If you want the most out of the series you should start with Fantasy Lover, and read the Dream Hunter books in with the Dark Hunter books since they overlap characters and some story line. I've seen a few different listings of reading order including Fantasy Lover being listed first. Fantasy Lover and In Other Worlds are listed and not listed. Since Julian is in many books it does make sense for his book to be first, why else would Kryian go to his place for help, DH's don't trust many people and Kyrian trusts him.

Someone earlier mentioned Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. That is my all time favorite book. Whenever I need a pick me up, I grab that book and let Jamie Fraser take me away.....

ooooh - I dunno. Yes, each book was better than the last until River Marked (the very last book). I could BARELY get through this for some reason. I thought I would love it because it had plenty of Adam, but ugh - it was brutal reading for me.
This is a tough question because for me, the first book is rarely the best. so it's not the first book that "hooks" me into a series.
Having said that, my favorite PNR series are, in no particular order (I even put an asterisk next to the books where the first book was NOT as good as the rest) - and yes, I know some of these are obvious:
Nalini Singh's Psy-Changeling and Guild Hunter
*Kim Harrison - the Hollows
*Ilona Andrews - Kate Daniels
*Lara Adrian - Midnight Breed
*Gena Showalter - Lords of the Underworld
*J.R. Ward - Black Dagger Brotherhood.
Karen Chance - Cassie Palmer/Dorina Basarab
Stacia Kane - Downside Ghosts (LOVE this series)
Patricia Briggs - Mercy Thompson (until River Marked)
Jordan Castillo Price - Psycops (M/M PNR)
Gini Koch - "Kitty" Kat
There are more that I've liked, but these are the ones I've liked the most.

I agree! I read the books in order (magic burns first) and probably wouldn't have bothered with them at all except a friend pushed them on me so I felt I had to read them. Now I'm hooked. I usually prefer series that take place in the normal world just with a twist. This series is set in its own world but my friend was right it was amazing. And now I feel more open to reading these types of books.
I also want to put a good word in for the Werecats series by Rachel Vincent, again I started with the first book but each book got better and better.

Dead Witch Walking is the first in the series, it's a little slow at first. But by the middle it picks up a lot and then you're hooked. One thing that makes this series so good is the characters, you really get attached to them. Action, magic, sexy elves. Anything a girl could ask for. :D
