Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments right now im reading the girl with a pearl earring and i love it. the simplicity of the writing is just soothing. and i am in love with historical fiction involving women. just how they led their lives in the past fascinates me!

message 102: by kate (new)

kate (katelucia) Lauren, I find it fascinating too!

And to Anastasia and Ashley, I totally get where both of you are coming from. I do it too. I think I've just exhausted the Jessica/Marcus thing to last me a few more years.

I am sad to say that I thought I would like Alice a lot more than I do. I can't wait to be done with it. =(

I'm LOVING twilight so far..i sat in my car for an hour today waiting for my boyfriend to get done with class (because it was too cold in the building for my liking) and an hour went by sooo quickly..i had to snap out of my daze. I'll agree..its simple..not astounding literature..but it sure is intriguing and a good "breather"..

I agree with you Ashley..it is exactly like cleansing your palate. I definitely need a book like this to get my mind off of scholarly things.

Anastasia..i will definitely have to tell you what i think as i get into the book further.

message 104: by Spencer (new)

Spencer (spencerafreeman) Oh no, kate! Alice is making you feel like that? That's not good. I'm on about pg 30 and I'm still unbiased about it... but if I'm not diggin it by pg 100 then I dunno what I'm going to do.
I always hate giving up on books and not finishing them (weird ocd thing), but sometimes you just have to chuck it and quickly move on to something else to rid you of the bad taste the last book left. Coincidentally, that's why I bought AIW in the first place, haha.

message 105: by kate (new)

kate (katelucia) I thought it would be something to just be fantastical and fun. I won't give away why I'm not thoroughly enjoying it. But I don't hate it, and I'm only 40pgs away from the end. So I will finish it.

Blah. Maybe it's just me though. =)

message 106: by kate (new)

kate (katelucia) I'm starting on Women in Love for about the fifth time. I've always enjoyed the beginning but somehow I've just never gotten past page 40 or so. =/

Wish me luck!

Can't wait til this weekend when I can OFFICIALLY start EL&IC!!

message 107: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) After months of sitting on it [second chapter was a little too boring:] I have finished There's a (Slight) Chance I Might Be Going to Hell: A Novel of Sewer Pipes, Pageant Queens, and Big Trouble. I DID make it to the library today and they gave me a card [no one told them of my escapades in San Diego I guess:]! I started Rant: An Oral Biography of Buster Casey about an hour ago.

I loved Sloppy Firsts, etc. Okay, the fourth book was kind of pushing it, but I have the fifth book pre-ordered.

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
yay for getting a library card!!

also...do tell about your escapades in San Diego!! :)

message 109: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) Well, it involved getting a library card in one county and moving to another without returning the books and getting a new library card there [apparently they aren't all connected or communicating in any way...:] and then moving without returning books, repeat. I lost all but one in all my moves and it was a terrible book. Haha. I left it in my car when it got towed to a junk yard after I crashed into a tree.

message 110: by Janet (new)

Janet Justine I am so glad that someone liked the Sloppy Firsts series as much as I do!
And everyone, I am all about the nice, easy reads. I get more into the in depth when I am in school but during the summer I just let go and read a whole bunch of "chick lit." Haha.

message 111: by Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner), The Founding Bookworm (new)

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
haha thats so funny..minus the crashing into the tree...one time at my library there was some sort of weird system malfunction or something and I took books out and I never took them back..and then I went again expecting a fine..but nothing..so i happily kept the books.

Janet..sometimes I have to do that..after reading such intense books at school..read a bunch of chick lit..and then i feel like i can move on.

message 112: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments since we're talking about chick lit... ive never gotten into it.. anyone suggest anything?

message 113: by kate (new)

kate (katelucia) Summer Sisters!!

message 114: by Janet (new)

Janet Anything by Nicholas Sparks! Love him!!

message 115: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments Well, I've read almost every Sparks book already. I think I read all of the in high school. Except that one that just came out, The Lucky One. I'm just waiting for it to come out in paperback.

message 116: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments And Kate, I just ordered Women in Love, by D.H.L.! :)

message 117: by kate (new)

kate (katelucia) Yay! I need more time to read! This week has been killer!

message 118: by Janet (new)

Janet Lauren,
If you look at all my read books that are under my summer reads, most of those are chick lit because I always read chick lit in the summer! I'll try to pick out my favorites sometime and let you know!

message 121: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 143 comments just finished the secret life of bees..now going to start our group read.

message 122: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments Did you like the Secret Life of Bees, Jessica? I read it a few weeks ago and it was okay. Wasn't as good as I was hoping... I wanted to know more about what would happen to her later in life.

message 123: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) I just finished The Thirteenth Tale. I wasn't crazy about it. Maybe I hyped it up too much in my head with all the great things I heard about it?

I'm now reading Good Omens and it is sooooo much better. When I finish this tomorrow or the next day I'm starting Blindness and then East of Eden. I could keep going. My whole November is already planned out, bookwise.

message 124: by Emma (new)

Emma Reading The Princess Bride and Gun, Germs, and Steel for fun and Spinoza and Hume for school.

message 125: by Heather (new)

Heather (andshewontsleep) I finally finished Dracula a couple of days ago. I really couldn't get into it that much, but I am glad to say that I've read it now.
I just got my copy of Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close at the library yesterday, and have been reading it all morning. So far, I am liking it so much more than Everything is Illuminated. It's such an interesting book!

message 126: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments I just finished Snow Flower & the Secret Fan by Amy Tan and WOW! It was soooo good. I usually read historical fiction about women, love, and royalty. This one was about Chinese women, footbinding, and friendship. It was just amazing. I honestly recommend it to every woman to read.

message 127: by Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner), The Founding Bookworm (new)

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
I heard Amy Tan is pretty good! I remember my hs english teacher loving her.

message 128: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments Opps. Snow Flower & the Secret Fan is by Lisa See, not Tan. Hehe. But I do have a few books by Tan. I can't wait to read those too! =)

so..what should I read?? haha

message 131: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) Reading Everything is Illuminated while you all read EL&IC.
Jamie, I definitely recommend this if you haven't already read it...But I think you have enough new books to choose from!

message 133: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) I watched it a few years ago. I'll probably have to watch it again after reading it.

i loved it..so i'm really excited to read the book..and then rewatch the movie as well.

I just finished Sense and Sensibility. Actually enjoyed it. I was expecting not too, because Emma wasn't too great for me, but I am guessing that is because I really didn't like the title character.
Just started Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close.

message 136: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (bookworm1987) I FINALLY finished "DARK VICTORY the LIFE OF BETTE DAVIS" it took me about a month and a half to read..interesting but VERY long.

I'm currently reading Eat,Pray,Love by Elizabeth Gilbert.

message 137: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (bookworm1987) Tami why didn't you like EMMA? That is my favorite Austen novel..I wasn't too fond of Sense and Sensibility (I loved the movie though...) I'm going to have to re-read Austen novels..

message 138: by Ashley (last edited Nov 09, 2008 11:15AM) (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) I finished reading Breaking Dawn last night. I am now reading Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin.

message 139: by Caiti Casey (new)

Caiti Casey Spiess (mrssteven) I just finished Breaking Dawn tonight. I started the first chapter of Moonlight Sun, but since it is only on the internet it makes it inconvenient to read. I'm also reading The Places in Between (not sure who the author is--not that I really care) for my English class.

message 140: by Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner), The Founding Bookworm (new)

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
i haven't started any of the other Twilight books due to the fact that I read Twilight too fast and didn't do any homework at all while reading it. not good for my gpa. haha..but i plan on reading them all over break. what did you think of breaking dawn? I heard alot of people say they didn't really like it..

message 141: by Caiti Casey (new)

Caiti Casey Spiess (mrssteven) Ha, I actually had to postpone reading the third book until after a couple of tests so I would actually study. I really liked it, I also heard that many didn't but I thought it was a good ending. You could tell that Meyer got lazy, but can you really blame her coming out with "The Host" just before that and three little guys running around her house and a husband? It would not be easy giving birth to a book. But yeah over all I enjoyed it, it was refreshingly different. But I am an odd one. You'll have to read it for yourself and let me know what you thought of it over all.

message 142: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
Lauren,

This is a ways past your post, but to answer your question, I guess it is because I really didn't like Emma. She seemed to be pretty selfish, and even though she would berate herself for not being a good friend, she never did anything to change it.

In Sense and Sensibility, even though there are characters I really didn't like, they weren't the main one, so I could get past it. I also enjoyed the story more.

message 143: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) I was reading Inkheart, but couldn't get into it. I got tired of forcing myself to read it, so I started reading American Psycho (I'm devoting the second half of the month to group reads) instead.

message 144: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments Justine! I just got American Psycho in the mail from PBS!!! We should read this together!

message 145: by April (new)

April | 39 comments Well I'm on page 338 of Twilight. Gosh, I've got to hurry up. My friend already ordered me a ticket to the premiere next Thurs night. So I gotta reeeeeeeeaaaaaadddddd!

message 146: by Caiti Casey (new)

Caiti Casey Spiess (mrssteven) What premiere are you going to?!?

message 147: by Spencer (new)

Spencer (spencerafreeman) ooh april! how did you friend manage to get tickets so early??! lucky... if you're like me when reading Twilight, you'll be done in no time!

message 148: by April (new)

April | 39 comments She logged on to fandango.com or something like that and was able to buy tickets in advance. Everyone around here have been talking about it so i'm sure it will be a total sale out.

Caiti: Twilight Movie Premiere it's comes out a week from tomorrow at midnight.

message 149: by Caiti Casey (new)

Caiti Casey Spiess (mrssteven) Oh sorry I meant is it a big one? Or just at a local movie theater?

message 150: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) Lauren,
I finished American Psycho already! I didn't check this thread in time.

So...I finished American Psycho last night and now I'm about halfway through Neverwhere: A Novel.
