quickly and LOVED it! This series just keeps getting better. If you're in the mood for a suspenseful book-gripper, try this series.

Kaye - there were a few things that really bugged me. The sister-in-law character was just unbelievably nasty and the main character, who is the SIL Boss(!) just rolled over and took it in the name of "family". It made me want to throw the book across the room - not what I look for in a cozy. Also, the main detective was unreasonably antagonistic immediately after walking on the scene, really over-the-top. I found it to be completely unbelievable and really leant nothing to the story development.
I want to like the "good guys" in a cozy and 3 of the biggies were weak, annoying and aggressively nasty. However, there were things I did like - the quilting background, the love interest, Buster and some of the other employees. I'm told the second and third book are better, so I might try the next in the series at some point in the future.
I just finished
. What a fun read with lots of humor, great characters and an impressive plot. Plus the author is from my home town of Colorado Springs, CO.
Tonight I finished "Who's Death Is It Anyway?
by; Eliz. D. Squire. I had wanted to like this series because it is set in my home state. Actually in "my back yard". I also researched Ms. Squire, the author, and found many admirable facts about her, such as she was the first mystery writer to be inducted into the NC Literary Hall of Fame. She also thrived in a writers world with dyslexia. But, I just didn't care for the two "Peaches Dann" books that I read. I probably won't be reading more of these, which saddens me.
Just finished
The Azalea Assault. Another 'meh'. I liked the gardening backdrop and the characters were great - but the story itself felt like it just meandered all over the place.

But I have no interest in gardening, which was a big strike right upfront. Have been wondering what possessed me to get this one in the first place!

I know that the cozy genre's leading sleuth is suppose to be a non-professional. But...I just finished one called "Dog On It'
by Spencer Quinn that is so close to a cozy that I had to consider it one. The story actually has two main sleuths. One is a pro,Bernie, (P.I.) one is NOT. So, I am going with Chet, (non professional sleuth) so I can tag this one a cozy. I loved this little book. I was wishing I had a sequel to it on my shelves so i could just keep on reading. I enjoyed the story, the charachters, (the mystery was a bit different in this one,in a good way IMO.) and the interaction between Chet & Bernie is a total delight to read about. I know this sounds predjudiced, but my reading tastes don't usually lean to male authors.Sometimes heavy on violence and /or language. This one was a delightful pleasure to read.(some language in this one)And for all the Dog Lovers out there in Goodreads Land.....Chet is an absolute, adorable , loveable, endearing Dog. I was conserned that this would be corny or "childish" but not so. Very entertaining read.

Kari wrote: "I really enjoy this series too and the second one was just as good."Thanks for letting me know. I was so hoping the first one was not just a lucky start.

If you are doing the "Around the USA Challenge" this one would fit for the state of Nevada. If it won't fit into any of your challenges, just remember, it is a fast, fun read so it shouldn't put much pressure on you for time.

I liked both book one and book two as well :) They are great on audiobook btw

I have never tried an audio book, but I bet this one would be great on audio.
Kari wrote: "I really enjoy this series too and the second one was just as good."I really liked the first one, but didn't think the 2nd one was as good. I have #3 around here someplace.

LOUISA AND THE COUNTRY BACHELOR by Anna Maclean (Historical Mystery)This is the second Louisa May Alcott mystery where we read about Louisa’s life as a young woman before she became a famous author. Louisa and her family are vacationing with cousins in New Hampshire. Their rural village suffers a tragedy when a young laborer is found dead, pushed down a ravine. His sister believes one of the shopkeepers killed him so as to buy their piece of land by the railroad track, but Louisa isn’t so easily convinced. Their neighbors harbor secrets, and all isn’t what it seems in this sleepy little town. The questions build as she investigates, especially when the local sheriff suspects her close friend of being the murderer. To prove his innocence, Louisa probes into people’s lives, not realizing she’s putting her own safety at stake. Another delightful installment in a charming series.
NORWAY TO HIDE by Maddy Hunter (Mystery)
This entry in Maddy Hunter’s Passport to Peril series is just as amusing as the other stories in her repertoire. You’ll smile as you read about the antics of tour guide Emily Andrews and her senior citizens on their trip to Scandinavia. The Iowan group is dismayed to be thrown in with a bunch of Floridians, even more so when a guest turns up dead. What secrets is this troupe hiding that they’d kill to keep quiet? Norway to Hide tale will keep you guessing until the final clue.
WHAT ANGELS FEAR by C.S. Harris (Historical Mystery)
This first title in the Sebastian St. Cyr mystery series will hook you and reel you in. Accused of a heinous rape/murder, Viscount Devlin flees the authorities and takes refuge in 1811 London where he seeks to clear his name. With various allies to help him, he unravels a scheme involving French spies, political intrigue, blackmail, and greed. Evocative setting details will have you believing you’re in fog-shrouded London as you follow the hero’s adventures into disreputable alleyways and slummy inns as he searches for the killer before the man strikes again. Devlin can’t even trust his own family who harbors their own damaging secrets. At stake is the life of a woman he once loved and who loves him still. Can he unmask the villain, save the Regency, and avoid the hangman’s noose? Once you read this book, you’ll want to find more stories in Harris’s engaging series.

Hide and Snoop and really enjoyed it. Have liked all the Odelia Grey books. Camryn Mannheim had bought some rights to these books a few years ago and was going to do a TV show based on them, but that apparently fell through.
This is not a free Kindle version but it is a chance to win a FREE signed copy of a book that I think is worth reading. http://linerencemag.com/2012/08/buyin...

Glad to hear you enjoyed this one. I have it on kindle and have been putting off reading it.

I first read this as "a dreadful read/listen ... and couldn't figure out why you said the reader was perfect LOL
*Note to self: SLOW DOWN while reading posts*

I added this one to my TBR list also. Sounds intriging.
I finished Trouble in Mudbug
- a little more sexually explicit than I was expecting, but I really enjoyed it.
The last two books that I have read are both cozies:Deadly Threads by Jane K. Cleland and
Dying for a Dateby Cindy Sample.
Although I like to read a series in its proper sequence, I read Deadly Threads and it is the 6th in a series. It wasn't hard to follow the story although I'm sure that if I had read the first 5 books I would have known the major players better.
Dying for a Date was the first in a series.
Both books were good but I liked Deadly Threads the best and I will go back and read the rest of the books in order.
I just finished Blood Bath & Beyond. It was a bit too chick-lit for my taste, but it is a transition book from a chick-lit series (all the same characters, but they've moved from paranormal romance series to a new mystery series). I'll read the next one though - this one had a sneak peek at the end of the next book and it sounded good.
I just finished Duplicity Dogged the Dachshund by Blaize Clements. Although the story was well-written and the main character was great, the violence and animal cruelty turned me off. I would not expect a book titled this way to be so dark. Will probably not read another by this writer.

Just finished "Shadows At The Spring Show" by Lea Wait. A little more interesting than the first one that I read but I am still having a difficult time staying "involved" in the story. May not continue following these unless one falls into my lap. (freebie or ubs at .50)
DonnaCarol wrote: "Abbey wrote: "I just finished Duplicity Dogged the Dachshund by Blaize Clements. Well, I'll say ENJOYED. Ms. Clement passed away last year and the last book she wrote came out earlier this year. Her son is supposed to continue writing the books, so I'll reserve judgment on future books.

"What Melodie said. Although I don't remember any animal cruelty (and I couldn't finish Calamity Jane b/c they tried to hurt an animal), these definitely aren't lighthearted, or humorous. I'd call them melancholy cozies...
I just finished Going, Going, Gone by Phoebe Atwood Taylor. An oldie but a goodie... written and set during WW2 on Cape Cod.
I just finished
It was pretty good, but a lot of banter in it. It seemed like it just dragged it out.
Finished State of the Onion last night. A few things bothered me, but I liked it enough to give the next one a go.
I finished Sprinkle with Murder and then read 'Scuse Me While I Kill This Guy, the first in yet another new-to-me series. Has anyone else read this one? I'm trying to decide if I'm the only one who thinks this book -- about a family of assassins -- was laugh-out-loud funny :)I just started The Baker Street Letters, and I like it -- so far!
