change any time along the way.

Lorraine Petkus Thank you Diane, I think the Lloyd be a tourist

Odette (odman) I am interested in doing this challenge next year - perhaps the frequent flyer to start off with. Where do I find the map to mark off the countries visited?

Stefanie | 131 comments Hi Diane,

Are you planning to curate a ATW2017 list? I can't see it posted, but may have missed something.

Warm wishes,

Stefanie

Diane | 13052 comments Yes, it will continue in the same place as the 2016 challenge. Nothing has changed, in terms of rules.

Erik | 119 comments I have seen some questions about Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union. How about if a book takes place in a non-specifik part of the USSR?
Is that a loophole giving me the option to use a no longer existing country!! Or do I do what my conscience tell mo to and put it down as Russia??

Jodee (msh2os) | 6 comments Hi!! Happy 2017. I am finally joining this reading challenge. I have watched it on the sidelines for a few years. Quick question for anyone. How do you get the book titles to hyper link from goodreads into your upddated posts? I kove adding books that others have read by that quick click. I would like to give the same favor to others who may enjoy a book I have read. Thank you in advance!!

Jodee, when you add a comment, look just above the comment box. You should see "add book/author". Click on that and a small box will pop up where you can search for books and authors and it will add them as a hyperlink. Hope this helps.

message 172: by Becky P (new)

Becky P (zebrafairy) | 39 comments Hi I've just joined as a tourist. Does my first post need to be set in England (I'm from England)? I've read 18 books so far this year, I'm just double checking but as a tourist can I use these books as it doesn't matter which order I read books in? I'm assuming that if I've read more than one book in a country only one book will count.

I'm excited to be attempting this challenge

message 173: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie | 3952 comments Jodee, you cannot link the books if you are using the app. You have to access goodreads via the internet in order to link the book. You can also edit or delete comments using the internet only, not the app. I couldn't figure it out either last year, until another member told me how to do it.
Hope this helps.

Becky,
As a tourist you don't need to start in your home country unless you want to. You can count any books you have read in 2017 for this challenge, but only one book per country will count. You can read the books in any order. Glad to have you joining!

You can read poetry for the challenge. If the setting is non-specific, just claim the authors home country.

message 181: by Katie (new)

Katie (bookmouse424) Hi Diane,

In my other reading challenges, we created a Google spreadsheet for everyone to log in and edit as they completed books. I created one for this challenge. If anyone wants to log their reading on it, they simply need to go to https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/... and edit as they finish or begin books. Feel free to share the link.

Katie

Mudassir Moosa | 17 comments I apologize if this question has already been asked.

What does the country of the author mean? Is it the country where author was born, or the one where he/she lives? (I'm reading a book by Frans de Waal, and not sure should I count it as a book from Netherlands or from USA.) Thanks!

message 184: by Srinu (new)

Srinu | 2 comments I like this Idea but want to know what are the best books of all the 80 countries, like the Alchemist from Brazil and The Diary of a Young Girl Book by Anne Frank from German.

As I am From India I suggest below books

Religion
I suggest to read Bhagavad Gita as it is by A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Auto biography
1) The Life of Mahatma Gandhi by Fischer, Louis
2) Wings of Fire: An Autobiography of Abdul by Kalam Tiwari

I will look forward to see great books of your great countries :-)

It really comes down to your personal interpretation of what that means. It can mean that the author was born and raised in the country or lived in that country for a particular amount of time. Some authors, like de Waal, can count for more than one country. You can claim the authors and books as you see fit.

I often wonder this, too. Thank you for your recommendations. What are your favorites for fiction from India? I have read several fantastic fiction books from India, and I am always open to more recommendations. My favorites so far are A Suitable Boy, A Fine Balance, The White Tiger, and Q & A.

Becky P (zebrafairy) | 39 comments Hi,

I don't want to be picky and it doesnt really matter but I've noticed that my count for countries i've read in and the readerboard's count don't match up. I know that it's not seen everyday but the last edit to the reader board has been done since my last post. Basically I'm just wondering if some of my posts are invalid?

Thanks for clearing this up

Becky P- Tourist :)

Rhonda Lee Wunder | 143 comments I wonder if someone could help me. When I went to post my USA challenge, it wouldn't let me and it said I needed to add my e-mail address. Isn't there a way to post the info like the same way we do this discussion. I think it would be easier. At times, I have added my info and when I have come back it is not there.
Thanks Rhonda This is also the way for the World Challenge

The challenge itself would not require you to do that. It is probably something to do with the Goodreads site. I do know you have to have a valid email address on file to use Goodreads. Check your settings with Goodreads to make sure that nothing is missing.

Since it is timely for the movie coming out this weekend, the Orient Express breaks down near the town of Vinkovci (spelled Vincovci in the book), which is in modern-day Croatia. I'm looking forward to the movie.

message 198: by Nancy H (new)

Nancy H | 933 comments I just read the book Bon Voyage, My Love: Ticket to a Mixed Plate Paradise Bon Voyage, My Love Ticket to a Mixed Plate Paradise by Zee Huxley , and although it is set in the South Pacific on a fictional island, there is no specific country given anywhere in the book. I have looked at reviews and synopses, but can't find a mention of a country anywhere. Can I count this for the South Pacific in general, or since the island is fictional, does it not count at all?
Thanks.

After reading the rules and member's questions, my understanding is the Rogue Traveler challenge can be retroactive back to January 2018 for new members? If so, I'll post back to that point. Just wanted to double check so I follow the rules correctly. Thanks. :-)
