So is it o.k. to use islands like Sardinia, Sicily, Corsica, Balearic islands, Corfu or Crete as acceptable locations? I have checked Where we've been thread and I couldn't find these there. Thanks.

Sardinia and Sicily are Italy, you can't consider them in another way :/
The same thing for Corsica, it is France.

But then again Galapagos belong to Ecuador and they apparently do count as separate location. Also, I checked the Where we've been thread (2013) again and I did found Sicily (Italy), Madeira (Portugal), Svalbard (Norway), Canary Islands (Spain) and Hawaii (USA).


I'm sorry to be such a pain. I'm planning my books for 2014 and I have several set on Mediterranean islands (Mallorca, Sicily, Corfu and Crete). I'm fairly new to this challenge and I don't want to make mistakes. :)

I will accept them as separate, even though they are physically close to their mainland countries. Any place that is physically separate can be counted separately.

Diane answered you, mine was only an opinion because I am Italian and it is strange to see our two islands considered detached from the country (though they physically are).

Technically you can count it as either. I have it under the Middle East category, but you can count it as either on your personal list.

Hi. Am new to the group and want to participate in this challenge. I have a few questions though and apologies in advance if these questions are kind of repetitive, I just want to be sure before I embark on my journey. :)

1. Do I have to start my challenge from today or can I add books that I have read previously in 2014 for the yearly challenge?

2. And if I have to start counting books from the date of joining the challenge, when does the year end for me (considering that we are almost at the end of 2014), will it be 31st December 2014 or one year from the date of joining the challenge?

Hi Rhonda. To start your own thread click on the title link of your challenge (i.e. "USA Roadtrip"). At the top right of the column you will click on the link that says "New Topic". Your topic will be whatever you want to name your thread (i.e. "Diane's 2015 Reading Roadtrip"). You will enter your progress in the "comment" box.

Good question. One book per country counts toward the challenge. You are welcome to list regions within the country, but only one will be counted.

I took the challenge as a globetrotter

(3) Globetrotter (Hardest)
The rules are the same as for a Frequent Flyer or Trekker, BUT, you for each country you will need to read a books that is both set in the country AND written by an author from that country. You can use any author that is native to that country or has lived in that particular country for at least ONE YEAR.)

but ended up reading 3 (so far) 3 collections of short stories and 1 collection of poems (these can be found from my post https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...). Short stories and poems are written by native people but editors are Finnish. Does this disqualify me from being a globetrotter? Thought they could count since the original writers are native anyway.

How do short stories count? Some are published independently, some in collections, some collections have different authors and settings...a bit of a gray area.

This year I wanted experiment as a Rogue Traveler in AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 BOOKS ANNUAL CHALLENGE. But I found that point no. 9 of the 2016 challenge rules under link:

Have the challenge tracts been restricted to 3 for 2016 and 'Rogue Traveller' is no longer available? If 'Rogue Traveler' category is available, could I join it now? If so, how do I register myself? Will the books read from 1st January 2016 count for this? Could Historical fiction be used for this challenge?

The three should actually be five, I somehow managed to overlook it. Rogue Traveler is still available and you can join at any time by starting your own thread under this folder. You can count any books you have read in 2016. You may read from any genre. There are tons of historical fiction books that will fit the challenge.

Hi Viji, if you use the link https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group..., you can open your own thead by clicking on 'new topic' at the right upper corner. Everyone uses his or her own topic, and with each country you add, you add a new post. Just add a title (f.e. Viji Rogue Traveler 2016 or something like that) and start your post. You can look at other threads to get an idea.

That depends if you are continuing as a Circumnavigator or starting the challenge over in one of the other tracks. If you are continuing as a Circumnavigator rename it and continue in the same thread. If you are starting a new annual challenge, then start a new topic. Hope that helps.
