SOLVED. lonely girl in the woods, boy on a high wire [s]

I'm looking for a book, likely published in the 1960s or very early 1970s, about a girl (maybe an orphan or living with other relatives?) who spends lots of time in the woods. She meets a boy who strings a line high up, and walks on it. They become friends. I think perhaps she gets a pony and learns tricks on it. At the end his troop comes by. I mostly remember an amazing sense of wonder (and loneliness) in it.

On the friendship; a growing up story. She's on her own a lot, meets the boy in the woods, learns some skills.
