What Cozy Did You Just Finish Reading??? (Archive)
Thanks for your input on the two series by Victoria Laurie, Melodie. I can see the potential for silliness in the "Ghost Hunters" series, which is why I've decided to reserve judgment until after I've read at least one more book in the series.

I space the books out so I onlyy read a few a year so as not to go throughthem too quickly.
I even chuckle out loud during some of the antics, and that's highly unusual for me.
I finsihed
a few days ago. Very enjoyable read...it's the second in the Fresh Baked series by Livia J. Washburn. It has warm fuzzy relationships without being too sappy...which I appreciate.

Between the "text talk" and the "bullet points" it was enough to get me to NEVER read another in this series!

And the mother is an argument for matricide.... or at least a smack upside the head... Ugh!

I got tired of the protag being such a klutz so quit reading that one, Jennifer.I just finished
and
. I enjoyed both of them (both series are good, imho).

I just finished Frozen Stiff
and loved it!!! This is one of my new favorite series. I can't wait for the next one!

I recently finished Scared Stiff, too. Great read!
thank you for the reminder, maria, to re-read all of the dorothy gilman books that i have. Maria wrote: "Just finished The Tightrope Walker by Dorothy Gilman. Good read, not her best. Probably even a little more cozy than some of her other works. Nice way to spend the afternoon."
thank you stephen. i shall go looking for all the mrs pollifax books. Stephen wrote: "Mrs. Pollifax and the Second Thief, by Dorothy Gilman.

I just finished
. I bought it because the cover made me laugh. The book was good, read it in one sitting yesterday.
Read Murder Most Maine by Karen MacInerney
. This is the third in the series. The mystery in this one was easy for me to figure out. I knew who and why about mid-way through. The protagonist was certain that an acquaintance wasn't the killer, but doubted the innocence of her boyfriend(?) There was an interesting back story about the history of the lighthouse. I like the characters but some of their storyline is unconvincing.
A few days ago I read
#1 of the Phryne Fisher mystery series set in 1920, Cocaine Blues is a delightful romp. Phryne provides a breath of fresh air and a sense of adventure wherever she goes. She fully understands and is sympathetic to the impoverished working class, because she used to be one of them; her wealth came by a fluke (just the right series of deaths led to her father's inheritance). She travels to Melbourne Australia to investigate as a favor to a family friend, but mostly to entertain herself, since her life as a rich London socialite has become dull. Phryne smirks at class distinctions of society by befriending and hiring lower-class but good-hearted people, and exposing the corrupt elite class. Phryne is a completely atypical 1920s woman who drives a sports car and befriends a woman doctor who is struggling with the gender barrier in the medical profession. Phryne solves the mystery she initially set out to solve, but along the way also cracks a drug ring and exposes George the Butcher, a ruthless amoral abortionist who rapes and kills. I look forward to reading the series, certain Phryne's future escapades will continue to expose more of 1920s society's issues.
Murder by Proxy is what I just finished this morning. It's a fast-paced cozy with a large cast of suspects. It kept me quessing until the end. I like the amateur sleuth Edna--a no-nonsense kind of grandma and the delightful, convoluted, complex plot.
I just finished
but I don't think I'll continue with it. The main character didn't appeal to me, and felt more romance than mystery oriented. My next cozy will either be
or
.

This is one of my all-time favourite series. I'm actually in the process of upgrading all of them to Hardcover so I don't wear out my paperbacks re-reading them. :)

I just LOVE the Joe Grey mysteries. I have all of them, and have reread them several times. The 16th in the series will be delivered November 22 - can't wait.

Today was just a really dismal day, so I finished up
. Another really good addition to a solid series, I think. One of the few plots that really had me guessing until the very very end.

I was not aware of this series...oh boy, another one to dig into! This does sound interesting. Thanks, I already have put one on hold at the library :-)

This Kerry Greenwood series has long been a favorite of mine. You have many fun adventures in store - Enjoy!
I've actually read a lot in the last few days. Finished
(I enjoy the Elizabeth Parker series),
(Donald's Jessica Fletcher books are always a good comfort read for me),
(I usually enjoy Laura Childs' books and this was no exception),
(how fun was that to see our very own Dru in the book!),
(yes, I'm a chocoholic and love Joanna Carl's books). Also finished (can't remember if I reported these before or not)
and
. Now finished with the hardcovers I got, I'll move on to the paperbacks.
Read Ah, Sweet Mystery as part of Patti Abbott's Friday's "Forgotten" Books feature last week. The plot takes a back seat to the development of setting and characters, filled with Southern charm and some humor. (Note that the story does contain a few elements that might be disturbing to some). The dialect in the dialogue is a big thick at times and the ending abrupt, but Sibley was a columnist and reporter in Georgia for decades, meaning her eye for detail is very good.
Melodie wrote: "Finished

and thought "Meh" too! No sense in me even going any further.

I didn't mind WHAT'S A GHOUL TO DO? all that much, but they just got sillier & more unbelievable to me after that.
