Deborah (deborahkliegl) I love Caroyln Hart's characters. I can figure out who did it a lot of the time which normally makes me strop reading a series, but I love her characters so much that I just have to keep going with it.

Sherry | 137 comments Kaye wrote: "Just finished Death of a Chimney Sweep by M. C. Beaton and it's a good one! I like this series."

Sorry to disagree, Kaye, but I was really looking forward to reading this latest episode in the adventures of Hamish Macbeth. I read it yesterday, and it has been a long time since I was as disappointed in a book as I was in this one. It seemed to consist of one senseless killing after another (much more gorey than her other works) and in some instances the connection to the plot (such as it was, and what there was of it!) was very tenuous. If you have other books further down on your TBR list that you're looking forward to, you might want to skip over this one and read them first, because this one is a waste of time.

No need to be "sorry to disagree" that's what makes this forum interesting. If we all liked the same books, it would be pretty boring. One man's trash is another man's treasure so the saying goes. I do agree that this was more gory than some of her other books but I still like Hamish and I did like the plot line about Angela's writing.

I also like Hamish, and the plot line about Angela's writing could contribute to some interesting things in the future. Unfortunately, I thought that almost got lost among the other stuff.

Speaking of the Hamish series, I've run across it here on the forums a fair bit and good friend of mine has recently reviewed a handful of them on her blog. But, the early books do not seem to be very accessible - at least via the library (only WMA audio file via NetLibrary, no print copies and as I'm a mac user that leaves me out), my local used bookstore etc. Does anyone have a recommendation on the absolute latest book one should start with? I'm kind of anal and like to read series in order as best as I'm able.

Caroline | 661 comments Just finished two that I basically skipped through in a day because I just can't take any more - Devil's Food Cake Murder (Hannah Swensen, #14) by Joanne Fluke and Murder of a Bookstore Babe (Scumble River Mystery, #13) by Denise Swanson . I love a lot of cozy authors and, occasionally I'll continue to buy books in a series to support an author but I'm honestly done with these two. The never ending love triangles and a couple other things have just forced me to say "enough." They were fun for a while but can't take 'em anymore and there are lots of other good books to read. Sorry.

message 2268: by Sherry (new)

Sherry | 137 comments I hear you loud nd clear! I hate it when a series is really fun and entertaining, and suddenly just takes a real dive; or sometimes one will make a sharp turn out into left field, leaving you wondering "Where did that come from?" That is what happened, in my opinion, in the latest Hamish Macbeth book. There was also some of the repeated difficulty in his love life, with the same two women . I'll read the next book in the series, but unless it gets back on track, that will be the last one.

message 2269: by Deborah (new)

Deborah (deborahkliegl) Just finished the Shooting in the Shop by Simon Brett. Just as much fun as the earlier works.

Karen I just finished another Joan Hess-which are cozies my library has an abundance of-The Goodbye Body: A Claire Malloy MysteryI read three of hers in a row with Claire. I will probably read them all, but yesterday checked out a different author which I heard about and found that my small library has a lot of:P.D. James. The Murder Room( I tried to put book cover on here, but this is what I got instead. What am i doing wrong?)

Karen, when you "add book/author" there will be little buttons that appear at the bottom of that screen that ask if you want to add the "link" or the "cover". I think the link button is usually marked so you have to manually change it. Hope that makes sense ;)

Kimmie (thatkimmiegirl) | 100 comments Yesterday I finished My Heart May Be Broken, but My Hair Still Looks Great (Domestic Equalizers Book 2) by Dixie Cash . I didn't enjoy it as much as the first one because Edwina and Debbie Sue played a small role in the story. It mainly focused on a new character Paige and her love interest Spur. I found Paige to be annoying and the mystery didn't really come to light until the last quarter of the book. I was highly disappointed. I hope the next one is better.

Caroline | 661 comments Well, after a long break, I went back to the Alpine series by Mary Daheim. Just finished The Alpine Traitor (Emma Lord Mystery, Book 20) by Mary Daheim and The Alpine Uproar (Emma Lord Mystery, Book 21) by Mary Daheim . I guess a break was what I needed because I'm glad we've moved past the Tom and his kids thing and more back to typical zaniness in Alpine. Was also VERY happy to see developments in the Vida/Roger thing! : ) Both were enjoyable reads.

message 2279: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (fiberfool) | 38 comments I just finished the second Dixie Diva book, Drop Dead Divas by Virginia Brown Drop Dead Divas by Virginia Brown. While there was about 1/2 a chapter in there that had me laughing out loud so much I was thankful to be home alone, overall the book wasn't as good as the first one I thought. Though I don't often read two books from a series so close together. That may have influenced me. But I didn't find the second book overall to be as funny as the first.

The Kindle formatting for book was much improved, however. There still was no working table of contents, but there was no strange mark-up text or odd line breaks in it anywhere. Belle Bridge Books more recent releases may no longer be banned from my purchasing (I borrowed this title).

Warren Bull | 5 comments I just finished Death on Demand again. I had forgotten just how innovative Carolyn Hart was in her first mystery in the series. She starts with a list of items, sounds boring but the way she wrote it was riveting. How many mysteries start with a list?

Nell | 1223 comments I just finished Casting Spells Casting Spells (Sugar Maple, #1) by Barbara Bretton by Barbara Bretton. Not much mystery but a diverting read. Bretton usually writes contemporary romance and there is much more focus on the love interest and on the unusual town. The murder is barely mentioned and seems incidental.

She might do one more. I asked her, if it
was at all possible, to finish the"story"
with a good ending if she is done with this series.
She said she might be able to do that.
Right now I am reading two books.
"How to Survive a Killer Seance".
Plus, "Murder of A Bookstore Babe".

I read it a month or so ago. This has long been one of my favorite series, but this book and the one before it have just been a bit "off" for me. They don't "sound" the same to me, as though the voice is off. It's almost like they were written by someone else. I did really like the ending of this one as it was quite unexpected, so I'll be around for the next one.

Sassy | 39 comments Melodie,
Sorry to hear you didn't like it.
I loved it.
To me, it is her best book yet.
Another author I like is Donna Andrews.
I usually love her books.
Her "Swan For the Money" was just so fun.
But the last one,"Stork Raving Mad",
was not so great.
I hated the ending, and having so many
characters with nothing important to say,
turned me off to her book. Stork Raving Mad (Meg Langslow, #12) by Donna Andrews

I've read a few of Donna Andrews books and they were pretty good. A couple of my favorites are Susan Wittig Albert & Earlene Fowler. Susan' new China Bayles book, Mourning Gloria (China Bayles, #19) by Susan Wittig Albert , is on the way to me and I'm really looking forward to it. Earlene's new Benni Harper book is due out in May.
