I felt the same way about the 2 of these. What a shame #1 was really good and #2 was really bad.

Karen I just completed The Moving Finger by Agatha Christi Hard not to like a Christi, though I would have liked more of Miss Marple's involvement. She was just in a tiny bit at the end.

alicia grant (shesha556) I finished Sinister Sprinkles (Donut Shop Mystery #3) by Jessica Beck and it was okay. Not as annoying as the other 2.

message 2455: by Susan (new)

Susan I finished Scones & Bones. Even though I like tea and Charleston, this may be the last one I read in this series. I gave it two stars because of its weak plot and seemingly rushed ending as well as for some of the truly awful writing in this book.

Agreed! I'm done with this series after this one, too!

I thought this one was much better than the other 2 also.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) I just finished off Three Bedrooms, Two Baths, One Very Dead Corpse by David James . Wow. The plot qualifies as a cozy but the language most certainly does not. I don't mind language in a book if it defines a character or is called for by events (subjective criteria, to be sure) but the language in this book not only seemed gratuitous but some of the choice words were beyond the pale. Vulgar for vulgarities sake.

Having said that, the story was good, and the author did a good job with character development and setting. But I don't know if I'll read another in the series or not.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Just finished Shoots to Kill (A Flower Shop Mystery, #7) by Kate Collins . SOOO much better than the last book. Huge improvement! Makes me get excited about the series again.

I thought Sinister Sprinkles was better than the first 2. But it's still not a great series. Still not a series I like enough to buy the books.

Melodie, I thought it started out really slow and I didn't really get interested until I was half way thru. Sometimes it just takes me awhile to get used to new characters, so I will give the next one a try.

Not too sure about this "monkey" book either. I think others liked it more than I'm enjoying it ;(

Finished Faux Finished by Peg Marberg. Can't say I really cared for this one. I had a hard time getting into the plot and keeping track of characters, even with the cheat sheet included in front of the book. The editing in this one left a lot to be desired too. The thing that made me cringe the most was reference to Christie's "Hercule Perot." Cringe. Shudder. It would be bad enough for any other genre to get Poirot's name wrong, but in a mystery?! Simply unexcusable! Will probably (eventually) read the second book in this series only because it is on my shelf. Both books were thrift store finds.

Ellen (elliearcher) Just finished X. Y. Z. A Detective Story by Anna Katharine Green by Anna Katharine Green. I loved it. Also-I can't remember if I posted I finished White Elephant Dead (Death on Demand, #11) by Carolyn Hart by Carolyn Hart. Loved that too-but now my tbr list is even longer! :P

message 2473: by Melodie (new)

Melodie (melodieco) | 5280 comments Finished Tapped Out (Jenny T. Partridge, #2) by Natalie M. Roberts by Natalie M. Roberts. It was a quick, fun read and filled the Utah hole in my Read the USA challenge!

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Just finished Death Takes the Cake (Della Cooks Mystery, #2) by Melinda Wells . While not as good as her daytime drama series (stupid publishers) I still find this to be an enjoyable series. I thought the ending was rather abrupt, but I didn't know who the murderer was until just before I was supposed to. I'll be ordering her next book.

Nora Roberts writes across several genres. The 1st and 4th in the Bride Quartet series are the best ones. I like her romantic suspense novels. I have a few mysteries she's written as JD Robb in my TBR pile. Dru's commments and yours will move them up. Based on other comments you've made here, you might find Roberts' Circle Trilogy, starting with Morrigan's Cross, or the Sign of Seven trilogy, starting with Blood Brothers, more to your liking.

Have you read Hess's other series? I like the Maggody series better than that series.

Karen,

The first few in the Claire Malloy series are really very good. The longer the series has gone on, the weaker it has become. I would go back and read some of the earlier ones to see if you like them a little better.

message 2480: by Shay (new)

Shay | 408 comments Also, in the Claire Malloy series, the daughter (Caron?) was a teenager in the later books, right? She was always really annoying, but became pretty unbearable at that point. One of those characters that can ruin a book/series.

You're right about Caron. The way she treats her mom and her BFF Inez is annoying. That character could have been developed into a lot more and wasn't.

Kimmie (thatkimmiegirl) | 100 comments Finished Fatally Flaky (A Goldy Bear Culinary Mystery, #15) by Diane Mott Davidson . I really love this series but this wasn't one of her best. I found the Bridezilla to be so annoying I had trouble finishing it. I think this meets the May mini-challenge "Blame Someone Else".

Karen M | 1436 comments Lizz wrote: "Karen, you were nicer than me. I gave Poisoned Pins only two stars... ;)"

I just kept feeling that since it was Book #8 she should have been a bit smarter about staying out of dark alleys and dark houses and dark parking lots??!! LOL

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Just finished X Dames A Lucy Ripkin Mystery by J.J. Henderson Interesting book. Doesn't exactly qualify as a cozy since there were some sex scenes that, while they weren't explicit, were a bit non-mainstream. Still, it was a good story, well written, although one that seems to be directly tied to previous books in the series. I read this one for the "X" in the A-Z title challenge, but I might read the earlier ones if I come across them.

Just finished The Winter Garden Mystery (Daisy Dalrymple, #2) by Carola Dunn , the second in Carola Dunn's series featuring bold and charming 1920s amateur sleuth, The Honorable Daisy Dalrymple and Scotland Yard detective Alec Fletcher. Delightful series so far.

Pamela (plvannest) | 1 comments I'm in the middle of Black as He's Painted and just finished Spinsters in Jeopardy. Ngaio Marsh is, next to Agatha Christie, my favorite cozy.

I think that perhaps the Mystery Group's May read The Coroner's Lunch could be called a Laotian cozy as it's rather quiet.

Ellen (elliearcher) I started The PMS Murder by Laura Levine last night & am almost finished. It's totally addictive. I could get a little annoyed at some of the verbal mannerisms of our heroine but I have a suspicion that I' addicted because she kind of talks the way I think.

I used to like this series, but stopped reading it after the one where she went on a cruise. It was just TOO over the top!

message 2496: by Rusty (new)

Rusty Just finished The Dancer and The Thief. Good story! Weaving politics, ballet and a spectacular robbery together, Skarmeta helps one understand Chile in the days it was recovering from political chaos. One begins to adore the young dancer/student, Victoria, and her romantic boyfriend, Angel, who loves her with all his heart. In addition, the sophisticated gentle thief who is adept at cracking safes, Vergara Gray, is so charming.

And, if you are in for a quick fun read pick up Paws for Alarm and join a family taking a trip to England for a few months. An adventure turns into a mystery when someone begins trying to kill the husband. Arnold finds himself at the wheel of a car with no brakes and a vehicle out of control. An accident? Then he is attacked by a group of rugby players on the train platform, one of whom comes at him with a knife. Lastly, while waiting in line for a bus someone gives him a shove in the back pushing him into the path of a bus. What is happening to this poor American who has come to England to pursue his research? The truth is a tangle that needs to be unraveled.

Caroline | 661 comments Just finished Slugfest (Dirty Business Mystery #4) by Rosemary Harris . Rosemary writes great books since I've always been interested in plants and such (studied horticulture for a while and one of my sisters is a Master Gardener) and I love the humor in the books.

message 2500: by Susan (new)

Susan I just finished reading A Test of Wills which introduces the detective Ian Rutledge. It's set in England just after the first World War. This is a good solid cozy with psychological suspense that kept me guessing until the end. I'll definitely read more in this series.
