Ivan | 43 comments Laughton and Dietrich in Witness for the Prosecution and Selected Plays are wonderful; a terrific film (if not faithful to the source material).

A Murder Is Announced was the last one I read - thoroughly enjoyed every minute. The one I read just prior was The Murder of Roger Ackroyd and Narmin is correct - any Agatha Christie fan should read it at least once!

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) Right you are, Ivan. The Murder of Roger Ackroyd is a classic.

Another Christie character that you might like is Harley Quin.......she wrote several short stories about this man of mystery and they are very different from her usual detective. The Mysterious Mr. Quin is a collection of these stories.

I just finished reading "Ordeal by Innocence" this past week.

The setting, characters, and mystery were satisfying as usual - not her best by a long shot, but it gave me the "Christie" atmosphere I love and was craving.

Have to say that the romance aspect was a bit ... far-fetched? or just rather sudden (even though it was predictable).

All in all, glad I read it. Onwards! :)

Reading through old posts, just realized I still haven't read the 'Elephant' one. Must order it...

I lovvve Mr. Quin! Some of her letters indicate that Ms. Christie herself was pretty hooked on this character. :) Do you have any favourite Quin stories? Mine, I think, is the Harlequin Tea Set - clever, witty, with the perfect twist. :)

I really like all the Quin stories..... and don't you just love Mr. Satherwaite?.....Christie used him in a couple of the Poirot books as well.

I really like Ordeal by Innocence. But I agree it wasn't one of her best and the romance was sudden. I feel like alot of her books have a strange sudden romances. It was still enjoyable. I just loved how it focused on how it didn't matter who was guilty because it was the innocent who suffered. As long as the murderer's idenity was hidden even those innocent were suspected.

Melissa (mrsmelissa) I am making my way through, 'Death Comes at the End'.
I went hunting for BookCrossing books and found it in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, Australia. Its BCID is 143-5906164. It's a little different to her usual gaff, as it's set in ancient Egypt.
I was planning to do a wild release within the UAE but I'm off to Canada in July and would be happy to do a controlled release to a fellow Agatha Christie fan...

message 108: by Annina (new)

Annina I'm reading Murder in Mesopotamia right now.
I really don't have an opinion of it 'cause I just started it and the murder just happened.

message 109: by Daga (new)

Daga | 44 comments I had a long (way too long) break in AC reading so I desperately need to read something by her. I was tempted to join the monthly reading as I like the Murder at Vicarage, however I didn't have time to go through it again. Then I thought of reading something I've never read before and I recalled having bought (ages ago) Black Coffee: Novelisation so tonight I'm going to start with it yay :D

I just received a set of audiobooks of her works so I'm going to listen to the books and try to catch up.

I am in the middle of Study In Scarlet (Sherlock Holmes) again---it's my 4th time)))) I just love it. And I'm looking for all miss Marple cases in one volume. I hope I will find it:))
I'm so bad with comps--I do not know how to add other books that I've read (not only from this site)And I'm not sure that I can tell the exact number....How do people know? Do they count????

message 112: by Daga (new)

Daga | 44 comments Alla wrote: "And I'm looking for all miss Marple cases in one volume. I hope I will find it:))..." I'm not sure there is one, I know that there is one pretty new with short stories Miss Marple and Mystery: The Complete Short Stories.
Alla wrote: And I'm not sure that I can tell the exact number....How do people know? Do they count???? I guess some people just know ;) I myself lost track of it a while ago. I always promise to myself to make order with AC books and eventually find out how many and so but I never do that. Well, then every once in a while I get a book which I haven't read before and it's suuuuuuuuch a treat!

message 120: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine (saanichlori) | 2589 comments I just finished "Curtain" - this was fun for me, as I read "The Mysterious Affair at Styles" earlier this summer, and they both (the first and the final Hercule Poirot) take place in the same house. Curtain was very good and a surprise ending.

message 121: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. | 4766 comments Mod
I thought that the last book was in a house or somewhere they had been before!

I'm listening to our book of the month The Sittaford Mystery. It's not the normal narration but a dramatization with lots of different actors and sound effects. It kind of reminds me of when I went to the Hollywood museum they had a room where each person made a sound effect and they put them all together. I'm trying to think of what object would really make the sound of boots walking in snow, etc. Kind of fun.

Maria (SilverBlaze) | 1 comments "Appointment with Death" ... Watched its film first ... It's quite different from the book ...

message 123: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) I just finished Murder is Easy and enjoyed it. It is not a series book and the protagonist is a retired policeman. The book reminds me of one of the Marple books, What Mrs. McGillicuddy Saw in which an elderly woman suspects a murder and then she is killed before she can report it.

It's okay but I don't think it's one of her best - it's slower moving than many of the others.

message 125: by Malavika (new)

Malavika | 2 comments This isn't a Christie book, but I recently finished reading "The 8:55 to Baghdad" in which the author traces Agatha Christie's 3,000-mile train ride on the Orient Express from London to Baghdad, stopping in cities and countries that had some significance to her books. What's particularly interesting is that the journey took place just before the start of the Iraq invasion. If you're interested in Christie, her life and enjoy a good travel memoir, I recommend this book!

message 126: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks for the recommendation, Malavika!

The 8.55 to Baghdad

Mat | 11 comments Death comes at the end I was so proud of myself when I guess what had happened 
Although that was the most terrible reading experience I’ve ever had. I found these book in a library and… last 40 pages was missing! I was so angry, of course I ended my copy about midnight so there was no possible to find other one.

message 128: by [deleted user] (new)

That would be awful! I hope you found another copy.

message 129: by Mat (last edited Oct 14, 2011 08:16AM) (new)

Mat | 11 comments Of course!
Otherwise I would be posting from psychiatric hospital (or prison if I had found out who had lost pages) :)

(Ok, I have problems with grammar – it was correct sentence?)

message 130: by [deleted user] (new)

(or prison, if I had found out who had the missing pages)

This is better grammar, but I certainly understood what you meant! :D Nothing so infuriating as finding a library book that someone has deliberately damaged.

message 138: by Voula (new)

Voula (otl1987) (otl1987) I recently finished "Third Girl". It was a while since I last read one of Agatha Christie's books, and I had forgotten how much fun she is! I love her sense of humour and I love how she 's not afraid to describe a cruel scene. She reminded once again why she's so popular still and why she will be. I love her!

I just finished The Man in the Brown Suit. It was... different. I liked it, but it definitely doesn't come close to my favorites! I gave it 3 stars.

I thought so too, Smurf! Still good, but definitely more "thriller" than Christie's other work.

message 150: by Sharla (new)

Sharla There is also an old movie based on And Then There Were None starring Barry Fitzgerald and Walter Huston and directed by Rene Clair. Billed as dark comedy, I thought it was pretty well done if you like old hollywood.
