I agree, Heidi. I read either 2 or 3 of the Harper Connelly books and didn't really care for any of them. Harper is very easy NOT to like and I don't like her "brother" either.

Kelley (booknerd69) I only gave 3 stars to Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley, because I am not sure how much I really liked it. I had heard wonderful reviews for the book and eagerly picked it up, anticipating a good mystery with an intriguing lead character. But, I was disappointed at how easy it was to figure out the entire mystery itself. There are many layers to the mystery and murder(s), but each layer was pretty superficial and transparent. The other issue I have with the book is that Flavia, the 11 y/o lead character is not very likable. She is ruthlessly mean to her older sisters and it's not even clear if she loves her father. The only person she seems to have any attachment to is Dogger, a man who is a handyman at the family's estate. I'm not sure I will read the 2nd in this series, I just couldn't love or even like this book enough to give it another chance

Trine (trinespageongoodreads) | 200 comments I just finished reading Avenging Angels by Mary Stanton.

Great mystery read and the best in the series so far.

Included some new information on Beaufort & Company as well as the history of Savannah.

I read this earlier this month and while I liked it it felt to me like the book was written by someone else. The whole "voice" just wasn't the same to me and I've read them all. I also was extremely annoyed by the word "yep" or "yup", depending on what part of the country you're from, being spelled "yeap". It just drove me up the wall!

I read the first in this series when it came out and was disappointed with it. I thought the main character was just way too clueless. I have the 2nd & 3rd, they were passed on to me by a friend, and hope I like them better.

message 261: by Trine (new)

Trine (trinespageongoodreads) | 200 comments The new information on Beaufort & Company greatly improved the series - especially in the way of character development.

Hope you like the next two better, too, Melodie. :-)

Denise | 618 comments I just finished The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie, I gave it a 2 star and that was being generous. Should you be interested in my further thoughts on it please check out my review. Although I will probably eventually read book two I will not be standing in line at the bookstore the day it is released.

Melodie (melodieco) | 5280 comments I finished The Seventh Witch (An Ophelia and Abby Mystery, Book 7) by Shirley Damsgaard and it was a stellar read! I've read all the books in this series except one and have never cared for Ophelia. She truly comes into her own in this one and I gave it 5 stars.

Yeah, I'll probably get it from the library to see if anything happens due to this new character who just came in on the very last page. I definitely won't buy it.

message 271: by Kelley (new)

Kelley (booknerd69) Just finished reading Truly, Madly by Heather Webber. It was good, but a little easy to figure out. I will definitely read more, because I love the author and her other series that featured Nina Quinn. I like the characters in this one and it tugs at the heart strings more than once. It's a good read, even if the mystery itself was easy to decipher.

I really enjoyed it. I liked Harper and Tolliver and would love to know more of there very dsyfunctional family background. I thought it was very different and will finish the series.

message 276: by Kelley (new)

Kelley (booknerd69) I just finished The Diva Paints the Town by Krista Davis. I love this series and right now, it's probably my favorite series. For once the mystery was hard to figure out for me and I know it's a good book if I can't figure out who did in the first 100 pages. And this time it had me guessing until the end, though I was hoping it was one particular person, who did have a hand in the murder, but the other was totally a surprise. Pick this series up if you haven't already, it's worth your time!

Christy Brannen (murdermostbritish) | 100 comments Last night I read 'The Chocolate Cat Caper. The first inthe Chocaholic Series by Joanna Carl. It was kay..pretty good. Nothing spectacular. Pretty cutesy and fluffy. Caught the clue as soon as it emerged, so knew whodunnit before the ending. I have the next two books in the series alread. I'll probably buy the others as well if the next two are just as good. Loved the chocolate trivia and tidbits of information!

I agree. The recipes were definitely the best part of this one. I got the book with a gift card and turned it back around on eBay and got back almost all what it cost.

Denise | 618 comments I just finished Index to Murder by Jo Dereske. I thought I had already read it but as I got further into the book I knew that I hadn't. As I've mentioned in another thread this had been listed as the last book in the Miss Zukas Mystery series and I wrote Jo Dereske to see if that was true. It was almost true, it is the next to the last, she is working on the last one right now. I love the Miss Zukas mysteries and I think I have to move them to the #1 spot in bibliomysteries. I hate to see the series end. I feel that we got to see a more human side to Helma in Index to Murder and there were some things revealed at the end of the book about her (unrelated to the mystery) that were very interesting. I am going to miss this series very much and might just have to start back at Miss Zukas and the Library Murders and read the whole series over again.

Susie Fevella (susieinks) | 821 comments I just finished Sucker Punch by Sammi Carter. It was my least favorite in this series so far.

I started Homicide In Hardcover by Kate Carlisle, but just couldn't get past the first few chapters...so it's in the DNF pile.

message 286: by Melodie (new)

Melodie (melodieco) | 5280 comments I finished Where Angels Fear to Tread (Remy Chandler, #3) by Thomas E. Sniegoski , If Books Could Kill (A Bibliophile Mystery, #2) by Kate Carlisle and The Quilter's Apprentice (Elm Creek Quilts, #1) by Jennifer Chiaverini . The Chiaverini is something I wouldn't normally read, but I saw the series mentioned here awhile back and dug it out of The Pile since it had been there for sometime. It was a good read. Really liked the Sniegoski book, too, but still not as good as the first in the series. And I really liked the Bibliophile mystery. This one is set in Edinburgh, Scotland, a place I hope to get to in the next couple of years.

I've been hearing bad things about this newest book. I haven't read it yet, but I'll be upset if it's not good. I've been reading the books back to back for a few weeks now and have really grown to like the characters.

I love Jasper Fforde! The Nursery Crime Series is actually a spin-off of the Thursday Next Series, the first of which was The Eyre Affair. He does a pretty good job of writing each book so that it can be read stand-alone, but I would definitely recommed reading them all. The Eyre Affair sets up the whole alternate world where people live and breath literature. Not only is time travel taken for granted, but so is cloning extint species at home for fun, literary characters jumping out of books and living in the real world, and real people jumping into literary works and possibly changing the endings. Which is where the heroine comes in. Her name is Thursday Next (what a great character name) and she is a literary detective. She is tasked with keeping people who don't like the endings of books from jumping into them and changing them. Thus the Eyre Affair has to do with someone changing the ending of Jane Eyre. It was so skillfully written that I had to go back and read Jane Eyre afterwards because I couldn't remember how it really ended. lol It helps to be well grounded in the classics when you read this series, because it will make you re-think what you remember.

Unfortunately this isn't her best. I just finished it too, and there really wasn't much of a mystery to the murder. It seemed to be more of a set-up for the next book, where I'm assuming Norman's new partner is being set-up as the next victimand the whole job in Florida for Bill was left hanging for some future reason. The recipes were still excellent though.

Haven't gotten very far, but it's not that great. I liked the first in the series and thought the 2nd was mostly just okay. So far this one isn't as good as the 2nd one was.
