I didn't feel as strongly, but yeah, I'm hoping this is not the direction the series is going to head in - but more a one-time departure. The spy thing is just way too big a stretch. (Still well written though) This is one I'll never pick up to re-read. But I've always really loved this series and I genuinely like the author, so I'll look for the next one with my fingers crossed.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Just finished Liver Let Die (A Clueless Cook Mystery #1) by Liz Lipperman . Well, I didn't love it. But I didn't hate it either. The protagonist didn't come across very consistently - acting timid and meek one minute and throwing very smart sassy and sarcastic around the next. The main plot was transparent and the secondary one only slightly less so. Still, the rest of the characters were engaging and likeable, and perhaps in the next book the main character will find her place. I won't be against reading the next one to see if the series improves.

Sallie(GeorgiaGirl) (shuga) | 217 comments I just finished A Charmed Death (A Bewitching Mystery, #2) by Madelyn Alt ..3*s...I liked it - it didnt wow me but the characters are starting to grow on me...it's a typical who done it mystery but I liked it anyway.

Julie | 22 comments I just finished Death by Darjeeling and really enjoyed the start to this series. I've recently read the first of a few different older series by several authors and was getting discouraged by the "hard detached" type of character. I was glad I tried them and would have enjoyed them much more without the "relationship hangups" that they had. I'm looking forward to Childs other books and trying other authors that have characters that are easier to relate to. My next is Death on Demand.

Linda Gordon (linda_hengerer) | 1 comments I finished Make, Take, Murder (Kiki Lowenstein Scrap-n-Craft Mystery, #4) by Joanna Campbell Slan by Joanna Campbell Slan. Very good mystery which is solved by the heroine's knowledge of scrapbooking. Also, tips on scrapbooking in the novel. Love the series; as it grows, the themes become deeper - this one dealt with domestic violence.

Just a word of warning - Death on Demand has a bit of relationship hang ups - but it's only in the first book and completely gone in the second - so don't let that deter you from what a lot of us find to be a rock solid, enjoyable series! :)

bella (thespiceflows) I just finished Curiosity Thrilled the Cat (Magical Cats, #1) by Sofie Kelly by Sofie Kelly. I really liked it, and the cats were just adorable. Will definitely be reading the second book in the series soon.

Thanks Jennifer for the encouragement. I actually finished Death On Demand this morning and it was very good. The heroine had a better relationship with her man than some of the ones I read this week. I read three mysteries by different authors that painted their heroines as relationship-avoiding, tough, self-sufficient business women. I'm glad I read a couple that gave their girls a happier lifestyle. I look forward to reading the others in this series.

I love mysteries and would like to try new authors. I like humorous ones and/or romantic suspense and ones that include recipes (like Mott-Davidson). If anyone has suggestions for other authors that you recommend, please give me names and why you enjoy them.
Thanks!

Nell | 1223 comments You have come to the right place! :) You'll find lots of new authors just by reading the comments posted on this thread. I'm reading a Domestic Diva mystery by Krista Davis that includes recipes. Two other mysteries with recipes that come to mind are Katherine Hall Page and Joanne Fluke (whose newest books get mixed reviews). For a list of culinary mysteries, check out www.cozy-mystery.com - it's one of the theme mystery categories.

Nell | 1223 comments Finished The Diva Haunts the House (A Domestic Diva Mystery, #5) by Krista Davis The Diva Haunts the House by Krista Davis. Read the first two in this series so I knew the recurring characters. This one has a niece, her friends and their parents among other new characters. There's a roster of haunted house helpers in the front that helps you keep it straight. Still lots of folks to keep up with. Good mystery with some Halloween elements. The contrasting letters to Sophie and Natasha that started each chapter were more distracting than entertaining in this one. A lot of the chapters ended on cliffhangers and I just wanted to keep reading the mystery.

I'm glad to know it's not just me. I do so love both series, but this one I honestly put down about half way through. I'll go back and finish it soon, but it just doesn't do much for me. And that makes me sad.

Rachel Cotterill (rachelcotterill) Just finished The Quiche of Death, I really didn't like it (ended up skimming rather than really reading) and won't be reading any more in this series.

message 3569: by Maurie (new)

Maurie (mauriek) | 11 comments I finished Fleece Navidad (A Knitting Mystery, # 6) by Maggie Sefton and enjoyed it for the most part. I liked the interaction between characters, the diversity of characters and the quick dialogue. The mystery part though was very obvious from the beginning, and was dragged out for too long, so that part was disappointing.
I also finished Witch Way to Murder (Ophelia & Abby, #1) by Shirley Damsgaard and really enjoyed it. A page turner, lots of potential suspects, interesting characters and a protagonist that develops through the story. Look forward to reading more in this series.
Lastly I started Murder Past Due (A Cat in the Stacks Mystery, #1) by Miranda James and ended up not finishing it after getting a quarter of the way in. It just didn't hold my interest and wasn't consistent.

I read the Ophelia & Abby books and was pretty ambivalent about them until the last one. It was excellent! I always liked Abby, but never cared for Ophelia until the last one.

message 3571: by Susan (new)

Susan Just finished Eggs Benedict Arnold. It was just OK. The members of the Cackelberry Club spend a lot of time being snarky about a rival and seemed to uncover very few clues that would allow the reader to discover the killer.

Beth Amos | 5 comments Just finished The Diva Haunts the House (A Domestic Diva Mystery, #5) by Krista Davis and enjoyed it, though I found it hard to keep track of the many characters and kept thinking the dog, Daisy, was a person at times. Well written otherwise and loved all the diva tips.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Just finished Maids of Misfortune (Victorian San Francisco Mystery #1) by M. Louisa Locke . I'll probably read the next one, but won't rush out to buy it - mainly because I think when I stared reading this book I wasn't in the mood for it, so it felt as though it dragged a bit and took forever to finish.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Whipped through Triple Shot (Maggy Thorsen) by Sandra Balzo this afternoon. I love this series and I love the main character - someone I'd love to be friends with. The plot(s) kept me guessing all the way to the end too. I really hope she keeps on with this series!

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Just finished Who Do, Voodoo? by Rochelle Staab . Great first book! Really loved the lore behind the plot and really found the whole book interesting. Good characters with room to grow (although I found the mom to be silly and annoying). I look forward to book 2.

Lisa Malmquist | 225 comments Just finished Liver Let Die, by Liz Lipperman which was cute. And Skating around the Law by Joelle Charbonneau, enjoyed this one as well. These are both first in new series books. I'd be interested in reading the next in either one!

Pretty much my opinion. I usually like this series, especially the Halloween one, but the Thanksgiving one just gave me a headache when I read it!

message 3591: by Katherine (new)

Katherine Finished A Peach of a Murder A Peach of a Murder A Fresh-Baked Mystery by Livia J. Washburn I really enjoyed it because I can relate so well to the protagonist and her cohorts being a retired teacher of a certain age. While I am not widowed many of my retired teacher friends are or are otherwise alone so I can even superimpose my friends on the characters without a problem-->LOL

message 3592: by Carrie (new)

Maurie (mauriek) | 11 comments I just finished The Trouble With Witches (Ophelia & Abby, #3) by Shirley Damsgaard and really enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series. Including the second book which the library didn't have...I had to skim over little bits of this book to not get to much information about the previous one. I see a trip to the bookstore in my near future...

Kaye (momgee) | 862 comments Finished Envious Casca by Georgette Heyer last night and really enjoyed it. If you like Agatha Christie and have not read Heyer's mysteries, I would highly recommend her books. She's probably more known for her regency romance books but her mysteries are really great.

I just finished reading Royal Bloodonly three days after I started reading it. That definitely indicates I enjoyed it! Maybe not my absolute favorite of The Royal Spyness Mysteries, but pretty close.

Nell | 1223 comments Kaye wrote: "Finished Envious Casca by Georgette Heyer last night and really enjoyed it. If you like Agatha Christie and have not read Heyer's mysteries, I would highly recommend her books. She's probably more ..."

I'm a fan of Heyer's too. I've read several of her mysteries and this one is in my TBR. I started Duplicate Death on my Kindle a couple of days ago. Her mysteries are clever with wry comments about society of the time. She wrote about a dozen mysteries.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Last night, I finished To Catch a Leaf (A Flower Shop Mystery #12) by Kate Collins . A very good addition to a series that gets steadily better with each book. I still think her cousin is way more annoying than entertaining - nobody is truly that stupid. But the cast of characters are fun and the plot was good - enough red herrings to keep me from guessing until the end. I'm looking forward to the next one.
