Home Shoppe 18 for books? Please be kidding! I thought they sell only "home" stuffs. My roomate did buy an awesome non-stick pot from there! :P

message 203: by Alka (new)

Alka | 56 comments Preferably from libraries. If not available, then from online stores like Flipkart and giftsmill or book shops like Midland and Reliance timeout which give discounts. I am in Delhi and there are many options available thankfully but in a smaller city like Bhopal for instance, options are limited.

Adam (adam_yamey) | 52 comments Blossom Books, Church Street
Bookworm, Shrungar Complex, off MG Road & in land off Brigade Road
Strand, Manipal Centre

All of these much better than Crossword on Residency Road

Greetings from Adam in London

flipkart was very economical just 6 months ago. I dont know what happened thereafter. I ordered 8 books for my son from Homeshop, 5 were delivered and 3 were out of stock. I never thought Enid Blytons would be out of stock! Since those were COD I didn't bother much.

I had been to bangalore recently and was disappointed with the crosswords store at Garuda mall.

Crosswords never has anything. Same here in Mumbai too. Pulp fiction and so called 'classics'. Too regular!

Ritika | 130 comments Hi.. can anyone suggest some good libraries in delhi?? I'm a member of the american centre lib (K.G. Marg, CP) but their fiction collection is quite disappointing.. same goes for british council, poor fiction collection.. want to take a break from buying books, my folks arent too happy with me :)

You should have checked out Landmark in Forum mall or Blossom Book house in Brigade Road when you visit Bangalore.

Yes, Col. As you had been to MG Road, you could have visited Blossoms at Church Street just 100mts from MG Road..

After getting used to online shopping for books, I just visit bookstores to check for the interesting books so that I can place the order.. :P.. So for me any bookstore would do.. :)

The only bookstore I still buy books is Blossoms.. You can't come out of blossoms without buying at least one book.. That is not the case with other bookstores at least for me..

Tim Byron (timsj) I recently discovered a wonderful second hand bookshop on Church St Inn in Bangalore called the Goobes Booke Republic. It has inspired me in some of the literacy work I am now doing - wrote about it in my blog http://wp.me/1Sdyx

which area do you live in? If convenient for you, there is a geeta bhavan library at hauz-khas. There is also a bookshop in Hauz khas market which gives books with a reading charge, so you need to buy a book and then sell it back to him (@ cost price - reading charge). In Delhi you can also opt for online libraries like bookmeabook.com, friendsofbooks.com etc. Hope this helped.

I bought effectively 21 books this weekend from Blossoms at Church Street and Bookworm at MG road. Bookworm is worth visiting. Blossoms will remain a favourite though. I will check out the one you mentioned Tim. Funny for Gubbe in Kannada means owl :) Don't know if that is intentional :)

Blossom is really Awesome and the have almost all new released books. Everything about it is awesome! When I'm inside its like a complete book world and it's location makes going to Brigade Road more wonderful. And since Corner House and also some aquarium is also nearby I really like going there.

Must be - there is a picture of the owl. 20 odd books - that is some appetite!!

message 221: by Aditya Joshi (new)

Aditya Joshi I'd been in Bangalore last week. Went down to M.G road. Blossoms is awesome. The rates aren't too good but they have got quite a good collection of old books in good quality. It's like a complete book store - properly sorted and categorized. Worth trying.

message 222: by Gopal (new)

Gopal (gopaliyer) If people are interested in online reading, u can read books online @ www.onread.com [txt, lit, epub, html are some of the formats available]

If folks are interested in downloading books then www.epubbud.com is another good source for books.

How is the service here, at Indiaplaza and uread?

message 228: by Gaurav (new)

Gaurav Agarwal (gauravagarwal) | 9 comments I buy from Indiaplaza. Their service might irritate you a bit in terms of delay, but they are priced way lower than flipkart. Book quality is also good. So since I have a pipeline of books waiting I dont mind the delay.

Anybody knows a good bookshop where they actually help you select books...sort of a recommendation etc based on what all you buy/read?

message 229: by Ritika (new)

Ritika | 130 comments U can get recommendations on goodreads.com..lol :)
Dont know any bookstores in Delhi where people recommend you books, they're mostly having trouble finding the ones you ask for only.. Midland in South Ex I find the best among all, they have a really good collection..

Apart from that, you can ask people on this forum for recommendations too.. most are pretty well read and all :)

In Crosswords, they have a separate shelf named, "Crossword Recommends".

But yeah, the best way is to get the recommendations here.. :D

Rosun Rajkumar (rosunningthemcha) | 868 comments I found this small little book store situated in raghuleela mall in Vashi (Navi Mumbai). You can even order sort of- write down your preferences and they will call you back when it is in store. The collection of books is not that bad either.

Agree..I get pretty good recos from Goodreads. But was just wishing to select books the traditional way at bookstore..where you can get to chitchat and get recos in person..wouldn't that be nice :)

Haven't been to Midland..will try it out..have to just sneak out of office :P

Crossword recommends are way to general and I always feel "sponsored" ... Goodreads recommendations and from reader's here is doing the trick for now :)

message 246: by Debolina (new)

Debolina Raja Im joining in quite late. But in case most of you haven't visited it yet, do visit the site www.homeshop18.com They really do have some awesome deals, much better than Flipkart too. I got a set of 20 books this Feb and the total bill was 4000-something!!! All brand new books, paperback and hardcover included, some even shipped in from abroad and sent to me. So do check that out!

message 247: by Anbu (last edited May 29, 2012 11:39PM) (new)

Anbu (anbutheone) | 4469 comments Homeshop18 and uread are the only two websites I haven't yet tried for buying books.. So far all the sites I've tried delivered the book on time in good quality. I had never faced any issues so far (touch wood). :)

So When it comes to buy book online, I just choose the website which offers the book at a lesser cost as all are delivering on time :)

My current favourites are infibeam.com and indiaplaza.com..

Flipkart became costly nowadays... I could get 20% off in the Strand book store in my office itself. Why would I buy a book online with 15-18% discounts only.. I don't understand their new concept.. Increasing the price then advertising more on TV..

message 248: by Ahtims (new)

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47118 comments Mod
Homeshop 18 is quite reasonable, but then I ordered 10 books for my son, and received only 6 (others were out of stock, though not mentioned so at the time of order). Fortunately I had opted for COD, so no hassles with credit card payback

message 249: by Debolina (new)

Debolina Raja Smitha: I guess they'll send you the remaining books too. This happened with me too, 02 of the books I ordered were out of stock. They got it shipped from the US and then sent it to me...

message 250: by Mayank (new)

Mayank Kumar www.junglee.com indexes results from many sites like homeshop18. indiaplaza, rightshopping etc and you can choose the site that is offering the lowest price. The site is owned by amazon, maybe the reason they dont list Flipkart results, but flipkart book are overpriced anyways.
